I did this is a little boy in the backyard after seeing a survival expert do it on TV works very well but you're doing it the hard way the way I learned to do it is make a bowl and put lots of debris around the drill it caught fire in less than 5 minutes I could barely get the drill out of the way of the debris Catching Fire in the same way you put the drill in your little pile of debris just put the pile of debris around the drill I used bark like in a bowl shape you can build with you little sticks and stuff catches fire top and bottom picture's worth a thousand words in this case I'm trying to explain it PS total respect I learned a lot
Great vid. Now just my opinion here but some people think bow drill is easy, from my experience, the only easy part is finding/making the 4 components needed to make the set. The rest is luck, practice and the will to keep trying.
Never have seen a decent vid that lists and explains or prioritizes the suitability of various woods, for the constituent components for drill-sets and saw-sets. Best as I can tell, so far, yucca stalk is prolly the best spinle material ... no idea, tho, which materials are "next-best" ... I am supposing that the top piece can be made out of anything, so long as it has the proper shape and does not impart any appreciable friction ... I belive cottonwood makes best hearth ... Alternatives ?
i had mine all sent, saw a ton off smoke and powder building up, i cut a notch and i went at it again and the spindle was polished as well as the fire board and it created no smoke or ember.. what can i do to stop it from polishing?
Cody if you see this I have a few ? 4u I'm buying land out in your neck of the woods what did you look for when u b bought your land and if you have any tips please share I've always been a big fan of you and your earthen house thank you
I remeber trying to rub some sticks together in the back of the classroom in kindergarten when it was nap time, I got it to start smoking but no ignition. lol
@seanmulhall I feel that. First time I made fire from friction took me a long time to figure out. I first heard that you can make fire from rubbing sticks together when I was about 5 yrs old. I tried right then with no success. Then I did an experiment in 6th grade with a dowel and drill which was smoking but unsuccessfull. I lost hope till I found out about the powder collecting notch. Long story short, I have been trying for a lifetime and at 27 I finally made fire by friction. It blew my mind
The other guy says “quest for fire”, which is the name of an interesting movie about cavemen searching for fire after their fire is accidentally extinguished. These men then go on a search to find more fire.
Came here interested in what material found in the desert of Arizona someone would use for cordage for a bowdrill. Apparently you have to bring shoelaces or sacrifice your clothes. (spoiler)
This is not easy, and needs to be practiced many times to get it down. There is nothing easy about this. Don't over look that tinder bundle, very crucial.
Cody got caught being naughty and is cut off from many sights. Barefoot is not a good example for kids to emulate . He and Dave got into trouble and separated in a bad way. Sorry cody but truth be told.
The hard part is foraging for the entire bow drill kit. anyone can do this with a peice of cedar bought at the store. Honestly, based on how little smoke I saw, the screeching sound, and how loose the spindle fit into the board, and how short his strokes were, I don't think fire was actually made here. I think they faked it.
Lighter at Walmart: $1.50 and according to the BIC website it lights over 3,000 times. If yer going out to camp or hike spend the buck fifty and join the 21st century kay?
You know that butane condenses to a liquid at temperatures < 40 F right. at that point you would be better served having a ferro rod and turning that $500k into char cloth.
I bet all of you are never going to have to do this. How people prepare to bug out as they say only to move near their property line or a few miles in. Where are you going? You're going to be found. All you're doing is gathering material for the bigger person.
That's so he can do the entire vid in 5 minutes. If you need to see a separate vid on how to carve a notch in a board, I'd suggest never leaving the house.
Again just my opinion, but matches suck plain and simple, give me a $5 ferro rod and a sharp object rock, iron, steel or glass to strike that rod and I'm much happier.
I think his feet are in for big trouble eventually, I went barefooted around my place for a couple yrs and got bone spurs on both feet, heel and ball of my feet, it was painful just walking, I used different methods to get rid of them and it took me almost a yr. Even the indians knew that they needed foot protection.
@cjoIIProductionz Here is one that actually worked, and was not faked. Look close at the difference. Look at the form, the position, how deep he makes his stroke, ho tight his hand it to his shin. This is what it looks like when it's done right., same as when i use my bow drill set. Now, compared to the Cody Lundin Not me in the vid btw, just someone who can really do it. th-cam.com/video/O_twLri9UjE/w-d-xo.html
I ALWAYS have three things on or near me. A fire kit, multitool, and water. The fire kit always has a BIC lighter, magnifying glass, char cloth, petroleum jelly coated cotton balls, and a magnesium fire starter. With only fire and water, you have a good chance of survival. A bow drill would be my last choice. Too much work.
Grandpa the Grey try this instead of Vaseline, it's magical: www.google.com/search?q=murray%27s+beeswax&prmd=sivn&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwix2eTHttXYAhVI-GMKHX_7CIgQ_AUICigC&biw=360&bih=564#imgrc=5O4FOWh7zzJHnM:
@cjoIIProductionz , Can't help it, it's in my nature to question the man on the pedestal. Besides, the clip shows every mistake one can make...and it still supposedly worked? Come on... Also, the vid never actually shows a successful ember either. It just cuts straight to blowing the tinder nest into fire....he didn't get this to work. It's fake.
@pcjsleader Or you can be a woman and give birth to a "living breathing thing" that will eventually grow up and have the power to give birth as well. Thats being more like god then slamming to stones together.. Food for thought
Lousy video. Why not show the actual cinder/ember created? They go from smoke to showing ignition in the tinder. The most important information needed is recognizing a proper ignition source. Just sayin'.
"Try going on a short nature walk" would imply having a little foresight. Most people understand the words "nature" and "hike" to mean they will be outdoors. Even more would realize "nature" and "walk" generally involve more natural surroundings including trees and animals. Still more would realize this "nature walk" generally means being away from such things as roads and people. Its not rocket science to think of the toliet paper BEFORE taking a dump.
You generally dont get lost in the woods on accident. You are doing some activity in the woods and get lost. Ok there is like a .00001% chance you would be drugged and wake up in the woods but come on buddy- for the 99.99999% of the time if you are going to be in the woods you can pick up a lighter before going.
Dual Survivor brought me here! You rock Cody! I've learned alot from you. Thank you!
Cody is the MAN! Everyone wants to learn survival techniques and to Cody, there is no other way of life. Survival is his way of life.
Cody and Dave were my favorite team. After Joe and Matt I haven’t watched many episodes. I wish Cody would get another survival series show.
I found out about Cody on Dual Survival. Definitely one of the best in the world at survival skills.
No matter how many times I see this I still love watching people make fire for the first time.
Sean the Silver Fox
Awesome Work Cody. Keep up the great work. Kind Regards Nicholas.
Just having to make primitive fire one time will teach you that you can never have enough matches.
It is one of my dreams to attend Cody Lundins survival school.
Awesome! I need to learn how to do this.
Good survival training .
keep up the good work
that was a better love story than Twilight my brother.
They make this look so easy. Ive tried it and it is super hard. I couldn't even get any smoke.
It's Cody Lundin Man vs wild ! miss you ,how are you !
Right On Cody !!!
nice videos cody,keep it up
They seem to be his favourite, they are pictured in his book 98.6 degrees
Amazing cody!!!
Good video Thanks for the lesson.
cody lundun is beast
Creating fire ( a living breathing thing ) is as close as man will ever be to being a god.
Cody you haven’t posted on TH-cam in awhile. Hope you’re doing well bro!
Good job man!

