    I was very good friends with The DAVOLOS family that owned both Admiral Hotels back in the early 80’s. I spent several summers working at the front desk of the Admiral East 88-91, great memories and the DAVOLOS family always treated me wonderfully. Absolutely loved that hotel lobby and what a privilege it was to work in it.

  • @donnafromnyc
    @donnafromnyc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The Ocean View, since splitting from the Admiral, has had a checkered record. You'll see reviews are pretty poor on the rooms, so it doesn't surprise me that it was sold. The sad thing is that I remember it being quite the place when it was the Admiral, more dark woods and dramatic lighting than the white and blue it is now. (I believe that the present Admiral was called the Admiral West, not the other way around.) It would be great even if a condotel if the main building could be preserved and restored as a restaurant/cafe. It really is unique, but because of its size needs an owner like Icona, but more preservation minded.

    Joey, I agree with you that the history of the Wildwoods, particularly WWC, is disappearing rapidly with the condo conversions. My family has been coming to the Crest since 1958 and the old Sands Motel, then the Beach Waves and the Bal Harbour. With a break in the 1980s up in LBI, which went the same way except for cottages being replaced by mega-mansions, we've loved coming back, now to the Bristol..and now the same thing is happening. I'm going to view your video again for the information and please post follow ups. BTW, what's happening with the Ocean Holiday? Your last report indicated it was at dead stop.

I understand that city's must move forward to stay alive BUT if they continue building all these high cost highrise condo buildings, I fear that not only will they will destroy the history in the area they will make it impossible for families to afford a vacation in a previously family friendly place. Add another odd thing...Wildwood Insider has the Admiral Motel cam that points to the Ocean View and on the diagonal to the park. On the Ocean Avenue facing side, you'll see the lights are on in the rooms directly above the parking area and the shades are sometimes open and sometimes closed. Very strange. Don't know if someone is living there or it's being used for something else.

    • @JoeyContino2

  • @paulchiolo859
    @paulchiolo859 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As a previous owner I could attest to the fact that the OceanView Motel is a terrible property, completely uninhabitable. This should have been demolished 20 years ago, the last time the Doo woo preservation league fought and saved it. It’s created another 20 years of dissatisfied customers who had horrible experiences. Stop trying to save these terrible properties and commenting on the infrastructure that’s beyond repair.

    • @paulchiolo859
      @paulchiolo859 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      PS….. it was already approved by wildwood crest as well as CAFRA for 69 new condos. The shame of it all is the market collapsed and the permits expired. Beautiful location but demolition is inevitable. Final word, if you want to save it (historical society, preservation league, etc) then pony up the money, buy it from the present owner and you can save it.

    • @WildwoodVideoArchive
      @WildwoodVideoArchive  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Paul! I hope you are staying safe and sound! We are creating a situation where everyone can win. The developers can shell the main building and build the new condo building in the parking lot in the back, the city will still get their rateables and the people will still get to keep some of it's history.
      I agree that the previous owners let this one side sadly but it's also the fault of the owners who didn't want to spend the time or money to fix it up. Some motel owners down here, not all, have this understanding that you close the building at the end of the year and you open it in the spring with no upkeep.
      Sure it would have taken many years to fix and yes it would dampen the profit margin for 4 years but then you would have a maintenance free building for many years to come.

    It's so sad what's become of the shore town that we know & love. Probably one more greed & pay-offs to get something condemned because some big money corp. wants the property. Nobody can afford to live or stay there anymore. It's a disgrace that those in power took care of the big money & not the people who built & love this place. I agree, we go to Cape May for one thing, the gorgeous Victorian homes. Wildwood was built on do wop & neon lighted motels. Nobody wants or needs anymore condo's. I hate condo's. Why not tear down AC. That needs a desperate redo. Leave Wildwood alone. Families have been pushed out. The very families that made this place. This makes me sick. If you want this kind of place, go to Las Vegas. They have too many. Leave Wildwood as it was.

      Cape May has a Preservation board that must approve things like this. Im not sure why we can't have one in Wildwood. We have history too that needs to be saved. And sure not all things can be saved which is why all I'm asking for is for the lobby (the most Mid-century thing on the building) to be saved. They can adaptive reuse that part in many ways

    I loved this place. I stayed there before and after it changed owners many times. After the Singapore went down those owners bought the ocean view. The father passed away. Marco was the son, he was considered the owner him and his sister ran it. His mom Pat wasn't looking to good last summer. She was suffering dementia pretty bad. Yeah the place needed help. I would stay there even now because the location was awesome. The owners just let you have a good time. Swim as long as you want. Drink at the pool. Smoke at the pool and although most people have issues with that it is the doowop way after all. People want to live there life on vacation without a pesky owner up your ass. Marco told me last summer he was getting out of this motel and moving more inland. They were just a really nice family. I will miss going there. I always had a good clean room. There were problems last year . I could hear people complaining there is no electric on the fourth floor. I was laughing because it was worth the price even without electric. Sadly the sundeck was condemned last summer. It was still great! From your drone shots I could see their office area is cleaned out. They were the last of the Mohicans! You just can't breathe anymore without someone telling you you can't do that here. I hope you save it . Just a side note. My husband would not stay there. He did when the previous owner owned it and he was ok about it. He's a snob ;) I had to go by myself but that's how much it was worth it to me to enjoy that freedom and view.
