The context you are missing Josephine os that this kids were doing a different rutine each week, both a group dance and some of them solos, duets or trios to the point where they weren't training anymore. Just learning dance, after dance, after dance, and their technique went downhill.
That's why the moms are so upset: the teacher failed to properly train their daughters but then forced them into a contemporary ballet rutine.
It gets even worse in following seasons, because Abby starts bringing girls from studios that are training them properly and berates her original girls for not being on par.

I would love to see a reaction to the episode where they actually go see a ballet school from an earlier season (as Chloe was excelling in that).

Routine* but yeah I definitely agree with you m, they are made to do practice EVERY day and their moms make them feel like they “have to win.” I do dance(ballet and Jazz) and I’m 11, around their age and I only practice three times a week for an hour each time so I still have room for stuff like netball and school. The kids just wanted to have fun but Abby was forcing them to do competitions and not get taught properly. Btw if u read this whole thing u get a cookie.

I love how Jojo and her mom setting boundaries is the end of the world for Abby. That’s sooooo great, just teach kids that you have to cave to people who yell. That’ll never be a problem for them in adult life.
I think there is a balance. . . Many of ALM's kids on Dance Moms are working dancers. To a certain degree she needs them to do exactly what they are told. If she has a contractual obligation for these kids to perform in whatever capacity, legally they will need to perform. So while I don't necessarily advocate for pushing limits and putting children in uncomfortable positions, I can understand her rigidity in that sense. If she is sending them to perform professionally they are representing her.
That being said... JoJo didn't want to do it anymore, so I don't blame her Mom for pulling her. Many of the Moms push the kids way too much.
@@shamkho5096 balance is necessary. Anyone who holds a job and respectfully goes to work every day. Would understand that sometimes you have to do things that you dont want to do. You do represent who you work for and sometimes the things you are asked to do. Aren't always right. Some bosses are far worse then Abby at times. Yet people cant just say what they want. Its still important for kids to learn that you dont always get what you want to do. You have to do things you dont like or dont want to do. That is the reality of adulthood. Its also far less forgiving because Jojo also has her mom advocating for her. She wont have an advocate in adult life, not in the same light. Problem with dance moms is that its over dramatic for a reason, its a show. Besides, Abby has already faced legal problems. I agree that there are limits and even in a job, if something isn't safe or legitimately uncomfortable. Its okay to say something but that isnt always an option. You cant just walk away at everything that goes wrong in life. Kids today aren't taught to do hard things. I think sometimes in dance moms the parents are no different then other parents off screen. Swoop in take your kid out of something hard. Even though dance is hard. You are attending a class and that class competes. What else were these moms anticipating.
@@shamkho5096 in professional auditions and contracts, those dancers do not represent her whatsoever. she likes to say they do because it makes her feel important to think so. they represent themselves ONLY. No one in the professional dance world looks at a professional dancer and credits the teacher from their childhood for their individual career achievements. Abby is not the body performing. She is not the talent or the skill. She is not the dedication to developing that skill. She is just a lady who told them what they could improve and gave them advice on how to do that. No one in a professional audition is looking at these girls and thinking "oh no, she sickled her left foot, Abby Lee Miller must be a terrible teacher." the only reason they'll even know who the teacher was is IF they ever watched Dance Moms. And by the fact that Josephine has never watched it, we know that not everyone in the professional sphere cared to watch it and they know very little about it.
And in terms of quitting when you feel uncomfortable with choreography, that isn't a common problem in professional settings like it is on Dance Moms. Companies choreograph dances and if a dancer is struggling with a part of it, they either help that dancer figure it out or they change that part because they want their work to look beautiful on stage and they respect the professional reputation of the dancers they are working with. Putting a dancer on stage who is obviously struggling with the choreography is a detriment both to the dancer's career rep AND the choreographer's career rep. it looks like the choreographer sabotaged the dancer and the entire company intentionally. companies will not hire them if they think they will intentionally make their dancers look bad. working together is in everyone's best interest. that is not the case in many dance studios. Teachers think they have the right to push kids past their personal boundaries and tell them to shut up and be obedient. they don't. kids face boundaries, too, and those should be respected. Jojo's boundary was the intense anxiety she was having about performing choreography that was not suited to her and being embarrassed on television. Jess was right when she said JoJo had a lot to lose with a bad performance because her career was getting started. Jess understood the situation better than the other moms. A good dance teacher would not have told her dancers they were struggling in such an abrasive way. a good dance teacher would talk the dancers through their feelings of insecurity to teach them how to self-regulate those feelings if they come up during professional jobs later in life. a good dance teacher shows dancers how to handle the pressure, NOT apply more pressure and expect them to overcome it without guidance. they are CHILDREN. These girls are in therapy as adults because of that awful woman.
@@thecomorbiditycurator8018 I hear what you are saying, and in reality they are the ones dancing... but don't forget that ALM was also their manager, (singing, dancing, acting) not just their coach. I don't know if that is normal, but it definitely would help to blur those lines. You hit the nail on the head when you said CAREER. This is her career, and she is responsible if these children do not meet the contractual obligations.
I have worked in the figure skating industry for almost 30 years, around elite athletes... people who are Gold medalists, and current Olympians. I've witnessed similar hopping from one coach to another in that sport from almost all skaters. In that sport once you are working in the sport, you are a professional and your competitive career is over. There is only 1 Olympic level skater that I know of who stayed with their childhood coach through the Olympics. Parents think that if they switch up coaches it will make all the difference, and sometimes it does... There are points that you need a different coach to take you to the next level.
I'm sure each sport is a little different in how they view coaches, but I think you might be down playing their role a little bit. In skating you will never know about the coach prior to the one sitting next to the skater in the kiss and cry area. Michael Jordan was the one earning those points, not Phil Jackson. Coach Q didn't shoot those winning pucks into the net, but we still know their names and understand that they played a role in getting them there. Sure, the athlete has the talent but it's up to the coaches to develop that talent.
With JoJo I think she was just done dancing in that capacity, and that is okay. I still maintain that in their setup with ALM they were more like employees than students.