@Snbkr rough up the end of the spindal with a knife edge by dragging the edge across it (same effect as sandpaper.)
I see Cody uses a Mora knife. Cool!
i had mine all sent, saw a ton off smoke and powder building up, i cut a notch and i went at it again and the spindle was polished as well as the fire board and it created no smoke or ember.. what can i do to stop it from polishing?
I Cody ever needs to make a bow drill using shoe laces--he will be out of luck.LOL
Cody if you see this I have a few ? 4u I'm buying land out in your neck of the woods what did you look for when u b bought your land and if you have any tips please share
I've always been a big fan of you and your earthen house thank you
Making a bowdrill vs. drilling with your bare hands.
Which way is more sufficient in making fire?
@punbaca yeah it actually does. it took me a while to get it down now my record for a coal is 5 secs
I remeber trying to rub some sticks together in the back of the classroom in kindergarten when it was nap time, I got it to start smoking but no ignition. lol
When I start proces i get brown ember instead of black why does it need more power
you need a bit more pressure
@seanmulhall I feel that. First time I made fire from friction took me a long time to figure out. I first heard that you can make fire from rubbing sticks together when I was about 5 yrs old. I tried right then with no success. Then I did an experiment in 6th grade with a dowel and drill which was smoking but unsuccessfull. I lost hope till I found out about the powder collecting notch. Cody, What kind of wood was that drill & fire board made from in this video bro?
@RandomShellAccount the funny thing is that that actually would inhibit you from being able to use the bow drill method
I see you ever at DMAX 👍
It seems like when he say people fixate on ignition, that the word people refers to someone other than him. He's just above that.
what city in AZ does he live near ?
That music G
The other guy says “quest for fire”, which is the name of an interesting movie about cavemen searching for fire after their fire is accidentally extinguished. These men then go on a search to find more fire.
@jscanyon I
Thanks for the good news, cant wait to see the new season. I'll tell everyone!!!!!
whose shoelace did cody steel?
First Last steal
What a great lady. Pay attention, girls.
@punbaca getting the form down for the bow drill is a lot harder though.
Is Cody the new Chuck?
Try employing pine roots for rapid natural cordage.
wow your smart, all those big mature words you think of.
2019😤
Came here interested in what material found in the desert of Arizona someone would use for cordage for a bowdrill. Apparently you have to bring shoelaces or sacrifice your clothes. (spoiler)
👍
are you just gonna find a fire board w/ a perfect indention in it? how do you make all the parts?
This is not easy, and needs to be practiced many times to get it down.
There is nothing easy about this. Don't over look that tinder bundle, very crucial.
Only thing is that the lighters, magnesium starter and everything else can and will run out, get lost, break or whatever.
Fala brother!!!
I agree sir, but I'd still try through those items first. I've made bow-drill fires. It's a lot of work and still would be my last choice.
Only Cody and 2pac can pull off the nose ring without looking completely gay.
Cody, are you and little Dave going to have another season together, I hope ?
thomasbigfoott he’s big Dave, playa
Cody got caught being naughty and is cut off from many sights. Barefoot is not a good example for kids to emulate . He and Dave got into trouble and separated in a bad way. Sorry cody but truth be told.
Indention? What happened to the word indentation?
The hard part is foraging for the entire bow drill kit. anyone can do this with a peice of cedar bought at the store.

