    Oh… I need that video on finding my style. I go onto Pinterest and find that I love every style that I encounter. Then I get overwhelmed and do nothing. Which may speak volumes of what is happening in my brain, but oh well. 😂

    Mixing styles is a style

  • @HR-re6mr

    I think finding your style is overrated. I think you will likely like multiple styles and use color or texture to bring it together. That feels more freeing to me. I like mid century but I don't want everything to be that. I also like bold colors for living spaces and quieter colors for personal intimate spaces. So there is a clear shift in my home from upstairs to downstairs. But my home is on the smaller side so I don't get overwhelmed. If I lived in a bigger space I would not want the color to be as bold as to be overwhelming. I think its like clothes. I can like something on you but know it would not work for me and that's ok. We can like a style or trend but it may not need to be what you use in your home for whatever reason. For me the most important aspect of home is that it feels like you. Without a ton of family photos, I want to walk in and be able to tell who lives here. If I can't get that response, I feel like no matter how designed it is, its not a home worthy of my attention...Thanks for the great tips, V!

      It really does. I find that a home with some kind of color palette almost automatically looks good. It's so simple, but something a lot of people don't even think about.

    Thank you Valentina. Knowing my colour palette has helped. For years designers said stick to 2 colours but I couldn't because I love black, cream, white, all browns, all greys etc so I'm sticking to anything dark, earthy and organic materials and my house is slowly taking shape.

      We've all done that! Watch V's videos about her primary bathroom and the 4 poster bed she bought.
      When they moved into this home, she totally in for a French country style for a major bath reno, and later realized she was into more modern design. She had to keep all the hard fixtures she spent a lot of money on, but she has been able to tweek it to suit her style better. I think it's a great combo.
      Check out the four poster bed episode, about realizing she made a mistake shortly after buying it.

    I’d love a video on finding your style.
    My lesson about not stopping until you got it right was when I did my black and blue room. The small windows glared like a flashlight in the night and it hurt the eyes. My solution was large mirrors to help distribute the light around the room. It’s absolutely amazing in there now! 🤩

    Defining how you want your home to function is the most important step to achieving success. It takes lots of thought, discussion and research but well worth the effort. A beautifully decorated space that does not align with your lifestyle will never be your happy place.

    • @debramason7237

      I love so many styles as well. For me, it came down to what I love coming home to. E g., I love dark, moody rooms, but I would be miserable and depressed living in them. I have depression, and I need light, bright, airy. I had all of the walls in my new home painted white, and I adore it. I use a neutral color palette because it feels peaceful and calm. I have lots of windows and installed custom woven blinds (like grassy/rattan look) so there's lots of light. It's classic. I am planning on doing my husband's office and our powder room a deep moody color, like charcoal to indulge that other love.
      So, I enjoy seeing other design styles/color palettes, I just can't have it in my living spaces.
      Also, ask yourself what you want your space to do for you? How do you want to feel? I decided I want a bright, comfortable space that's pretty, but practical. It's important for me to not have clutter-I'm not a minimalist, but I can't have artwork on every wall, furniture everywhere, etc... I want family to feel like nothing is too precious, so I can indulge in lighter fabrics by having them be easy care. (Sand colored velvet sofas that clean up so easily.)

  • @firestick4991
    @firestick4991 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    If you see something you like when you’re out, but it doesn’t fit your color palette, consider if you can change the color. Easiest change to do is painting it. Changing fabric color is trickier. Maybe you can ask if it comes in another color.

    Great video and I love Mary Ruth’s products. I’m purchasing a 1950s very small cape and I’m concerned about not doing too much (moldings, decor, etc) to overwhelm the space. I love some of these trends, but it won’t fit my very simple small space. I’m also working on a small budget, so I’m struggling to figure out what to focus on and how to make what I have to live with look better in the meantime.

    Living in Norway, it is all about the light, and I end up with the light colors on most items, also the color palette. Just looking around to refresh the walls, and I am looking for the right shade of white. It is so difficult. The one I have got today looks wonderful in my southfacing living room, but the east and north facing rooms get a little shade of green in the paint. Any suggestions? 😘 (the one I have today, 1453 cotton Jotun NCS S0502-Y)

    • @toosense
      @toosense 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      All shades of white have undertones and lighting, whether from the sun or lightbulbs, will change the way the color looks. The best thing to do is get large peel n stick paint samples or paint a poster board and stick it to the wall and see how lighting impacts the color. A few years back I painted my bathroom a white color but it looked blue at night, so I switched it to one with a yellow undertone and it looks perfect. I painted my hallway a white color but at night it looked pink, I switched out the lightbulbs to ones with a warmer tone and now it looks great. The color of the floors will also bring out the undertone as well that’s why it’s good to try large paint swatches before painting the walls and wasting all that money and effort. The color that worked well in my bedroom and bathroom was White Dove from Benjamin Moore.

    • @firestick4991
      @firestick4991 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The lighting may have something to do with it. Green plants reflecting in the sun can tint the walls green in the day time. A warm light bulb on blue based walls or a cool bulb on yellow based walls will end up looking green at night.

    I want to go all white. Do you think one color throughout works well or should there always be an accent color? I was thinking I could break it up with different textures so it won’t be just flat, boring, and white. I really can’t think of a secondary color because all I feel is white for the color scheme lol.

    I ordered five 10x14 rugs until I found one for my living room.
