Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 5 new videos every week! Tuesday through Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we transition from city dwellers to full time homesteaders!

This was the first video I've watched here and what a joy. We are actually cranberry farmers and I can honestly say I've never heard anyone who's not a cranberry farmer talk about cranberries as thoroughly and with as much love as you did here. I make my own juice, too and you're right the color and flavor is phenomenal. Thank you so much for supporting the cranberry industry.

Sarah, I appreciate you and Kevin and the girls more than words can say, but I wanted to try and say how in just a few ways. I grew up on a homestead for a few years and my mother and grandmother both grew up their whole lives on homesteads, so they taught me a lot. Both of them have passed, but you have, unknowingly, picked up the mantel. I am physically disabled, so haven't been doing a lot of the things I used to, but you have inspired me to do some things and to start a small garden again. You've made a difference in my life and I thank you

Sarah, I saw someone use a wooden TV tray, they turned it upside down and used hair ties to hold the four corners to the legs, set a large pot under the cloth and pour in the stuff to drain. I have been using this method since then and I set it on my table and let it drain all night. Works like a charm, I use it for jelly or grape juice.

Another thing to use for UTI or getting sick in general is eating fermented foods such as homemade sauerkraut (fresh not canned). The probiotics in them naturally boost your immune system and within minutes I can feel a difference. If you take a couple of spoonfuls every hour or every few hours you will notice a big difference. If you only have pickle juice you can do the same with that and it also works well. Hopefully this gives you another possibility to help you feel better.

My grandmother has cranberry bushes. She picked all hers and washed them. Then she tossed them in a blender and made a fine slurry and put them in pot. It saved her from standing there cooking that mixture a long time. Then she canned the juice. She'd use the paste to make cranberry bread without a ton of chunks so it was smooth.

Sarah, buy a 5 gallon paint strainer at the paint store. Turn it so the sewn seam is outside and cut off the tag. Wash it before use. Place the paint strainer in the pot with the stretch seam around top of the pot. Pour the juice into the strainer and pull strainer and pull out of pot. Drain juice from paint strainer by spinning strainer tight or place in collander.

One of my favorite jellies for gifting is jalapeño cranberry. Everyone thinks I am gourmet, but I'm really just frugal. Just follow your favorite cranberry jelly recipe measurements, first having simmered 10 jalapeños in the cranberry juice. Most recipes suggest removing seeds and inner membranes, but not enough heat for us that way so I remove stems and just slice in half lengthwise. Of course you strain before canning. Makes a lovely, deceptive pink jelly that packs a punch!

I do a similar process, not to make juice for drinking but for the first step for making cranberry and port jelly ( in England we use it for an accompaniment to roast poultry eg, chicken, turkey, duck even roast pork)
The pulp that’s left is then made into Christmas chutney which is fantastic with cheese or gammon ham (cold cut)

No the jelly is a clear deep purple set jelly. I include some freshly pulped and juiced Bramley Apple juice with the sugar in the final jelly process so there’s a lot of pectin - no gelatine is used and there’s a good set. The port is added near the end before putting it in the jars. Unlike the USA, the British jam making process does not include a bottling water bath in the process for jam or jelly making.
The chutney recipe I use is one from Mary Berry the British cooking doyenne.

EXCELLENT BUY! I do this as well. I also do mine in a juicer. If you like to have a cocktail now and then crush the berries, juice, save the pulp. I freeze a tsp. Pulp in ice cube trays with a couple drops lemon juice and fill rest with water...freeze. The drink is called Sea Breeze. 1 shot vodka over your frozen berry pulp cubes then add liquid cran juice. You can also do a Virgin Sea....no booze. At the grocery wher I work we gather up crans that don't sell and make an Orange Jello with Mandarin oranges for fruit salad desert. Sells like crazy.

Now I loved this video and idea! Super great idea and HUGE money savings!!! One thing I do to save even more money and time in instaces like this when taking things from the freezer to either cook for a meal or can like this is I take them out of the freezer usually the night before so they have time to naturally get to room temperature then start the cooking process. Doing that saves me time cooking them on the stove and money spent on gas. Also another way to easier ladle things into my jars I use a glass measuring cup with a handle so in one motion I can see that I have enough amount in the measuring cup and there is a pour spout on the cup. Well Sara I am going to make sure I check out the freezer section of the grocery store this weekend to do this! Such a great idea that I have never thought of nor did I even know how to do! Thanks!!!

