The first segment and the last are by far the craziest and most intense. But I think I was actually most frightened by the Skype segment. There was a part in that segment where I almost had a heart attack.

I saw the beginning of your review and that was enough for me to pause this and go watch it right away. V/H/S is a damn good movie.. it's an anthology which actually makes it more interesting than the usual "found tape"movies. Man I was so creeped out and the fact that nothing was really explained made it even more scary. I loved it.
The nightmare remake opening scene where the guy stabs himself in the throat and you can hear the crunching of his Adams Apple and the blade dragging across his spine is my favorite throat cutting in any movie. But this one is very good

It was just unnerving. *SPOILERS* The part where you realize neither of the couple are filming in their hotel room was creepy, but the the conclusion to the story was just... idek. I've heard many people, like Chris, say it was the weakest of the 5, while others say it is the strongest. I think having a girlfriend or wife will make this tape hit harder. I mean no offense at all when I say this. The second tape is easily the most believable story in the movie, and to see the wife do that to her husband. Idk it was just unnerving thinking what if my girlfriend did that to me..
@J Z Fair, but personally human horror doesn't really get to me as much. I'm usually thinking 'yes I know humans can do terrible things, life sucks, I could be murdered or worse at any time...And?' Idk maybe it's depression and cynicism, but humans being terrible doesn't usually scare me as much because of the realism of it I guess.
This segment is really weaker than the other 4 films. Even the segment with Skype holds the tension more. Moreover, Second Honeymoon is one of the worst tapes in the entire universe of this film.
The creepy-chick at the party bit just freaked me out, and I am a tough person to scare....I put horror movies on to listen to while I fall asleep at night quite frequently....and I must say I have been largely disappointed in horror, and yes, movies in general, for at least a decade.....but that creepy missis and the generally creepy situation she was in as well.....she will never leave me......she is burned into my memory.......love it!!!!! I like you......phew......awesome.....

I just finished the first segment, and jesus that was terrifying.. I cringed, and covered my mouth in awe.. My only gripe with that first segment is the fact that everyone who has mad a video about this movie basically added the picture of unnatural split in the first female monsters forehead, and her very sharp fangs. I would've had a better experience without those tiny spoilers.
My brother watched it with subtitles and he told me that during the credits, the subtitles said "Satan is here". He thought it was a bug, but when looking for that sentence in the movie, he did not find it.
It is pretty good, some of it didn't make sense though, like the skype conversation, like why would anyone put a skype conversation on to a VHS as opposed to just putting it on a cd or dvd?
Thank YOU for being one of the few people who correctly identify this creature as a harpy and not a succubus. At least as far as legitimate folklore goes, this creature is spot-on for a harpy. People want to say succubus just because of the sex, but have no idea that a succubus is a totally different type of creature in folklore. Applause to you!

This movie is really underrated. Its a really good horror movie that many people haven't seen or heard of. It actually scared me. It took a week for the fear to wear off.
The first one was definitely the creepiest, the fact that it’s shot in POV makes it even scarier. When the POV character meets Lily for the first time, it seems like we are personally meeting her for the first time. That actress scared the hell out of me- it’s her eyes. Overall, the movie has a very ominous and real feel to it- it has a vibe to it that makes you feel gross and as if you shouldn’t be watching it, almost like how the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre made you feel.
I love V/H/S actually, the 2nd one is pretty good too, but that 1st is damn near perfect in my eyes.. The 3rd movie was... Well, there's a reason why they stopped at 3 movies... I didn't like the jumpscare music moment either though, I honestly see jump scare noises as a fucking laugh track; it's just forced emotional gags that program people to feel what the studio/director/whoever wants you to feel or act during a scene... It's just stupid... However, V/H/S is one of my favorite horror films and I'm glad I found this short review for it..! Nobody should judge you for reacting athenticly and props for being honest about them..! Never be ashamed of that, there's no reason to feel like a little girl when something truly scary or disturbing gets a reaction out of you.. I'd say that you're too use to Hollywood's bullshit that this film broke most of those expectations for horror movies actually being scary..

