- “A DINGY DAY IN PURGADISE”
Original song, music and lyrics, by Sevi Regis c NY 11-2023
ABOUT THIS SONG:
The song is about an intellectual person who believes both in God and in social justice but who is caught in a time when rationality has been cast aside, faith has been tarnished, and in essence, everything has gone crazy to a greater or lesser degree. They feel lost in a strange place somewhere between life and death, “Purgadise”, a gray and uncertain place full of iniquities when the whole world has become like an asylum. So this person while dismayed over all the tragic injustices and circumstances of others, wonders how much longer they have to remain in this place as they dream of Heaven and wonder about both when and how they might arrive there as time draws to its foretold end. (The last line of verse 3 references expecting to die but being unexpectedly raptured instead.)
ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
The live portion was shot at the old creepy psychiatric asylum, Kings Park on Long Island. The images featured are suggestive of what went on there which includes many terrible things leaving behind a resonance that can still be felt when walking around that campus.(it is being gradually torn down and turned into a national park, but it needs a lot more “cleansing” than that). There is a lot of symbolic imagery like the gnarly old tree that seems to have absorbed all the twistedness that it observed by standing there all those years. And the green eyed person peeking through the hole represents that tree and the horrors it observed. The tall pointy black hat and black clothing is like funeral attire but also has multiple meanings but one is about the “spell” of mental illness that the people inside had endured, as well as the opportunistic darkness that occupied itself there. It is also a symbol of deep knowledge. (A side note is how lagging behind medical science is when it comes to understanding and curing mental illness, which in some cases can be as simple as wayward sugar metabolism in the brain).
LYRICS:
Intro: (Instrumental, no lyrics)
Verse 1:
Thought I might go up but the window was closed
Winds were blowing chilly, I was feeling exposed.
A dingy day in purgadise as the dragon got deposed
Paying off my crypt, while the lease on Earth foreclosed
PreChorus 1:
Leaning on Your arm
Keeping me from harm
Enamored by Your charm
As they pulled the last alarm
Called me up off the farm
Chorus 1:
Gibberish
Verse 2:
Thought to send a note on Edgar Allen’s crow
Perhaps the door was open but it didn’t quite show
Sat beside the road and read a verse of Thoreau
When quaintly interrupted by that passage from Rousseau
PreChorus 2:
Leaning on Your arm
Keeping me from harm
Enamored by Your charm
As they pulled the last alarm
Called me up off the farm
Chorus 2:
(Instrumental) no lyrics
Instrumental Bridge:
Verse 3:
Someone tapped my shoulder, seems off I had dozed
I looked up at the window but it was still closed
Had been hunting for a spot to quietly decompose
But the Composer of the score had me quickly transposed
PreChorus 3:
Leaning on Your arm
Keeping me from harm
Enamored by Your charm
As they pulled the last alarm
Called me up off the farm
Chorus 3:
Gibberish
Chorus 4 to Outro):
(Instrumental, no lyrics)