Having grown up with the Washington State SW West Coast corner with growing cranberry bogs on the Long Beach peninsula, we continually were given permission by the cranberry producers to work with the "scraps" coming out of the harvesting, washing, selecting, and bagging of Ocean Spray cranberries. A lot of work (and bleach) to wash out the massive soil, stems, and leaves on the berries. Wash and float out the whole and intact rejected berries (small, super large, not so red), then further bleach and take the whole intact (no broken) berries. 10 gallons of sludge and berries from the cranberry bog wooden bins (2 - 5 gallon buckets) would provide up to 10 pounds of berries. Then freeze for later use, or use a juice steamer for cranberry juice. Using an apple sauce food mill, you can press and puree the remaining pulp as cranberry butter. All is totally organic and healthy.
Having also assisted in working new cranberry stems into the bog soils with a flat hoe, you started new patches in the bog bald spots by pushing the stems into the bog and they would self-root. A totally enjoyable process. Later in the post-harvest season (or early spring season) you would go out and using a cranberry bog mower, you would comb the cranberry plants (like your hair brush) and clip off the plants stems to a specified length (1 1/2 feet). The mown stems would then be gathered up - and sold off to the Ocean Spray corporation cranberry bog growers for more and newer installed cranberry bogs. Once having driven across Wisconsin I was shocked to see and understand that Wisconsin has MASSIVE !!! floating cranberry shorelines along their lakes - like a West Coast red tide! - bigger than what could see considered Canadian wild rice regions. Cranberries from Maine, Wisconsin, and Washington state coming to you. Cranberries are vastly interesting and a very healthy food.

There are lots of family owned cranberry bogs near me who sell their cranberries to Ocean Spray. Most people think they grow in huge commercial locations. It is great to know that some of these family cranberry bogs have been owned and run for well over 100 years. A few that I know, have been run by the ssme families for OVER 200 years. They live in New England style colonial houses next to the bogs. Just an interesting thing is that back in the early 1800s when ships travelled around the world ...to the exotic corners of the world...the spice islands, silks from india and the orient ..then there were whaling ships. All by sail like schooners and packets and clipper ships. They were 3 or 4 year voyages- from the time they left, until returning. The Cape Cod and New England sailors, who were built small, and thin and wirey....but they were more sought after as crew members than any of the much bigher, taller, stronger, strapping, powerful men that came from elsewhere. The Cape sailors were healthier, and more of them survived the illnesses that others succumbed to. You see, everyone around here on Cape Cod, had cranberries. Theyvused them in many ways...fresh, juiced. Cranberry jelly, sauces, etc. But, they also took the very last of them, and dried them, making their own sweet treats, that today we call "craisins." That's cranberries that are dried to be like raisins. Yankees never wasted. This was long before refrigeration, Freezing, and the like. So the kids jobs (everyone worked) was to harvest the last of the cranberries. The families would dry them and eat them like raisins. That was the sweet treats that the enjoyed all winter. Well, when the sailors left, they would be away for 3 or 4 years. So they brought huge sacks of dried cranberries with them when they boarded. It was their sweet treat, like candy, and a reminder of home during a long journey. Amazingly, they provided the only source of vitamin C onboard, and as the sailors enjoyed chewing on a few every night, they were like little vitamin bombs filled with vitamins, micronutrients and antioxidants. It's not that they wouldn't share, but they could be a little tart and some sailors had never eaten them. Plus. No one knew the incredible health and medicinal benefits that were packed on those tiny treats. Anyway, many other sailors perished from disease. The ship Captains chose these much smaller men from Cape Cod and Massachusetts because they were somehow immune and survived better than the larger stronger men from elsewhere. Today we know that it was the cranberries. One of the most widespread, prevalent among the diseases, was Scurvy, caused by a vitamin C deficiency. They weren't immune, they ate dried cranberries!

My family farm used to be contracted by Kellogg for their cereal. Almost all of the big corps use smaller farms for their products. Its much cheaper that way. We stopped supplying Kellogg due to contract reasons, but my folks are still farming away and someday I will inherit and continue on farming. Tyson is the only company that comes to mind at the moment for being a corporate grower and producer. And we have all heard how their birds are treated. When we had livestock they were big spoiled babies that were nearly family. We stopped growing livestock just because it was so hard to sell them off for butcher. I'd love to get a few milking goats and one or two cows that have long spoiled lives. Even after they stop producing.
