Before watching Joey's videos I had a tendency to only enjoy plants from a mundane productivist and anthrocentric perspective, "what can I grow here that will provide me food, etc", "what flowers can I plant that will be aesthetically pleasing and easy to maintain in my garden". From Joey I have learned to value the plant kingdom from a completely different perspective that has really enriched my life and driven me to re-assess my interactions with the natural world. He's an incredible teacher that really encourages people to see the inherent wonder in the natural world, props to Joey and thanks for sharing this video CHS.
Hello think I must be lost I'm trying to find the Department of Unauthorised Forestry. A group that can send me geo/climate area-appropriate seeds in some helpful categories: stroad median mix, post-construction barren mix, parking lot and business plaza crucible mix and so on
Likely that's more his normal voice, pretty sure he plays up the Chicago Italian character for TH-cam. Which is fun, but you don't do that in a talk to scientists.
Joey Santore is a guy that goes deep to get the real rare shit, and he makes me laugh sometimes at his jokes because he is a real mench and educates us old grandpas he dislikes so vocally.
I've watched many of his videos. I'm stunned to learn that he is self-taught. Very rare person. Remarkable memory. I'm curious about what pollinates all these plants in this apparently almost lifeless desert terrain. Night-time insects maybe?
I'm also wondering if there are any known cases of small rodents or lizards being the primary or secondary pollen-transfer mechanism. Other than Bats...I assume they're considered to be rodents?
Just thinking out loud, rodents aren’t too reliable for pollination since they’re sensitive to stinging hairs, strong oils, and might still try to eat the flower for hydration instead!
The way Joey makes this information available to the public surpasses most if not all environment educational programs/organizations by far with free, interactive and well informed dialog and field survey. Revolutionary. 🙌
Love me some Joey! I'd attend any lecture he spoke at. He's brought attention to the importance of growing things, he's entertained & he's let us travel with him. Give his channel a watch!
Actually a good description as an amateur is someone who engages in an activity for the love of it as opposed to a professional who engages in it for income.

Amazing video!! I love the attention to detail and excitement that Joey is able to give to each plant he talks about. I have genuinely learned so much from this presentation and his channel.
My son lived in Chile for 15 years so we have been from Calama to Bulnas. When going out of San Pedro uphill I was admiring some plants my son told me to be careful because terser were still some mines laid during the Bolivia Chile conflict.
I can't help but wonder if those 'sound glitches' weren't some of Joey's famous blasphemous profanities that we have come to enjoy on his own channel, that were edited out for the more sensitive observers and admirers of botany.
The audio glitches are actually censored plantsex talk that is technically obscene in many countries, so for the sake of the global distribution of botanically important information, you will just have to think of dirty little titillating plantsex details for your own selves whenever the sound drops out in this clip.
What a great guy. Really looking at the plant world from a view most would never conceive. I sound crazy to my coworkers when talking about plant life but I don't even feel bad.
He’s the best. I now watch his videos over and over trying to remember all the plants. He has ignited my interest from simple gardening to botany. Would you, Joey, come to.....Florida...and spend a few days perusing ...plumerias?! Or fucking ....oleanders!?
He also has a podcast you can find in the community section of his TH-cam page where you can enjoy a gentler, more intimate Joey. I like his serious side, and he’s just talking not yelling as much. Nothing wrong with cranking up the volume and humor for his regular videos.
How much longer would it take for plants to evolve to be as smart as people.? I guess if that could happen it would have. Oh wait maybe they are as smart as us.
Its not just cacti that only produce thorns where herbivores can reach, many species of acacia do the same in africa and they have to deal with all the trickiest :)
It's a shame about the glitches. Joey aught to do more of this style of presentation for his own channel. While his TH-cam persona can be entertaining, it gets old after a while if you're watching for the informative content.
@@chancevicary1805 The accent and working class schtick is a contrivance for TH-cam (that I don't judge him for). Their stems don't have annual rings as trees do. Height and size relative to surrounding flora can help give a rough estimate but is still not conclusive.
His videos are the best field botany on TH-cam. He has created an amazing record that will be very valuable for conservation.
The magic is that he is a everyday common man. Who is smart enough to keep you entertained while teaching you something.
That makes him uncommon.
Nope, he is second fiddle to Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't. Dude is a walking encyclopedia with a foul mouth. Hilarious and informative.

Wind, pollen can travel for miles in the breeze.
Moths are common pollinators (I'm no expert of the area) but insect play a huge roll with plants and at night temps are cooler for moths and bats

I imagined Joey making dirty jokes during the sound glitches 😉
Ive watched his series on new caladonia multiple times, the most interesting and bizarre plants you could ever imagine, twelve species of auricaria!!
thank you
Joey you are so smart........
Joey being polite... what a mind-rip!
Joey is the schist, man.
What's next Santore, the Pacific Bulb Society? Don't let it change you 😉
True genius right here. Best field botanist, naturalist, wisdom master general.
Nolana santorii???
He would lose his shit if someone named a plant after him. Not in a good way, either.
Calling Joey an amateur is an insult. My botany teachers cannot hold a candle to him.
It just means he has no degree and doesn’t do it professionally. It says nothing about his level of knowledge.

There's only 391 people interested in horticulture in 5he state of California. Thats VERY interesting and quite ironic.
The thinner atmosphere cured his accent

Isn’t his name Tony?

He has the same accent/voice as Steve Vai.
I miss the robust Chitown accent and ribaldry however I get the occasion requires a modicum of decorum.:)
He has given lectures before where he has toned down the profanity. He still has his slightly rough demeanor.
Tony Santoro or Joey Santore? I'm so confused lol.
He uses both interchangeably, I think they're both pseudonyms
It's Joey. He probably chose Tony for youtube - Tony is more of a name of a Chicago Gangsta. Joey is more tame.

I feel the same, absolutely. However, being great isnt enough for youtube, you have to memorable. Without the persona he might have remained a secret