Jogo's mum "pulling her out" isn't "not pushing her outside of her comfort zone". It's supportive parenting by putting a child, _who is in the public eye,_ not thru undue embarrassment or stress. It was a GOOD decision.
Abby literally pointed at JoJo and implied her dancing was “fundamentally wrong”, and then she turned around and said “why is she crying? She didn’t look bad at all” once she sees JoJo was upset?
Reason why I don't like Abby, and this show in the first place. It is not a good environment for children and parents, because it too much useless drama than dance competition. Abby is a person that is Manipulative, condescending and pretentious.
You don't throw people under the bus saying that they are the worst dancers on the tier or point at some one who is "fundamentally wrong" Infront of a dance instructor.
I glad this show got cancelled, because most of the scenes are either cut out or twisted to make look like, this the true when is not. Or even deleted. Plus most of the children in dance moms are partially/not educated enough.

@@neitan6891 I think Abby always say what she don't mean, and sometimes certain part of this video might be cut or her words got twisted and made it look like that what she said. But if she actually said that then, that she is wrong.
What annoys me too, is how she'll say it in front of the girls but to the mom's, she'll twist the words slightly. And that's why I really applauded moms like Christi, Kelly and even Jess cuz 1) they stuck around becuz their child loved dance even when the teacher made some concerning/unfair judgement calls and 2) finally standing up and just saying no for good and doing it for the sake of their child. Don't get me wrong they still all have their flaws🫠 but they made some good calls... idk why I'm rambling so much but hope u enjoy this lol
That was seriously the best decision for JoJo to walk away because her career only skyrocketed after that episode!

Jojo had already signed her Nickelodeon contact by that point and have implied they going to stick out until the end of season but Jojo really isn't a ballet dancer. Jojo and Jess called it for what it is, an attempt to embarrass Jojo and create drama so they peaced out.
Jess found a technicality that allowed them out of their contract so of course they did.

@@help9737I think that is understatment. Abby went to prison for fraud, and came back to Dance Moms after release, which the show declined in popularity. While, Jojo went on to work for Nickelodeon on a number of project eventually making her own show -- The Jojo and Bow Bow Show Show (which also stared Nia, who did both), movie -- The J Team, and going back to E! to do another show -- Siwa Dance Revolution. Not mention merch, licensing deals and the like.