I'm sorry if there's grammar mistakes but I'm not grammar checking it This may sound a bit weird but the V/H/S movies are probably one of my favorite series because the story's in them are very similar to dreams I have at night random, scary, fucked up, and they don't make sense which I kind of love. I don't offend dream but when I do they always have a similar style to the movies my dreams also usually take 3-5 days like they'll start one day and a story plays and and then I wake up and the next night the story continues. I've been dreaming like this sense I was about 7 the first one I remember was about aliens taking over earth and killing everyone it was lit. The most recent one was about 3 months ago (I only remember my dreams maybe 4-5 times a year) it was about me and a few of my friends in an huge old abandoned church some were in England. There was this witch ghost thing.. that basicly killed everyone one by one. This dream was only 3 days long on the 3rd day I saw her grab my best fucking friend by the neck with her dark winkly face she stick her tonge out (it looked like it just keeped growing almost) and scooped my friends eyes then grabbed him to the ground and ripped him to pieces she then just looked up at me and smiled me she had bright red growing eyes then I woke up that one was definitely the scariest one I've had there usually not very scary and more one the weird side if you have any questions please feel free to ask.
Just a little fun fact about V/H/S (2012), there's actually an alternate ending for 10/31/98 (the final short film from V/H/S (2012)) where the 4 main characters all manage to successfully escape the car before the train smashes into their car and then they all just walk away and talk about how much fun they had and what a crazy night it was, while the train hits the car and it explodes right behind them. And the most crazy part? It was actually shot in ONE take by the directors of that short film. Crazy, huh?
Found VHS on Netflix... was blown away. Was absolutely amazing. The Hitchcock like change of pace from story to story (Hitchcock presents, where different up and coming directors would each do a piece) was awesome for one, as each story was unique to the other.
this movie is the movie I need to see a priest for. I recently watched it this past weekend and I haven't stopped having nightmares like I'm in one of the tapes. This is not a regular scary movie.
Your review was objective and accurate. I'm subscribing right now. And you are right, at some points the movie makers built a lot of tension that (because of my years and years watching horror movie) kept me looking all over the screen to avoid getting surprised, trying to ease the scares to come. It was 3am when I watched V/H/S, I didn't gasp, but I kept looking at the hallway from time to time and I had to move a shirt that was projecting creepy shadows on the wall. I looked for an experience like that to keep me watching the shorts and they delivered.

It's really not that scary. Some of the stories are creepy and it's definitely worth watching, but I don't understand why everyone is acting like this is so terrifying. It's no scarier than any other above-average horror film.

I think I read once some people can't do shaky cam due to the disconnect between all the jerking around and the fact that they're sitting. To anyone who hasn't seen this movie, don't watch the whole thing. You can, but if you want to be scared, just watch the first segment. The fact that he had a camera on his glasses was far more immersive than any other found footage movie. Also, that scene is terrifying. I don't get scared very easily, in fact this whole movie was kind of laughable, but that first scene messed with me.
the first segment was the best, and to be honest, it is the only segment actually worth watching from the series. The rest isn't impressive, but the first one.... chills.
To your point about things not being explained: I think it makes it more scary to leave things unexplained, because it seems to be much more realistic. That's how life really is - awful stuff does happen, and we rarely get real answers about *why*.

That last tape in the movie was hands down the best! I almost wish they could make a feature length movie out of the premise it had. I wasn't so much scared by it as I was entertained by it, and great special effects too.
Personally I like the stories in the second movie much better. I think the ideas in the second movie are fleshed out better, but that is just me. In terms of this movie however: 1) Excellent. It is unbelievably scary and unnerving. I probably would have found it even scarier if I were a dude. 2) Still very creepy, but I was underwhelmed with how it ended 3) By far the weakest one. To me it just was not scary. It had a very interesting concept, but it just was not fleshed out well. 4) This...this was just fucked up. 5) Just gonna say that cults creep the shit out of me, and this was no exception. The fact that everything just escalates to get worse and worse does not help
I don't truly scare easily, that enjoyment of horror films went away a long time ago. With that being said that chick in the first video sent chills up my spine from the second I saw her!!! She scared the shit out of me!!
Chris! I am glad that you enjoyed V/H/S, even though I am super late to the party! I was also pretty impressed by the film despite its low ratings and binged all three of them on Netflix one day! Now that we are in 2017, IT definitely takes the cake so far as my favorite film of the year!

