  • If you’re in a relationship and trying to figure out if you should be opening a joint account with your partner, or how it even works to open up a joint account, then you’re in the right place.
A joint bank account is very similar to a regular account - you can open either a joint chequing or joint savings account, and the only difference is that both people attached to the account can access it. Both people can deposit money in the account, withdraw money from the account, write cheques (if it’s a joining chequing account), or make online payments.
For some people, it feels like opening a joint bank account is the best way to split finances, and it can be useful in some situations, but there are a few things you should consider before opening one up.

What kinds of accounts should you keep individual to contribute to your financial footprint? My husband and I have a joint chequing account, but separate credit cards, is that enough?

Great vid, great to see this kinda Canadian specific content!
Qsns for yall: 1) Where does the CDIC fund come from that pays everyone in case of a bank failure? 2) Nosy but what factor/percentage is your U.S audience relative to Canada?
Lastly, a year or 2 ago I watched an 'end of year/roundup' video mentioning one of yall goals was reaching a 100K subscribers... well you're almost there and so please take some time to celebrate and be proud of the accomplishments! Cheers

Thanks so much - we're glad that you liked it! 😊
Good questions - 1) CDIC's fully funded by premiums paid by their member institutions (ie. the banks and federally regulated credit unions); they don't receive any tax dollars or public funds. 2) For long-form videos, we have a really high percentage of Canadian viewers, and then the US is the second highest location!
And ah, thank you - we're getting really close! Hopefully we can check that goal off and celebrate it early next year 🙏🏿🙌🏻

Unless you don't trust your partner you don't need anything but one joint account. It's works for us for over 40 years. Either you trust that the other person won't drain the account unnecessarily without your consent, or you end the relationship.

Merry Christmas Steph and Den. I was wondering, and this is funny, do y'all have a wallet, or do you just use digital wallet on the phone? I'm asking because I lost my wallet on the bus and it was so easy to replace my cards and I'm no longer gonna carry my cards in my physical wallet, just cash. But anyway, great video as always: I hope y'all start posting more videos per week in 2024, lol, y'all have 2.5 years to reach that $$ goal.

Hey Michael! Merry Christmas and hope the holidays are going great 😊🎄Yes, we still have a physical wallet, but we’re noticing ourselves using it less and less especially with digital wallets being so clutch these days. That’s too bad about your wallet though - but the digital wallet route might be a better bet moving forward.
Haha yes, we’re definitely still working toward our goal! We’ve actually got a lot of really cool things planned for 2024 so stay tuned 👀

Lol once you’re married, then share the bank account
If you can share the bed but not the bank account there’s something wrong

I think it's important to say that you should not be opening a joint account if you aren't married. This is rule number one.