Turning on bare feet: welcome to modern dance. 😄 You get these wicked calluses and don't feel it anymore. And they can give your feet more slipperiness.
My mom was involved the EXACT right amount. I was diagnosed with gross hypermobility as an infant (my ankles could rotate 270° back then). She insisted I start with tap only to build my strength and proprioception, start having my feet going the right direction instead of flopping in. She consulted with every new teacher about my needs and not overstretching me once I started jazz and later ballet. She pulled me out if a teacher wasn't honoring that. She didn't let me start ballet until I was twelve and had built up tremendous strength, by high school I had good modern technique, and I got into a conservatory for college. I kept dancing after that and was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome in my late twenties. It causes terrible proprioception and constant pain and injuries. The progression my mom built and the dance technique I practiced regularly prevented many of the most severe problems EDS patients experience...until I was in grad school, had absolutely no time for dance or any other exercise, and my body FELL APART. But, yeah, my mom's involvement was only to protect my body and prevent typical hypermobility-related injuries (like she'd had in her twenties). I think I'd have quit dance, as much as I loved it, if my mom had been like these women.
I coached for a team that beat Abby’s hip hop team. I can verify she is WORSE in person. It was the episode where Abby smashed the second place trophy while screaming “we don’t take second place!” Glad I was just the tumbling coach! Lol😅
One of my niece's friends competed and ALDC lost to that studio. I've heard the war stories especially from the girl I believe named Eva that had a mom who owned a dance studio about 45 minutes from me. She said Eva looked like a praying mantis and the poor girl already had issues with her looks.

Its good to force YOURSELF to go out of your comfort zone sometimes, it helps us learn and grow as people.
If someone ELSE is trying to force you out of your comfort zone? Run. "comfort zone" is just a different way to say "personal boundaries". If someone is/is trying to cross over your personal boundaries? That can get dangerous very fast. As soon as they started saying that kind of stuff I knew that her mom made the right call.
As a teacher encouraging others to explore outside of their comfort zone is great. Forcing them to isn't. They have to want it to.
Forcing someone outside of your comfort zone is fine. It’s a saying that’s been around for years. I know it’s fun to hate Abby, but she really didn’t do anything wrong in terms of trying to get Jojo and Kendall to try new dances, but where she may have messed up is the allegations that she tried to embarrass Jojo.
@@mielissa100ify No. You're missing the language used here, and the word that are used are important. *Forcing* someone to go outside their comfort zone is NOT okay. Forcing someone to do anything is disrespecting that person's boundaries and thus implying that their concerns, anxieties, fears, etc are irrational and don't deserve to be recognized. *Forcing* a child (or anyone) to do something they're not comfortable with (e.g. is "out of their comfort zone") is abuse. You can absolutely encourage people to try something they're uncertain about, but you do that carefully, in little increments, with dialogue to make sure that person is okay and isn't developing any further anxiety/fear/trauma about the situation. If you're scared of performing on stage and that is, therefore, outside your comfort zone, then you take little steps to build up confidence for performing on stage. You sit in the wings and watch someone else perform. You practice or perform in the wings where no one can see you. You practice on stage with no one in the audience and just people you feel safe with standing in the wings. You practice just being on stage with a couple people sitting in the audience, and then maybe practice a few easy things that have nothing to do with your performance while there are people in the audience. Practice performing but facing away from the audience. Practice with just a couple safe people in the audience. Etc. You work up to what the goal is in little steps that yes, might make you anxious, but aren't the big scary thing that is outside your comfort zone. Eventually those little steps help you build confidence and you can get to the point of doing that thing that used to be outside your comfort zone. And you can do it confidently because you were built up for success and put in positions where people knew you could succeed, instead of being forced you to do something you were terrified to do by someone dismissive of your fears and anxieties.
@@mielissa100ify It really depends on context. A lot of parents will "Push a kid out of their comfort zone" when that kid is autistic, or maybe they want a kid to get over a phobia so they just keep shoving that phobia in the kids face. Often adults will shove kids into situations they aren't comfortable in because it's more convenient for them and not because they want their kid to grow.
Of course, none of this is relevant, because the other moms have no right to SAY that her mom should be pushing her. Parents judging a parent on how they raise their kid is considered pretty rude? Like "you don't know my kid" rude. It was very entitled of them to want her to prioritize their kids over her own.
IIRC JoJo was scheduled to leave to do Nickelodeon stuff and the ballet routine was supposed to be her last routine before leaving the show (most likely ballet to get a rise out of her mom considering Jojo was a hiphop/jazz performer primarily). Production does a lot to instigate drama. I suspect they were promised a triumphant send off like some of the other dancers on the show and basically victims of a bait and switch.
JoJo is doing what she wants to do and surpass her time with dance moms because her mom didn’t let her do anything she wasn’t passionate about. I respect her for that.
I would love to see more Dance Moms reactions! Granted, there's not a lot of ballet on that show, but the lyrical and contemporary might be interesting

