- Percussionist John Corkill aims to orient himself at the intersection between avant-garde new music and the general public. As a part of UChicago Presents' SOUND/SITES series in collaboration with the Department of Music, Corkill sculpts wonderful, curiosity-sparking performances that showcase the unique architecture at the University of Chicago. With drums, cymbals, chimes, bubble wrap, wood blocks, gongs, and more, Corkill takes advantage of the shapes, spaces, and surfaces of Mansueto Library and Saieh Hall to create one-of-a-kind musical experiences featuring the work of composers with deep ties to Chicago.
Praised by the Chicago Tribune as “jaw-dropping,” UChicago Presents' SOUND/SITES series, a collaboration with the Department of Music, pairs the Department’s accomplished faculty members with the stunning and varied architecture found on the University of Chicago campus. Featuring innovative programs curated specifically for the filming locations, SOUND/SITES places music and venue in a mutually beneficial relationship that encourages the viewer to pay close attention to the intricacies of both the performances and the unique settings. Conceived out of necessity during the 2020-21 season, this series is here to stay and promises to provide unique streaming experiences to viewers around the world.
Presented in partnership with the UChicago Department of Music.
