  • Time to get in the mood for Spooky Season with a new project for the On30 Gruesome Gulch Railroad! This time out I'm building a creepy combine (combination baggage and passenger car) - starting from an MDC Roundhouse HO scale Overton Coach kit. I used a couple of these same kits last year as a basis for my GGRR excursion cars and was very pleased with the results, so it's back to the workbench once to see how thye might work for an On30 combine!
    Thanks for watching, amigos!

An engine with a missing cab from a boiler explosion and spooky lights as if it were driving it’s self would be cool.

    Hi Dave, Awesome as always!
While I saw the car disappearing in the tunnel (around 27:15) I had the impression that a tiny lit lantern would fit the guy's upper arm well. As if he'd say 'come follow my light into the dark', or if he'd be searching around for some souls, from the aft of the coach. Extends his story.
Might use some small optical fiber for that, taking light from the LED inside (or 2nd LED), running up from the floor across Mr Bone's back, along his arm, into the lantern (highly reflective lantern interior, or fogged paper again).
Alternatively, you could use 2 fibers and drill tiny holes to give him luminous eyes.
Might generally be difficult with the fiber radius, though, as one must of course not kink it.

Finally, some more Halloween train layouts in on30/ho scale

You're proving not all layouts must be prototypical if they are to display high levels of craftsmanship. I think it might be interesting to see a few fossilized bones embedded in the rock formations in the caverns.

I was not convinced that the width of an HO scale car would work well for an O scale build, I'm a believer now!

Spooky silhouettes inside the combine may add a little more interest... should be a simple add.
    Thanks Dave

My favorite time of year even though it’s still hot as blazes here in Texas I’m all about Halloween! Thanks Dave it’s fun seeing the train go around and remember many of the parts of the setting you took us along with for the build of each part, !

Great spot on job for this new addition to the passenger train of gruesome Gulch in the form of a combine coach I have to admit Roundhouse supply is one of my favorite HO scale train manufacturers. I have a five coach set of 34 scale foot yellow and red Santa Fe cars with an extra car in a separate box.

Very Cool Dave, a great addition to the Gruesome Gulch! Oh, by the way, my family and I rode the Big Thunder Mountain railroad at Disney World a few weeks ago and I could see modeling something similar 😁👍🏻

    Dave,
I just noticed the GGRR locos have no engineer!😮
When you get a chance how about a Scenic Sweetening episode? To construct a "GHOST LEE" engineer.👻
My thoughts were to use a heavier guage wire form. Painted flat black. To be mounted to the cab's floor.🤔
Then with dyed, painted, and weathered handkerchief fabric, or multiple layers of tulle, cover the wire LOOSELY. To give that flowing effect.😱
In fact during weathering dry brush the fabric with some iridescent and some black light paints. To give the ghost an inner glow.🎨🖌️
Now I know this a big ask but have you noticed the GGRR headend has no coal tanker? EVEN THE DEAD NEED A TIGER IN THEIR TANK. So how about a tanker with a smaller ghost as the Fireman. Namely "Casper".😇
If you were so inclined to animate Casper he could be rotating back and forth with the same shovel of coal. Or be a static figure lounging atop the coal pile.⛏️
After all the combine has room for 1,000 ghosts. And "There's ALWAYS room for one more."😫

Creepy, did you expect light to shine through the columbine doors? I think it turned out super Creepy like the rest of Gruesome Gulch did. Nice job.
