Well I can use either hand with the trowel, but if I were you, I would invest in a speed skim, once the ceiling is coated there would be very little climbing up and down the steps. I am 73 yes old and I skimmed a 20sq metre ceiling over artex on my own last week, only took 3 hours. Good luck.

@@secretDIY-ey4tv See, this is the sort of comment that I actually find of no help what-so-ever to a diyer's channel and actually comes across as being quite cocky...'Well, I can do this/that even if you can't....' but of course, I don't want to come across as being one of those posting silly, rude comments.
Firstly, respect if you are 73 and doing ceilings 20 m2. Most plasterers have long retired by then simply because of worn out bodies.
Most professional plasterers will HAVE to use the opposite hand at some point, for getting in awkward places etc but this comment suggests an ability to use either hand at will. Really?? I somehow doubt it. One or two strokes maybe but putting on? A whole wall/ceiling? So when a plasterer feels like it, they decide to plaster left handed for a day. Why didn't I (or every other plasterer in the world) think of that in 27 years? That would make a person very rare in the plastering world!
A speed skim is good when you've learned how to use it but is only used to 'flatten in' between coats, usually the first but not always the second. That depends on how good your second coat is. It saves getting up and down for that process but it WILL NOT result in "very little climbing up and down" for the troweling-up process. That is unless the ceiling is finished like that (with the speed skim) in which case it's time to call in a plasterer!
20 m2 over artex in 3 hours? I doubt it. That means enough plaster to do the whole ceiling would have to mixed up in the first place (good luck with that) or a second, even third mix would be used which means it's going off at different times. See, getting more complex now!
The first coat would have what is called 'bled through' which is the artex pattern 'showing through' (don't want to get too technical here!) and can only be eliminated when the plaster has started to 'pick up' (going off hard enough to flatten but not too hard to take the second coat). That's when timing times comes in which is a whole topic on it's own.
What about prep time? Were the biggest 'lumps' knocked off first? Careful doing that because of asbestos content!! If not because the artex was 'smoothish', it'd still take a thick coat to cover adding to setting time. If it was PVA'd, the PVA should be tacky (ideally but can be gone over dry if applied the day before) so that takes time. If SBR was used , that'd slow suction time right down so the plaster wouldn't even be hard enough to trowel up. I'm trying to keep this explanation simple otherwise it'd be 10 pages long!
But even if those circumstances don't apply (which is impossible as one of them HAS to (if done properly!), 3 hours to finish? Must have moved like lightning or be Kirk in disguise!!
Like I said, I don't want to read as negative but a comment like that would probably get slaughtered on a plastering channel. Just saying. 🙂

Little tip. When your doing a ceiling whether its stilts or off a hop up. Make sure your head is a fist width apart from your head and the ceiling. Otherwise your gonna hurt your kneck and shoulder looking up all the time. This way your looking forward and along the ceiling. If that makes sense.also I only use board finish now. I use board finish on all backgrounds. Not just plasterboard. It trowels up much nicer. Multi tears a lot.

Yes, put your thumb on your head and your little pinky should be able to touch the ceiling, you're over stretching. Also if you lose the ceiling, sponge float flat and mix fresh , always check the dates on the bags.

It looks good to me mate. Doing ceilings is the worst; I dread doing them. I'm a self-taught DIY plasterer and have never had a problem with multi-finish, but I have had bad batches. But It was probably my lack of experience and not doing it every day that made them crap. so at the end of the day as long as you are happy with it that's all that matters

Dirty water is a killer from my experience. It sends the plaster off much faster. So get an extra bucket or two and keep water clean. I always use multi finish if there is a better plaster for DIYers then I would like to know.

Using dirty water is a plasterer's trick to make things go off quicker. It's the last thing a diyer wants to try to use. Give yourself a chance- use clean water in a clean bucket every time or you'll end up in a right muddle! 🙂

I sort of 'stumbled' on this video by accident!. As a plasterer of 27 years experience I'm not going to say should have done this/that blah blah as it'll only confuse you (and every other diyer watching). You've mentioned Kirk so if you've been following him you'll learn from him. What I will say though is, from as best as the video shows, you seem far too low- stretching to put it on. That will make it really hard to do and will 'knacker'your wrist even more. As for learning to plaster left handed if you're right handed, good luck with that one!! 🙂

@@secretDIY-ey4tv Hello Paul. No problem and thanks for the kind reply. I agree- too much rubbish spoken about too many things or just silly comments which are plain rude. I follow and put a lot of comments on a plastering channel (Plaster Master Smurf if you want to look him up) which are often aimed at apprentices or diyers. Apparently, I'm his biggest contributor which is quite nice! Some of the topics will be quite advanced for a diyer but there is a lot of helpful info as well. As you're aware of Kirk, he has covered just about everything with some great tips for learners but a lot of his things are way out of a diyer's league.
Plastering is one of those things which takes practise. I don't have a problem with people having a try for themselves but I have been called in to sort things out many times- even work done by 'professional' plasterers! 🙂