Cabin in the woods, did a lot for the genre, for sure. The movie didn't carry much weight, in my opionion. The great thing about this movie, and redeeming quality, is that it opened up horror for a lot of new fans.
Are you kidding? Cabin in the Woods was amazing. It wasn't that scary, but it was hilarious and really creative. If you went into it expecting a horror movie, I can see how you'd be disappointed... because Cabin in the Woods wasn't a true horror movie. It was a comedy that mocked horror movies in a really clever way.
Saw this a few days ago and my reactions are mixed. The wrap around segment fell flat for me. The characters were unlikeable and all the scares were too cliche for me. The first segment was damn near insufferable until the shit hit the fan, then it got pretty decent. Before that, though, the characters were way too bro-dude, but at least you get to see most of them die horribly. Second segment was just kind of boring. There were a few decent moments of suspense but the pay off was weak. Third segment is once again way too cliche ridden and, except for the monster, was a subpar college-kids-go-camping slasher pic. However, I really do like the concept of the static monster and think it could be used to better effect. Fourth segment was okay, a real mixed bag of good and bad ideas. Basing the whole thing on Skype conversations was an interesting idea but ultimately proved to be too limiting. Also, I find the notion of transferring Skype conversations to VHS to be a little too silly. However, I will say that the self-surgery section had my skin crawling. The last segment was definitely the best. I thought the build up was well paced and suspenseful, and then once all hell broke loose there were some clever ideas and good effects work on display.
Zam W Yep. By no means would I call it high art, but of all the segments it was the only one that I think didn't have any glaring flaws. Had the first half of the segment with the demon lady been better, that probably would have been best, but I really couldn't stand the characters.
i didn't get scared but i really enjoyed the movie. it takes a lot to scare me now so if a horror movie can grip me and entertain me then it gets my approval. i also loved that there were really no answers given which allows my mind to roam. a few days later i still had some of the short stories on my mind.

You know it's weird with horror movies. Why do people expect an explanation in the form of a narrative to a horror film. What makes makes a horror film scary is the fact that we can neither explain nor comprehend what's happening. That's how our brain works- if it can explain stuff, then that thing stops being scary. Remember the 'I feel fantastic' video with the female mannequin? That scared the living crap out of people, bcs no one knew the origins of this video, nor the reason why it was made. So I think a narrative in a horror film is detrimental to the genre. A true horror film is suspense + the unknown, not jump scares + a thoroughly explained story.
Tbh that video didn't scare me. There is nothing unnerved me though, I'll admit. I didn't find anything scary about a pleasant sounding synth voice singing mannequin. But honestly at the same time I'd have to say it's fair to be scared of it. I'm not the arbitor of scary and not, I'm not going to judge people. I just don't personally get it.
To be honest I didn't think the movie scared me. I thought the Succubus bit at the start was pretty creative because that's a demon that isn't often explored in film. But the movie didn't really scare me because I felt it still had specific tropes that were easy to identify. Honestly, the scariest thing in that movie was the sorry-looking boobs of the girl in the alien fetus bit.

Idk maybe it's depression and cynicism, but humans being terrible doesn't usually scare me as much because of the realism of it I guess.
This segment is really weaker than the other 4 films. Even the segment with Skype holds the tension more. Moreover, Second Honeymoon is one of the worst tapes in the entire universe of this film.
it was my favorite until the lover reveal. if it ended with the killing of one of the people in the hotel room I'd have def said it was #1 (for me)

That first short film is brutal. The stairwell scene scared the living shit out of me.
The creepy-chick at the party bit just freaked me out, and I am a tough person to scare....I put horror movies on to listen to while I fall asleep at night quite frequently....and I must say I have been largely disappointed in horror, and yes, movies in general, for at least a decade.....but that creepy missis and the generally creepy situation she was in as well.....she will never leave me......she is burned into my memory.......love it!!!!! I like you......phew......awesome.....

I just finished the first segment, and jesus that was terrifying.. I cringed, and covered my mouth in awe..
My only gripe with that first segment is the fact that everyone who has mad a video about this movie basically added the picture of unnatural split in the first female monsters forehead, and her very sharp fangs. I would've had a better experience without those tiny spoilers.
My brother watched it with subtitles and he told me that during the credits, the subtitles said "Satan is here". He thought it was a bug, but when looking for that sentence in the movie, he did not find it.

It is pretty good, some of it didn't make sense though, like the skype conversation, like why would anyone put a skype conversation on to a VHS as opposed to just putting it on a cd or dvd?

Thank YOU for being one of the few people who correctly identify this creature as a harpy and not a succubus. At least as far as legitimate folklore goes, this creature is spot-on for a harpy. People want to say succubus just because of the sex, but have no idea that a succubus is a totally different type of creature in folklore. Applause to you!