hey there good
@achilles444 I left a comment on the Discovery Channel and will get others to do so. Hope they get the hint !!!! Keep up the good work...
not enough light in the video and not enough detal on how to do it
oh so when ur lost in the woods there must be walmarts everywhere right?
The idea is forethought- use of wipes is besides the point.
Never understood what being barefoot had to do with survival?
Abe Froman You beat me to it.
well i prefer wipes they get u cleaner just like ill take the bow drill any day over a lighter
Lighter at Walmart: $1.50 and according to the BIC website it lights over 3,000 times. If yer going out to camp or hike spend the buck fifty and join the 21st century kay?
I miss Ray Mears...
@Forsure3333 hahah i did that using this method and my room smellnig like a campfire for two days lol, luckyly i have hardwood floors lol
up yours
you dont need matches when you can use a lither
You know that butane condenses to a liquid at temperatures < 40 F right. at that point you would be better served having a ferro rod and turning that $500k into char cloth.
And if you hold a butane lighter in your hand for a minute the heat from your body will allow you to use it in sub 40 degree temps.
The bow drill is for a hobby. You just dont get it do you?
I bet all of you are never going to have to do this. How people prepare to bug out as they say only to move near their property line or a few miles in. Where are you going? You're going to be found. All you're doing is gathering material for the bigger person.
@RoyalDragonusa Go watch dual survival youll see.
Pre fabricated parts.
nose ring
That's so he can do the entire vid in 5 minutes. If you need to see a separate vid on how to carve a notch in a board, I'd suggest never leaving the house.
Boy Scouts make friction fire, big deal. so does all the guys and girls with survival videos on TH-cam.
Again just my opinion, but matches suck plain and simple, give me a $5 ferro rod and a sharp object rock, iron, steel or glass to strike that rod and I'm much happier.

Friction means heat really are you serious omg your smart
@Snbkr Add more surface area m8
@actonbath thats funny
@cjoIIProductionz

That sound is so fukn anoying xD
i like a lighter and shoes and $500,000
really try going for a short nature walk and go off the path and get lost then what
8 people couldn't do it.
Lousy video. Why not show the actual cinder/ember created? They go from smoke to showing ignition in the tinder. The most important information needed is recognizing a proper ignition source. Just sayin'.
It just looks like a tiny glowing ember. Do you really need a separate vid to show you what an ember looks like?

Ahh....irritating noise at :32.
@RoyalDragonusa are.. you questioning... Cody? wtf is wrong with you..
