It turns out 8 of them just had dead batteries, so I ordered some replacements and in an hour, 5/6 were booted. The displays somehow stayed intact, I was expecting someone to rip it clean off, and I have now instilled confidence in them to repair their own devices. It really is not rocket science. the only thing I did prior was removing the old battery adhesive and replacing it with a little bit of Tessa tape though, I didnt want them bending Lithium Ions...

Reminds me of when my wife's Google Pixel was "repaired", by an authorised repair partner. She had to send it back first because they didn't remove an internal film, blocking the front camera. After a short while it stopped working. Turns out they had fixed the battery adhesive tabs at the wrong place, they went over an internal ribbon cable, when eventually broke under the pressure, then with the battery moving around , the cable for that broke and the phone stopped working entirely. I also found they had snapped off an internal microphone ribbon cable, there's no way they didn't notice this as the microphone itself was not in the phone, just the end of the ribbon cable.

This is the main reason why I consider a new phone when my trust and worthy runs to it's end. Some time I had faith in official service centers, which ended up with similar states as Jeffrey's "this is how it looked when it came to me". Then I tried my local repair shops. Well, paid the money for the repair guy taking my phone to some party with him... when I came out of the shop I realized my phone was filled with a ton of drunkard photos and contact list. Plus the repair lasted for two weeks...
I literally don't hate my phone that much to give it in hands of poor quality shops. And you can never guess if that one is true or it just has friends/paid reviews...

I would love to see you repair more HMD/Nokia devices as they are solid mid range phones. I would rather send my phone to be repaired by someone like Hugh as he knows that it's the little details that make all the difference.

Those are damn solid devices. I have its smaller cousin the 6.1, which I replaced the battery last summer. They might not have fiery performance, but they are tools that you can rely upon. I'm not gentle with my phones, but it's three years of ownership, and the device still performs like first.
Edit: Going on the 5th year of ownership, on its 3rd battery, and still going strong.

Seen similar in the UK, a friend took her phone in for repair, they gave it back saying they couldn't fix it.
So she came to see me and I pointed her towards a decent place that's been around for 20 years.
Well, they couldn't fix it....................................................................because the 1st shop had stolen most of the inside of the phone.

Hey Hugh, I have a challenge for you. Take an iphone that's badly damaged, and try to make It fully functional by spending as little money as possible. Get an old, used display that could be cracked, reuse the battery, try to fix a Bent frame. I think it would be a fun challenge!

I still have bad memories of a repair shop near college NOT repairing the wireless functionality on my PSP 1000! I dropped the PSP and I got the stuck WLAN switch problem. The wireless functionality did still work, but after I got it "fixed", the switch could click into place again, but wireless functionality no longer worked and the charging port also didn't work anymore! I took it back, they got the charging port working again but wireless STILL wasn't restored! I took it back again and again, wireless STILL NOT FIXED! In the end, my parents got me a 3000 model PSP.

I used to work in a nokia service centre. Nokia 7 plus is by far the hardest phone to disassemble. The original, out of the box adhesive is very very very strong. Most new technician will accidentally damage the display by prying a little bit too deep and damaging the panel internally. And yeah, it is not a good device. I hate it to this day.

This coming from someone who has deal with this kind of butcher on a weekly basis, Nokia screens are not fun to remove, however can be done reliably with practice, and be careful when cleaning the tape on those screens, when removing the tape or glue it can pull the adheasive that holds the backlight to the lcd, not fun, and also get some Tesa tape from if ifixit, it is the best tape for cell phone repairs, I’ve used that tape you had there and in my experience it can be too thick for certain repairs, aswell as not hold as well as Tessa tape, fun fact, iPads are taped down with the stuff, also, thank you for sharing this kind of information to the public, I manage a repair centre and it’s always so fun to see someone else’s take with things like this

This experience hits so close to home for me. My charging port died last summer, and I asked a local shop for a quote for replacement. They quoted me for 30 bucks if repair was to succeed or no charge if the screen cracks during removal ( obviously ). Went ahead and took the phone in as if it works out at least I can resell it. Two days later I got it back, charges superbly.. but the screen is messed up with huge patches of dead pixels. It did not break but the heat needed and the prying they did surely killed it. They offered that they can replace the screen however the original parts cost half the resale value, I could confirm this myself. Chinese LCD seem to be more miss than hit for this model. So now I have a shoddy repaired phone that I cannot use or sell besides for repairs. I would love it to have it fixed but giving the same shop more money is just... If only my screen was mounted back this bad I could maybe fix it, but its glued on really well :)) as opposed to Hugh's example

2:46 actually, the USB C ports on these and other Nokia from the .1 lineup were faulty and you’d rip them apart, even if you used your phone normally. My Nokia 7.1 also had the issue, it was acknowledged by Nokia and covered under warranty.

I've repaired quite a few Nokia 7 Pluses. I find the display quite hard to get out in one piece, despite using heat (I have a heating pad) and being careful, using plastic cards and picks etc. It seems to be pretty fragile, and the original adhesive pretty strong. Maybe that's just me! The charging port does fail regularly on these, and aftermarket ports should be tested thoroughly before fitting - I bought a cheap one which didn't have all the components on it for cellular reception (antenna is in this array as well, as far as I could determine). Another great video, Hugh. Keep up the good work!
