@Robo I haven't been to WDW since 2006, but the meal plan (and I assume they still have the same or similar) was where when booking your hotel/resort you paid in advance for meals. The plan I had allowed each day for breakfast at the resort, lunch at a counter-service restaurant, and dinner at a full-service restaurant, plus one snack such as from the ice cream carts that are scattered around the parks. For the full-service meal there were some restrictions on where you could use it, or you could pay a premium for those, but overall there was about a 10% saving over paying at the time of dining. Also, since I made my reservations several months in advance, I was able to get tables at restaurants that would be hard to get if I hadn't made the reservations so far in advance.
@Robo I forgot to mention that to pay for your meals at the time of service you just present your room card key, so the number of times you have to give someone a credit or debit card is reduced, which is comforting in these days of credit card fraud.
