The fact that you have a true consist of the Canadian with the way it is layed out just makes me so happy. I cringe at all the other videos I find with cars scattered about through the train in an order that makes no sense. Again what a gorgeous model, and the fact you are personalizing it to your personal adventure on the Canadian makes is even more special. Thanks for sharing this!
Take a break! I thoroughly enjoy the updates! I have an unrelated larger channel. Most people don't realize how much time it takes to make quality edits. We'll keep watching no matter how often you upload!👍
Glad you’re back. Awesome layout . As I plan my layout ,you are giving me a ton of ideas. Your attention to detail with both rolling stock an scenery is amazing.
If I were you, I SERIOUSLY would look into the effects of painting motorcycle helmets. My understanding (although based on what was certainly true a couple of decades + ago) was that the paint damages the stability of the helmet material, and the risks the helmet merely shattering on impact. However, as said, that was decades ago and may have only been true of solvent based paints, enamels etc that people typically used at the time. If you are using water based acrylics that may not be the case. I don't know, but I would recommend you research this if you have not already. I hope you find more time this winter for your fantastic layout! :)
Thanks for the heads up Wayne. I did a bit of reading before hand and didn't see any watch out fors. I have heard that myself though maybe it was back in the day when the plastics weren't as advanced as they are now?
Sometimes you just have to step away. Most of the time it yields great results when you go back into the work. No apologies necessary. Your backdrops are a highlight on your layout...really well done. Like the biking clips. Looks like they cross all generations. That hat is cool.
Man!! what an ambitious project you have in your basement! I remember that little layout you used to have - about the size of a bed, And then when you moved into your house and started constructing this huge layout in the basement. And you have created the impossible - a pretty good representation of the enormous and spectacular outoors of Canada. I thought that was a big deal at the start and even though I know it still has a long way to go, what an awesome result you have surrounding Banff. Who knew you could pull off the gigantic scenery that Canada is world famous for? You csn almost smell the pine trees. When that other side of the bay is finished it's going to be OUTSTANDING!! You'll walk into that bay following the train around and instantly be transported into the scene that most of us elsewhere in the world (I'm in Australia) have on our bucket lists - to travel across Canada by train. I love how you have resisted the urge to do what most modelers do - build urban landscapes. There's nothing wrong with modeling urban scenes but what a FANTASTIC scene you have built just a few steps down from your kitchen. Congratulations!! And thank you for sharing it with us. - Mike K in Sydney
Thanks so much for your support over the years Mike! I really appreciate it. Growing up in Western Canada, 99.9% of the time all you see is a single track and huge sweeping vistas, so that's what I like to model. I've also never been a huge fan of operating or switching so just running a big train and watching it go around the layout is my jam. Again, thanks for all your support. -Ben
Don’t worry about the lapsed time since your last vid! Understand the level of frustration with any of these platforms. Main thing is the appreciation I feel and want to express for the sharing of your layout build. Absolutely love the progress on the photo backdrops and how you’ve accomplished the different transitions both in colors as in the perception and/or illusion enhancement of the field/feel of depth. Very cool boxcar, love those Budd manors. Cheerio
Thanks for the update, Grant...but my comment is going to be about the Cockshutt 1955 tractor. That one is a rebranded Oliver 1955. My dad was an Oliver guy, and we had an Oliver 1955 when I was a kid...with cab...it was immediately recognizable, albeit the Oliver was green. Great to see it still in service. Thanks for sharing.
Haha wow no way! Yes, it actually says OLIVER on the back of the cab. I spent A LOT of hours in that tractor as a kid, it was our primary baling tractor. He still uses it for baling as well as his saw mill. Blows a lot of blue smoke but still getting the job done after all these years.
Layout is looking great I find doing my trees it takes alot of trees to fill the space your doing keep up the great work and detail to everything you do
I feel the struggle my friend! As a late 30s Dad with 2 young boys, I often go weeks without even stepping into the layout room, and the few times I do I don’t have the time to commit to a project, so I find myself fiddling with this or just run a train from A to B. My TH-cam channel and layout are a fraction of the quality of yours, so my hat’s off to you! Don’t be afraid to post up videos of trains running - not every video needs the full production value… thanks for the update!