This movie is really underrated. Its a really good horror movie that many people haven't seen or heard of. It actually scared me. It took a week for the fear to wear off.

The first one was definitely the creepiest, the fact that it’s shot in POV makes it even scarier. When the POV character meets Lily for the first time, it seems like we are personally meeting her for the first time. That actress scared the hell out of me- it’s her eyes.
Overall, the movie has a very ominous and real feel to it- it has a vibe to it that makes you feel gross and as if you shouldn’t be watching it, almost like how the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre made you feel.
I love V/H/S actually, the 2nd one is pretty good too, but that 1st is damn near perfect in my eyes.. The 3rd movie was... Well, there's a reason why they stopped at 3 movies...
I didn't like the jumpscare music moment either though, I honestly see jump scare noises as a fucking laugh track; it's just forced emotional gags that program people to feel what the studio/director/whoever wants you to feel or act during a scene... It's just stupid...
However, V/H/S is one of my favorite horror films and I'm glad I found this short review for it..! Nobody should judge you for reacting athenticly and props for being honest about them..! Never be ashamed of that, there's no reason to feel like a little girl when something truly scary or disturbing gets a reaction out of you.. I'd say that you're too use to Hollywood's bullshit that this film broke most of those expectations for horror movies actually being scary..

This may sound a bit weird but the V/H/S movies are probably one of my favorite series because the story's in them are very similar to dreams I have at night random, scary, fucked up, and they don't make sense which I kind of love. I don't offend dream but when I do they always have a similar style to the movies my dreams also usually take 3-5 days like they'll start one day and a story plays and and then I wake up and the next night the story continues. I've been dreaming like this sense I was about 7 the first one I remember was about aliens taking over earth and killing everyone it was lit. The most recent one was about 3 months ago (I only remember my dreams maybe 4-5 times a year) it was about me and a few of my friends in an huge old abandoned church some were in England. There was this witch ghost thing.. that basicly killed everyone one by one. This dream was only 3 days long on the 3rd day I saw her grab my best fucking friend by the neck with her dark winkly face she stick her tonge out (it looked like it just keeped growing almost) and scooped my friends eyes then grabbed him to the ground and ripped him to pieces she then just looked up at me and smiled me she had bright red growing eyes then I woke up that one was definitely the scariest one I've had there usually not very scary and more one the weird side

Just a little fun fact about V/H/S (2012), there's actually an alternate ending for 10/31/98 (the final short film from V/H/S (2012)) where the 4 main characters all manage to successfully escape the car before the train smashes into their car and then they all just walk away and talk about how much fun they had and what a crazy night it was, while the train hits the car and it explodes right behind them.
And the most crazy part? It was actually shot in ONE take by the directors of that short film. Crazy, huh?
Found VHS on Netflix... was blown away. Was absolutely amazing.
The Hitchcock like change of pace from story to story (Hitchcock presents, where different up and coming directors would each do a piece) was awesome for one, as each story was unique to the other.

And you are right, at some points the movie makers built a lot of tension that (because of my years and years watching horror movie) kept me looking all over the screen to avoid getting surprised, trying to ease the scares to come.
It was 3am when I watched V/H/S, I didn't gasp, but I kept looking at the hallway from time to time and I had to move a shirt that was projecting creepy shadows on the wall. I looked for an experience like that to keep me watching the shorts and they delivered.

It's really not that scary. Some of the stories are creepy and it's definitely worth watching, but I don't understand why everyone is acting like this is so terrifying. It's no scarier than any other above-average horror film.

I bought this movie at the dollar tree. Because of this review, I'm afraid to watch it.
To anyone who hasn't seen this movie, don't watch the whole thing. You can, but if you want to be scared, just watch the first segment. The fact that he had a camera on his glasses was far more immersive than any other found footage movie. Also, that scene is terrifying. I don't get scared very easily, in fact this whole movie was kind of laughable, but that first scene messed with me.
LOVE THIS!! LOVE that the segment that resonated with me did so with others. Only the last part of the film had the same effect

The first half of "Amateur Night" is easily some of the creepiest stuff in the entire film.
The first story in this had me sleepless for one night.
for me it was multiple. Not to mention the girl showed up in my dreams and still does.
That last tape in the movie was hands down the best! I almost wish they could make a feature length movie out of the premise it had. I wasn't so much scared by it as I was entertained by it, and great special effects too.

