The Plants that Calm the Waves
Mangroves are shrubs or small trees that grow in coastal saline or brackish water. They filter pollutants from the water, offer protection against cyclones and storm surges, sequester carbon and protect us from the impacts of climate change. Thanks to the mangroves, the Ennore-Pulicat Wetlands are a source of livelihoods for thousands of fishers, mostly women. The mangrove-dependent fisheries of the sprawling Ennore Pulicat wetlands is under threat. The Government of Tamil Nadu wants to convert much of the wetlands into industrial estates, power plants and roads. The knock-down effects of such encroachments will destroy what remains of this magnificent mosaic of wetland habitats. What hurts the mangroves, will hurt the women dependent on it. What hurts the women will hurt our future.
Mangroves: The Climate Sanctuary is produced as part of the ‘Stop Adani, Save Pulicat’ Campaign to celebrate World Mangroves Day