the dance school i went to as a child had (and has) a pretty solid competition showing, including their ballet routines. the best part though is that the instructors and owner/instructor are all very familiar with competition level personality issues, and when parents start acting like the dance moms here (they do exist!) they are invited to leave and not return, it s wonderful to experience. the parents’ attitudes are really important at that age for kids to know how to behave when situations are hard and when there’s entitlement and cattiness, it isn’t welcome

ABBY LEE SHOULD BE ILLEGAL. When did dance studios decide to let the kids' egos guide what we teach. I taught for Abby Lee's 'friend' here in Ohio who doesn't let boys wear tights. These women are vicious and need to be stopped. It's like they use the world of dance to assert their dominance to talk down to each other and try to make up for the fact these moms spend more time on their phones than actually parenting.

Girl who hurt you. This is reality TV it’s loosely based on real life. A lot of the drama is what I called unscripted scripted which means the words are real but it’s missing some context that the producers cut out. In one of Abbies TH-cam videos she said that most of the time she didn’t get to pick what the routine was or the music. So before you go believing what’s on tv maybe you should know this is reality tv. Would you watch keeping up with the Kardashians and believe all the drama is real and not scripted or tampered with?

I really tried to watch Dance Moms but after 2 or 3 episodes, watching young girls getting repeatedly verbally assaulted by an adult was just too much. I think many of the alums themselves choose not to talk about the show because many of them had very bad experiences being so young and treated that way.

I did ballet, tap, and jazz as a kid, and I'm so glad my mom was ambivalent about it all. Most she got into it was helping choose the costumes for the big show every year.
My mom was really into it , but more in a goofy way where we couldn't understand why ballet as a platonic concept was so important to her.
But there was one set of parents in our studio who were normal people apparently, but the disowned their daughter when she broke her ankle coming down some stairs, had to leave dance college, and decided to become a primary school teacher.
Abby: she didn’t look bad at all!
Also Abby: literally just told her that she especially needed more work

Absolutely! She'll flip out, but I bet she'll get into it.
I was a competition judge for a decade. They don't win on merit anymore. For some competitions, the studio that has the most dancers will always win. It's a business. The touring competition doesn't want to take the chance that studios with a large draw won't come back the next year or for nationals.
i used to compete a decade ago, and this makes so much sense! my studio was moderate-sized, so we got a moderate amount of awards.

So they shouldn’t be called competitions, they should be called measuring events. That’s pathetic. It automatically dismisses anyone who can only afford or only has access to a small school.
@@ItsJustLisa i went to a small dance studio until i was around 8. never got ANY awards and as kids, we resented the studios always getting the awards. i always thought it was because we weren’t as talented as the others. then i switched to a bigger studio, and suddenly we got a lot more awards. still not the IT studio, but we definitely a lot better.
At my studio when I did dance as a kid anyone who wanted to compete had to have at least some ballet training. I still remember her telling me "if you want to go to Broadway you MUST do ballet"
Not only were those words being said, they were being said right in front of those kids. Disgraceful way for grown ups to behave and so unfair on the children.
🙌🏼I find behaving with such bad attitudes and disrespect towards others vile. I certainly don't find it entertaining and I don't think it should be promoted in any way.

I really wish she had taken the Joffery summer scholarship. She clearly had a talent for ballet and I think that she could have had a better future there than with the demon Abby Lee Miller always forcing her second fiddle to her precious Maddie.

