Although the whole part about the shepherds accidentally stumbling on the SEALs is most likely fictional(the shepherds acted as a sort of impromptu patrol) the idea of just some random factor turning the mission completely upside it’s head is so real.
@Aaron Ziegler Actually it’s a bit of both, many Taliban fighters weren’t dedicated insurgents but men with day jobs, many fighters would work the land for a season and then pick up a gun when the harvest comes in. So yes they were most likely jihadists, they were also most likely regular shepherds, at least by Afghan standards.

It’s kind of weird that now, the Afghan War is now firmly in the past. I guess all wars eventually end, even the ones that seem like they’ll never end…
I wonder how people that came back from WW1 felt when they learnt the war only lasted 4 years. Sitting in a trench all day, engaging in monotonous firefights and waking up due to artillery every 10 minutes must've made it feel like a lifetime
I love how when the song picks up in intensity the fighting also escalates especially with the "when I am far from home lyrics" hitting really good. Also the fighting audio is really good in this one there is so much going on gun shots helicopter sounds, screams glass breaking, a car alarm.

It's even worse when you know the truth and everything put forth in the movie and book was basically a lie. Luttrell never fired his rifle. It was, at best, ten Afghan militiamen engaging the SEAL team, not 70-200. The SEALs also poached this mission from the Marine Corps, didn't listen to the Marines who had been in the Valley dozens of times, brought an inadequate radio when the Marines told them they needed a bigger radio requiring one of the SEALs to expose himself to fire to get a call out. The initial Marine plan was to hike into the valley from a distance away in order to avoid detection. But the SEALs were too cool to do any hard work like hiking... so instead they just helicoptered right onto the target's front door. The target knew the SEALs were in the valley before the shepherd ever found them. The SEALs were dead from the moment they greenlit the plan. Quite honestly, the best thing to happen to Murphy was him dying on this mission. Because now he's remembered as a hero instead of someone who made a bunch of avoidable errors and ended up killing 18 US servicemen.
Horse Soldier but your at the charge of the light brigade. (Or any other famous cavalry charge, such as the 1st American one of the century in Afghanistan.)