Personally I like the stories in the second movie much better.
I think the ideas in the second movie are fleshed out better, but that is just me.
In terms of this movie however:
1) Excellent. It is unbelievably scary and unnerving. I probably would have found it even scarier if I were a dude.
2) Still very creepy, but I was underwhelmed with how it ended
3) By far the weakest one. To me it just was not scary. It had a very interesting concept, but it just was not fleshed out well.
4) This...this was just fucked up.
5) Just gonna say that cults creep the shit out of me, and this was no exception. The fact that everything just escalates to get worse and worse does not help

I don't truly scare easily, that enjoyment of horror films went away a long time ago. With that being said that chick in the first video sent chills up my spine from the second I saw her!!! She scared the shit out of me!!
Chris! I am glad that you enjoyed V/H/S, even though I am super late to the party! I was also pretty impressed by the film despite its low ratings and binged all three of them on Netflix one day! Now that we are in 2017, IT definitely takes the cake so far as my favorite film of the year!
Tbh I didn't like the film. I loved the first story, but the others felt like a waste of time. I watched this in a dark room and at no point was I scared.

Cabin in the woods, did a lot for the genre, for sure. The movie didn't carry much weight, in my opionion. The great thing about this movie, and redeeming quality, is that it opened up horror for a lot of new fans.

Are you kidding? Cabin in the Woods was amazing. It wasn't that scary, but it was hilarious and really creative. If you went into it expecting a horror movie, I can see how you'd be disappointed... because Cabin in the Woods wasn't a true horror movie. It was a comedy that mocked horror movies in a really clever way.
Next Gen Replay Cabin in the woods is a very clever satire disguised as horror.

Saw this a few days ago and my reactions are mixed.
The wrap around segment fell flat for me. The characters were unlikeable and all the scares were too cliche for me.
The first segment was damn near insufferable until the shit hit the fan, then it got pretty decent. Before that, though, the characters were way too bro-dude, but at least you get to see most of them die horribly.
Second segment was just kind of boring. There were a few decent moments of suspense but the pay off was weak.
Third segment is once again way too cliche ridden and, except for the monster, was a subpar college-kids-go-camping slasher pic. However, I really do like the concept of the static monster and think it could be used to better effect.
Fourth segment was okay, a real mixed bag of good and bad ideas. Basing the whole thing on Skype conversations was an interesting idea but ultimately proved to be too limiting. Also, I find the notion of transferring Skype conversations to VHS to be a little too silly. However, I will say that the self-surgery section had my skin crawling.
The last segment was definitely the best. I thought the build up was well paced and suspenseful, and then once all hell broke loose there were some clever ideas and good effects work on display.

Yep. By no means would I call it high art, but of all the segments it was the only one that I think didn't have any glaring flaws. Had the first half of the segment with the demon lady been better, that probably would have been best, but I really couldn't stand the characters.
VHS is one of the disturbing films I have seen
i didn't get scared but i really enjoyed the movie. it takes a lot to scare me now so if a horror movie can grip me and entertain me then it gets my approval. i also loved that there were really no answers given which allows my mind to roam. a few days later i still had some of the short stories on my mind.
Just re-watched this with my Dad, he loved it. I enjoyed both of them, and re-watching it, I found it to still be good.

You know it's weird with horror movies. Why do people expect an explanation in the form of a narrative to a horror film. What makes makes a horror film scary is the fact that we can neither explain nor comprehend what's happening. That's how our brain works- if it can explain stuff, then that thing stops being scary. Remember the 'I feel fantastic' video with the female mannequin? That scared the living crap out of people, bcs no one knew the origins of this video, nor the reason why it was made. So I think a narrative in a horror film is detrimental to the genre. A true horror film is suspense + the unknown, not jump scares + a thoroughly explained story.
Tbh that video didn't scare me.

I didn't find anything scary about a pleasant sounding synth voice singing mannequin. But honestly at the same time I'd have to say it's fair to be scared of it. I'm not the arbitor of scary and not, I'm not going to judge people. I just don't personally get it.
The first one had it's own movie, SIREN (2016) made so if you liked her saying "I like you" it might be worth checking out.

To be honest I didn't think the movie scared me. I thought the Succubus bit at the start was pretty creative because that's a demon that isn't often explored in film. But the movie didn't really scare me because I felt it still had specific tropes that were easy to identify. Honestly, the scariest thing in that movie was the sorry-looking boobs of the girl in the alien fetus bit.
I thought the girl in the first tape was kind of cute which made me less scared of her hahaha :'-)
