I adore cultural exchange like this! It's so interesting to hear the opinions and impressions of those from the Japanese scene, especially since it's a side we on the western side don't usually see thanks to the language barrier. I'm also enjoying reading the other comments talking about their impressions of the American scene and NA players. Thank you all for translating!
It’s so interesting how much of an effect comfort, routine, and familiarity can have on people. I’ve been living in southern Japan for 2 years now, and I feel the exact opposite as the Japanese smashers. In my experience, the food here is great, but if you don’t live in a big city, there is a huge lack of variety. Being from America, especially in California, I’m used to being able to eat anything type of food, whenever I want. I’ve been craving so many things from America and can’t wait to go back when I visit and eat them. When I came to Japan, for the first 6 months, anytime I ate yakiniku, I would also get diarrhea, similar to Yoshidora’s experience. Our bodies just get used to what we are used to eating. Also, the comment about fried food, at least here in Miyazaki, it seems like a lot of food is fried. A lot of Goto menu items at restaurants are fried…. So yea.
It’s unique seeing interviews of Japanese people who came to America for tournaments, because most interviews that I’ve watched don’t include people from Japan because of the language barrier. Great video!
That was a pretty fun video, thank you! I'm surprised that EVERYONE agreed about the food being awful though; I think it's the first time I see 100% of people agree on something!
When Japanese players come to America for tournaments, they don't have cars so they only eat what's around the venue...hope they'll get to try better food !
The trick to eating in America is finding the right place and not trying to think about the price too much. The more commercialized it looks the worse the quality most likely. Hawaii has the best food in my humble opinion.
This is true, although convention/stadium food defies this axiom by both looking and tasting like trash ("commercialized" in a way that is more utilitarian than attractive-looking) and being criminally overpriced. Because outside food isn't permitted in these places, they can get away with robbery-level prices on food fit for prisoners. I imagine events in Japan have a somewhat similar situation, but not to the same degree as the USA.
Most likely they tried fast food garbage. An authentic BBQ or grill with American style food that’s not commercial or chain is going to be a much better experience.
i definitely agree with this statement, however i feel this is more applicable to locals or frequent visitors. Top major players from japan/overseas should generally research different options around the areas for major tournaments such as supernova, genesis, etc since they are technically frequent visitors if they plan to fly to these major tournaments year after year. However someone who went to supernova as either a low/mid tier competitive player or a more casual fan who enjoys these tournaments from a spectator perspective, they would not ever really have the experience from the area to know what spots are great. they could always try asking locals, but in america many big cities are filled with people who are generally uncooperative with strangers, especially if you are very visibly a foreigner. I dont mean to get political or sound too much like an NA hater, i'm not. I personally believe people are like this in america for a good reason, though I do think we need to practice awareness and vigilance instead of paranoia when it comes to interacting with foreigners/strangers. I am a foreigner myself, born in a latin american country, and face this issue every now and then, more often in major cities when i am visiting.
Tama-P saying "I'm already a bit on the heavier side" while he looks that healthy made me feel fatter than I ever have in my life lmao. Very interesting to hear from the Japanese players, I don't hear their opinions too much since I don't super follow their side of the scene, so it's a very nice change of pace!
About what Apollo Kage said about the game dying here in the states. He is so correct, look a Riptide going from at National to a Supermajor in the span of 5 days.
It's SOO TRUE, in Japan, everyone rotates after bo3 but everywhere else, it's hard to get your turn and people will literally turn their backs on you and will just keep playing until you force them out.
Super interesting to hear all of these perspectives. Especially that there's a unique sense of bonding specific to USA where local and regional communities show up and cheer on their members. Even though the USA is very competitive, sometimes to a toxic degree, there is a lot of love, as well. 💜
Loved watching all these interviews. Snow is.. unusual... probably the first person I know who doesn't like any kind of sauce on his food. If there were 2 more players I would've liked to see on these, it would be Leo and Miya.
To the point of giving players space after they lose- I saw people asking Raru for pictures right after he lost to SHADIC. It's embarrassing to watch that kind of thing.

wasn't aware this channel existed but it's a great thing to do for the scene, as someone on the US east coast i don't really get to see anything from japanese tournaments or players unless they're visiting, and i have to imagine it's similar for japan definitely understand having issues with american food between heavily processed stuff and how common dairy products are would love to see similar content in the future, especially diving into other parts of the scene like content creation, the scenes for other smash games, and the rise of non-smash platform fighters like rivals of aether and nickelodeon