It's hard to know whether the teacher or the parents are more self-centred and abusive. These poor kids are being manipulated left, right and centre. They don't stand a chance. Sadly, they will be scarred by these experiences.
It was a few years ago. So we can say they have been scarred. Some of them refuse to speak to Abby. Some of them have spoken out against Abby. Many of them don't dance anymore. I think their experience on dance moms has definitely contributed to them losing passion for dance.
I’m ignorant of the dance world, but should you be forcing a dancer to do a dance for a big competition that’s way outside her current skill set? I’m all for growth, but it has to be remotely achievable within the given time frame and considering her overall work load. It seems to me this was just meant to humiliate her. Not that the comments weren’t humiliating as well. Uhg. I want to put my daughters in dance but afraid of this type of atmosphere, though I know this is most likely fabricated.
To add onto clearly being set up to fail they only have a few days to learn and perfect a dance! Now I don’t know about anyone else’s experience, but from my experience it takes MONTHS to perfect a dance. Maybe you can get it done in only a few days if you’re really gifted but I personally would practice for AT LEAST a month!
It was a reality show with a great deal of exaggerated "fake fighting" no different from many reality TV shows. But the dancing, musical selections and especially the choreography went really well.
@Namri There’s a comment above this by insidiousChaos where they mentioned that at their studio this behavior would be enough to get people kicked out. Not everyone in is going to be like this.
While it may be something you might have to deal with in that world, you may be able to avoid it entirely or surround yourself with likeminded people who find it unacceptable.
I FULLY empathize in all directions. I had to decide against going to the level that would've given me more opportunities due to my schedule, the budget my parents have, and skill level in general. Similarly, to JoJo, my technique sucks. It is always the lowest grade I get during ballet exams, without fail. In relation to Kendall, about a month ago, I had a recital. A person pulled out because they went on a trip and wouldn't have time to learn the choreography, which is fully understandable (we had 4 weeks to cram this together, which for some people was 4 hours). As for Kalani, I get the "getting lost" part, because I sometimes can't make it to class due to health issues, so I catch up...eventually. And sometimes, my teacher prepares two understudies for numbers, (which included me in one case) just in case someone had EXTREMELY last-minute plans. Isn't fair when I still have my number in addition to being on pointe for the group ensemble at the end. Never happened...yet, but I'm still dreading the day I have to step in for someone else when I don't know the dance that well.
Just in general, ballet shouldn't be crammed together like this. They have about a week to prepare, no prior training, even if it isn't necessary in some cases. However, if you want to convey the message properly, you should be performing the steps exactly the way they are written. (I got called out in the middle of class once during a barre exercise for my head being in the wrong direction.) While yes, they should have, "sucked it up and went along with it," the other mothers are correct; with the amount of time Miller set for them, it would have never gotten a good score in a ballet competition.
I worked 10 years at a performance theatre and from April to June was competition season. Ballet was a category along with jazz, Tap, contemporary etc. The whole thing Is wild ! 1000s of kids and their parents in and out of the theatre
Looking back at dance moms now as a parent to a competition dancer is wild. My 10 year old dances JUST ballet 3.75 hrs a week plus all her other genres and technique classes. Those poor kids missed out on the the building blocks of dance once they started the show but I think everyone involved in the show is to blame for that not just Abby.
my mom was the one who enrolled me to dance, once she knew that i loved doing it, and we don't allow any parents to watch in our studio since it distracts the students. The young ones get help from the older students if they need anything. I danced in the same studio for years and it helped me get used to not having a guardian all the time and learn a lot about dance too, also I'm glad that my mom is nowhere close to the moms in the show.
In regards to the dancing bare feet, these girls most dance bare footed so they have built up a lot of callouses on the balls of their feet. It's pretty normal for Contemporary to dance like that. There are also "shoes" for girls to wear that give an extra bit of padding on the balls of your foot and allows you to turn a little easier. :)

Some of the girls do have ballet training just outside the senior team. The girl you are impressed by went to a professional ballet school for years before show. Chloe who was on early seasons also took ballet. Girl later seasons think Lily did too
As someone in winter/color guard, knowing what they do is insane. We spend 6 months of the year working on technique, skills, and learning new equipment. I spend about 3 months in marching band color guard routine and 3 months working the winter guard routine. 12 months learning new choreo every week is stupid on Abby’s part.
I know Chloe I the first few seasons of Dance moms did some ballet solos, Maddie did 1 as well, and Kendall also had a solo where she was holding pointe shoes. (Chloe actually danced en pointe)
There's a reason why you don't let moms into dance studio. Here in Stuttgart we have the John Cranko school. And moms are prohibited from entering.
Sorry I forgot something to say, dads are allowed to pick up their children. Sometimes I don't know why mothers treat their children so badly. They need to become individuals. That's what's the essence of dance is all about. Teach them them the basics, but let them do it their own way.
I know if my studio had a policy like that my mom would have absolutely hated it, but I actually would’ve loved that because it always stressed me out if anyone was watching the class.
Oh, I would hate that policy….I LOVE dance, and LOVE watching my girls dance, but I am NOT like those moms. I will watch quietly and quietly enjoy and be supportive.
I don't let parents into my music studio for this reason.
That would be a huge red flag for me. Way too easy for abuse.
there is a group ballet routine in season 7 called “the red bow.” It’s honestly one of my favorite dances in dance moms

