Also, he was a Crusader, and Thoros and the local Armenians were Christians, and had the Turks next door... So, yes, Baldwin was an impressive politician, but he also had the circumstances to his favour and was super lucky. He inherited Jerusalem by sheer luck after all.

Human imagination would probably dismiss stories like: - a guy using a stock crash to throw his rivals under the bus and take over his nation’s government - a guy who was so rich he accidentally devalued gold in his nation and its trade partners - a guy who is stupid enough to kill the ambassadors of a huge military state and gets his empire razed to the ground as payback - an even stupider guy who rapes the wife of his surgeon and the wife of the general running the country for him (alternatively, a general crafty enough to take over the country and invent this story to justify it) - a naval battle where a squadron of 13 ships faces and then drives off a fleet of 133, thanks to superior doctrine, a genius of an admiral and use of tidal currents - an international plague so horrific that cities run out of coffins to bury the dead - a guy who takes over a city that belongs to another guy, destroys it, and recreates it in his own empire to troll the other guy, before both guys get bubonic plague and almost die. (and yes, all of these have shown up in Extra History)

Funny fact :when Stephen of Blois came back home, his wife Adela (William the Conqueror's daughter) was so enraged that he had abandoned the Crusade that she shamed him into going back to the Holy Land to finish what he had started ( and probably to let her go on running the county of Blois all alone) . He died in the Holy Land. I suppose she was the one wearing the chain mail in the family 😁😁
This is, without a doubt, the most chaotic and ridiculous stretch of history covered by this series so far. I'm constantly shaking my head and rolling my eyes watching this. I always knew the Crusades were a mess, but this....man.

Baldwin actually did contribute to the main crusade, sending arms and horses and siege weapons to the siege of antioch. The story I heard about baldwin is a little bit different, Baldwin was actually made co-ruler with thoros to be the Edessian rulers, and then there was a conspiracy and Thoros died and now baldwin was count of edessa.
Needs Details. So many interesting details are hinted but not present. Stop teasing me.... What was Boemonds Plan? Why would the lesser knights like him more then the rest? How did Bowdin get away with it? Why did the crusaders just let him go. The earthquakes, comets and stuff.. why were only the crusaders affected? Shouldn't Turks also have some beliefs. How are so many crusaders surviving for so long when there is nothing to pillage? What are the Turks doing in all this time between sending armies? Why would anyone from Antioch accept bribery when they know the crusaders will kill them all??? Argh this topic is way too huge for 1 show. Should have split it like Justinian and Teodora and go into the juicy details... There is so much drama in this story that I feel had to be cut out.
+Joue Mushin Lots of questions there... if you refer to the second time they defeated arab forces rescuing Aleppo as far as I know it wasn't really a trick as much as good tactics: he stopped the arab forces just with all the crusaders cavalry, in order to avoid the risk of moving the entire army and get assaulted by the Antioch garrison as they turn their back on them; overnight he moved the army near the bridge where arab forces were headed and forced them near the lake where they could not maneuvre and their number was useless, at this point the antioch troops stormed out of the gates seeing that the crusaders had moved but it was too late: the releiving forces were routed and Bohemond could attack the garrison with the entire army. But perhaps there was an actual scheme going on that I don't know about. Dunno why he was liked by the lesser knights, but he seems like a cool dude, perhaps it's that. LOL You should totally check out Baldwin story by yourself though because I would not do it justice, it is so much fun. And they let him go because why not? It's not like they needed him or they hadn't enough problems to worry about. You do know that mobilizing an army in medieval times was earlier said than done, do you? They were preparing the armies to send!

Also, they've said that the main idea behind the series is to make people more interested in history, not teaching history per se. Most of the stuff here can be found in places like wikipedia anyway. They simply make these stories more interesting with pictures so we can look them up later on, but still give a nice summary of all the events to those who don't research it later. The fact that you're asking questions like these shows that they're doing a great job :)

Don't get me wrong: I am ALL for destroying false myth about history and it is very important for us not to think about any historical event in a "evil vs. good" way. However it does seem that he goes the extra mile by romanticizing very often the crusaders as misrepresented and misunderstood a thing that is very coomon in revisionist history. And yes, there are more omissions and a more "generic" retelling of history in Extra History videos, but this is not meant to be an deep study of the crusades as much as it is simply an "educational" video. While I have higher expectations from a dedicated channel such as Real Crusades History. But, you know... historiography is far from being something without personal opinions.

The story I heard about baldwin is a little bit different, Baldwin was actually made co-ruler with thoros to be the Edessian rulers, and then there was a conspiracy and Thoros died and now baldwin was count of edessa.

Needs Details. So many interesting details are hinted but not present. Stop teasing me.... What was Boemonds Plan? Why would the lesser knights like him more then the rest? How did Bowdin get away with it? Why did the crusaders just let him go. The earthquakes, comets and stuff.. why were only the crusaders affected? Shouldn't Turks also have some beliefs. How are so many crusaders surviving for so long when there is nothing to pillage? What are the Turks doing in all this time between sending armies? Why would anyone from Antioch accept bribery when they know the crusaders will kill them all??? Argh this topic is way too huge for 1 show. Should have split it like Justinian and Teodora and go into the juicy details... There is so much drama in this story that I feel had to be cut out.

+Joue Mushin Lots of questions there... if you refer to the second time they defeated arab forces rescuing Aleppo as far as I know it wasn't really a trick as much as good tactics: he stopped the arab forces just with all the crusaders cavalry, in order to avoid the risk of moving the entire army and get assaulted by the Antioch garrison as they turn their back on them; overnight he moved the army near the bridge where arab forces were headed and forced them near the lake where they could not maneuvre and their number was useless, at this point the antioch troops stormed out of the gates seeing that the crusaders had moved but it was too late: the releiving forces were routed and Bohemond could attack the garrison with the entire army. But perhaps there was an actual scheme going on that I don't know about.
Dunno why he was liked by the lesser knights, but he seems like a cool dude, perhaps it's that. LOL
You should totally check out Baldwin story by yourself though because I would not do it justice, it is so much fun. And they let him go because why not? It's not like they needed him or they hadn't enough problems to worry about.
You do know that mobilizing an army in medieval times was earlier said than done, do you? They were preparing the armies to send!

Also, they've said that the main idea behind the series is to make people more interested in history, not teaching history per se. Most of the stuff here can be found in places like wikipedia anyway. They simply make these stories more interesting with pictures so we can look them up later on, but still give a nice summary of all the events to those who don't research it later.
The fact that you're asking questions like these shows that they're doing a great job :)

I gave a look to this Channel and you know... while being more interesting and insightful than lots of other historical channels it does feel like it is not immune from bias, in a more "revisionist" sens. Don't get me wrong: I am ALL for destroying false myth about history and it is very important for us not to think about any historical event in a "evil vs. good" way. However it does seem that he goes the extra mile by romanticizing very often the crusaders as misrepresented and misunderstood a thing that is very coomon in revisionist history. And yes, there are more omissions and a more "generic" retelling of history in Extra History videos, but this is not meant to be an deep study of the crusades as much as it is simply an "educational" video. While I have higher expectations from a dedicated channel such as Real Crusades History. But, you know... historiography is far from being something without personal opinions.

I really love your historical series Extra Credits, been following you guys since total war Rome 2, you do great work and please keep it up, however I would like to point out (for the purposes of further improving your crusade series) 2 mispronounced words, 1st word being "selchuk" not "selyuk" and 2nd is "killij" (using the I sound in the english word "kill") not "keeleej", anyway thanks and as always, keep the videos rolling in :D