Great to see an update on the layout Ben. Awesome work! I get it with the summer activities taking time for the model rr. Gotta enjoy the warm weather and green grass because you know it won't last. Those Honda bikes look like lots of fun!
You have a lot going on in your life and the model railroad will take a back seat to many things but it will always be there. Thanks for the update and I will keep inviting you to operating sessions here.
Thanks Ben, I was just thinking about you this week wondering how you were doing. I have aways enjoyed your updates but hey, life gets in the way sometimes… Love the Honda gang, I used to have a 50 then a 70 myself. I just ordered a Ukraine Peace car after watching your video. Thanks for the inspiration.
Awesome layout, truly Banff is one of my favorite train spotting places in the world, bonus points for modelling the first bike path I ever saw in HO :)
Thank you and I agree 100%, there's nothing like hanging out at the station and seeing the Banff west signal light up with a high ball. Haha had to, it's an integral part of that crossing. Still need to put the little fences in that pedestrians have to look up from their phones and walk around : )
When I saw your update, I was like “ok I haven’t missed Ben’s updates, I just missed them…” Great update and taking time with family & kids always takes a priority over a layout. You only spend time with your kids once as they grow up. Man did that ‘75 Honda Trail 90 bring back memories! I still miss my XR 80 and still miss having a bike to ride in the country and on dirt… Too many morons hitting guys on the streets for me to ride on paved roads with cars. Can’t wait till our vacation plans bring us your way Ben, can’t wait to visit you in the country. Maybe we can go for a ride too?!
Thanks for understanding! We have an XR80 too! It's a 1981 and currently my brother is working on getting the top end done. My goal is to have it fixed up for my son when he outgrows his 50. That XR80 is the most bulletproof bike the engine is amazing. It got ran over by a hay truck at one point in its life so it needs so cosmetic work but it still ran like a champ. Valve guides are what finally did it in. You let me know if you find yourself in Western Canada. Cheers!
I have been waiting patiently for the next layout update so the moment I got the notification I took a break at work to watch aha thank you! And nice layout keep up the good work ben!
@@BArailsystem No problem ben! You’re videos are the reason I got back into model railroading. I live in Calgary so cp is what I model also! Very inspiring so thank you!
Wonderfull. I have a small field in the back that your tractor attachment ground leveller would prove usefull. Your replica of your Marriage Train is really well done. Hell; everything you do is so well done.
Thanks! I haven't used the levelling cultivator too much yet. I spent a week getting the shovels switched around so it will pull evenly. I think it is going to work well for smoothing out our hay ground and following behind the Bobcat when it makes big ruts in the field from doing dirt work. Thanks for the comment. Cheers.
We're toying with the idea of starting to make farm content to document all the antics we get up to. Would make for entertaining videos for sure, its just so much darn work to film and edit it all.
That Canadian is unbelievable! I’m trying to find the Park, Chateau and diner cars and they are not easy to locate. Luckily the Manor, Skyline and bag dorms are still around, and the coaches should be coming out again soon. Very well done!
Glad to see you back making video's Ben. I'll always watch and while I have missed seeing updates from you, I totally understand that sometimes the energy to create them might be lacking.

Great to see you back Ben, I totally get the pressure of releasing videos - but even 3-4 minutes of a train running round Morant’s Curve, with little or no commentary, would still be cool!!!!
Thanks Ian! I can definitely make that happen : ) No waiting around on the frigid mountainside for trains either, we can make them appear whenever we want.
I'm re-watching this video as I already commented on another matter when it came out. Just and idea if you have not already found the river paint match you were looking for; could you paint the river on the actual photo backdrop where it transitions, with a color you find close? That way it will match.
Funny I was just thinking about how it's been a long while since a update happened when I was at work. Glad to see you enjoying your summer and getting some biking in with the kids.