@@iAmLisaAnn You are correct, Jess and JoJo left for Nickelodeon. The show just showed it as them walking out because of this dance. The producers obviously knew, how much everyone else knew I haven't seen mentioned anywhere. The producers also decided who got solos etc each week so they set that all up.

It was really "wild" (with a great deal of fake fighting) but the choreography, dancing, costumes and makeup were really great!

They didn't when they were in their actual ballet classes (when you look at the early years you would occasionally see them in their black leo and tights), this was them learning their routine to go on that week (which they usually learned in if they were lucky 2 hours)

i was in ballet as a young child, but unfortunately after my parents found out my mom was expecting my sister, after having her tubes tied mind you, i was taken out of ballet and later put down and bullied for any hobby i had after that because my sister became their perfect princess.

As a Highland Dancer, to reach to top one has to do ballet. Highland is about athleticism and strength therefore, ballet is the perfect mirroring to the training that I used to do. I trained, five days a week, Saturday was Competition time and Sunday a day of rest to repair ones muscles and give ones feet a rest. I have watched a few episodes of Dance Moms. My dance teacher was the best in the Country. I was lucky that we lived in the same small town as her, she produced such amazing dancers. I was not that naturally gifted but she brought out the very best in me. Mum saying I gave up everything!!!!!!!! Says it all sadly. In our dance classes Mum's could watch but not make comments. The teacher was the Queen.

Just because this show is a “reality show” doesn’t mean it’s reality. The producers ask the moms about their feelings about a certain situation and make it worse than it really is. I went to a Dance Mom audition and I saw Abby come out from a side door and breathe like she’s playing a character. I’ve also met her in person. She’s actually very nice. I think people need to watch these type of shows with a grain of salt. Drama sells, remember that.
I think a grain of salt is insufficient. A salt block would suffice.
I see what you're saying, but as someone who didn't watch the show, when I see clips I'm always genuinely concerned about the girls. Kids have a harder time separating acting from real life, and these women say HORRIBLE things about the other girls. Do the kids hear that? Do they see it on tv? And if it were me, I'd have to wonder how someone thought to say something so bad about me, and it would really hurt my confidence in dance and in life.
Yes and sometimes they even take the auto from another time. It can be hard to catch but when the camera goes to someone else, they'll add in the auto and our brain just assumes that person is still talking.
Also, sometimes they just leave things out. Like, the episode when Maddie forgot her dance and Abby was crying. The moms were upset that she showing favoritism, since she didn't cry when other girls forgot theirs. The mom's didn't realize Abby was crying because her mother was in the hospital. She was just so emotional that day it triggered tears.
It wasn't shown that after Abby told them and also told them she was leaving early to go be with her, the moms were understanding. There's a scene, when she's leaving, crying telling the moms the girls will be fine. The moms are just standing there. Abby's mother passed away soon after. If you just watch the show, it looks like she left because she was upset over Maddie forgetting her dance and the moms being up set with her.
Go watch some Dance Moms Uncovered. MacZBoss puts a lot of research into her series because there's more to the story than the producers want you to know

JoJo “left” the show because she got a contract with Nickelodeon; not because she chickened out because of the ballet duet; that was the scripted excuse for them to leave the show.
Jojo is the only one because Abby refuses to talk to Nia. After Abby rejecting hospital visits and phone calls, Nia and Holly gave up. Had Nia become famous, Abby would have happily welcomed Nia and Holly.
As for what was fake/real apparently this was fabricated as an In-show way of jojo leaving the show as jojo got a Nickelodeon contract and was going to leave the show regardless. The show just needed a storyline of her leaving.
