Following the ban on the "Compact" magazine by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the press wholesale trade has stopped supplying supermarkets and petrol stations. In response to a request from the German Press Agency, the Press Wholesale Trade Association said that the press wholesale trade would immediately request that the title "Compact" and its spin-offs "Compact Edition", "Compact Geschichte" and "Compact Magazin Spezial" be returned to all press retailers. "As long as the distribution ban applies, no new editions will be delivered."
Different customers in the retail sector were supplied. The association cited specialist retailers, petrol stations and supermarkets as examples. At the same time, it said that the station bookstore was a separate sales channel.
The ban was announced on Tuesday. The "Compact" magazine, which the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution has classified as right-wing extremist, is no longer allowed to be published. Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) banned the media company and Conspect Film GmbH. There were searches.
The TH-cam platform then blocked two channels that have to do with Compact-Magazin GmbH, as the US company announced in response to a dpa inquiry. If you searched for Compact-TV content on the video platform, you were told that the channel, which has hundreds of thousands of subscribers, was not available.
The "Compact" website was also no longer accessible. In addition, the online trading platform eBay said in response to a dpa query that it had removed all relevant articles from the platform. "The magazine is now illegal and can therefore of course no longer be offered on eBay."
Faeser justifies the ban by saying that "Compact" is a "central mouthpiece of the right-wing extremist scene". She says: "This magazine incites hatred in an unspeakable way against Jews, against people with a migration background and against our parliamentary democracy." The ban shows "that we are also taking action against the intellectual arsonists who are stirring up a climate of hatred and violence against refugees and migrants and who want to overthrow our democratic state."
"Compact" editor-in-chief Jürgen Elsässer, on the other hand, spoke of an outrageous interference with press freedom and told reporters: "What we have today in the Federal Republic of Germany is an undemocratic regime, like the SED regime was."
