I dont get why people claim that she is bad. She is very good and consistent live. Very unique voice, interesting singing style, she is not singing off key, not cracking or sounding like bad karaoke like some singers do.. remember Del Reys SNL performance...

Totally agree... I think the main problem most people have with her is she has extremely easy songs that showcase little range. Pretty sure there are couple hundred high school sopranos that could give her a run for her money.
+Archiduc De Belgrade 1:28-1:32 If you don't call that off key, then you're tone deaf. She's also very quiet and lacks any kind of power during the entire performance. She almost comes across as somewhat flat but I think it's largely because she's so quiet.

Besides that, she has a terrible singing voice but the song is catchy, so that's not what I'm defending. I dont know how many time I’ve seen this video over the years it been out…but I am finally commenting…her voice is amazing live she got that sound that reminds of the 80s rock…and I swear when the chorus comes in, my eyes are locked into those hips…she is so beautiful…

For all the people saying that Ellie "sucks" live, she is actually more talented live then most artists. I saw her in concert and she sounded exactly like her album. Also lights is a very hard song to sing. :)

That's not really saying much in a world full of autotune, she is average at best when you compare her to real artists that sound phenomenal live/better than the CD live.
No she doesn’t suck, but she does benefit from backing tracks during her performances.

Okay people you need to learn the difference between a live performance and the CD. Yes this is different, because she has a band behind he and its a more for a TV performance. You can tell by her vocals, its a more relaxed version. And its not straining, it her vocal style. She is amazing, deal with it kids.

Since this aired Ellie has become one of the most popular singers in the world. I loved this performance and I saw it live. She is one of those talents that the more you listen, the more you like what she is doing. A terrific young lady and a real credit to the music industry.

its just the peak of her range, and so it comes out somewhat light and breathy as to not blow up the mic. you can really only do the top peaks of your vocal range two ways, light and somewhat breathy which is more quiet, or you have to go for it and go full blast to sing the top with clear tone, pitch, and quality. mad props to her, i didnt think she would sound anything like the actual song being so unique and different and she sounds virtually the same as the track. true singer right there

Beautiful. Ellie is such an underrated performer. It's so crazy to be that there are artists like this who not only write their own music but have a trademark, unique voice that just comes from within. Adele is like that too. But quite honestly, most artists aren't like that. The ones who are doing the best commercially can hardly sing a lick (I'm looking at you, Taylor Swift and Rihanna).

I don't get why people hate on her voice. She's got grit, which I love, but she definitely can sing and does hit those high notes. Why everyone expects live performances to be cookie cutter versions of the record is beyond me. I love that she sings her songs differently each time. As for this particular performance, not her best, but lets be honest with ourselves, SNL performances notoriously sound pretty bad. The studio just isn't good for live music in general, I think.

Probably because you know a thing or two about a live performance. Hiccups and quirks are what make live performances special. If I wanted to hear the studio version it's a lot cheaper to just stay home. But that's not why I go to live shows. I want to see and hear the human behind the music-not a robot. Why do you think Milli Vanilli or Ashlee Simpson caught so much heat way back when? Fake is fake.
I'm not saying she made any mistakes either. But hearing those hints of rawness in her voice and how she works (and I don't mean "struggle") to hit a few of the notes... It's magic.

Its not often that a pop singer comes along that has somewhat original music, can actually sing and pull it off live and doesn't dress like a slag. Good work Ellie Goulding, I appreciate you a lot
I know... she doesn't sounds the same live... but let me tell you just one thing, she is an amazing singer, as a soprano, she can hit the high notes (you call whispering) with no problem. She's also singing with a huge number of, what i call, "effects" on her voice, so she's not a flat singer, she goes up, down, and plays with the song every time, and to do that, and do it the way she does, it needs a lot of talent and practice. I'm a soprano too and I know how hard it can be to control the high notes, so yeah, she is doing a great job.

Her mic just usually isn't loud enough. Most of the high notes in the chorus, which is basically the whole chorus, are all in head voice, and that can sound significantly softer than chest voice (which is basically your talking voice). Ellie's voice is already soft so her head voice needs better amplification or else it will come across as weak.
