There’s no way Rhaenyra would have killed her best friends son/little brother. He’s just using that to scare Alicent, he’s so abusive. If it wasn’t for Otto their relationship would be in a much better place.

He did use it to manipulate but she 100% would of had them killed. That is how hereditary dynasty's have always rolled throughout history. She wouldnt have wanted to but would of had to. Doesn't matter if Aegon diddnt want to be king or not. Someone somewhere would have propped him up as the rightful king and used him for their own ends. History is full of these situations including the war of the roses civil wars in England which is a huge inspiration for this story. It was even a problem in ancient Rome where the heir wasnt the oldest son of the emperor.

@@childrenoftheabzu ridiculous. This is fictional land not Rome or England. Rhaenyra was shown and only shown would never kill an innocent brother. It's hinted that Viserys got an infectious desease from getting cut by the throne... So this illness is a metaphor for power and his position as King killing him slowly... Around episode 5, the actor confirmed it was a form of leprosy eating away his fllesh....

By thinking Criston is Rhaenyra's paramour, as in side piece, Joffrey thought Criston was "just like them", as in more open minded to a libertine lifestyle. Joffrey didn't know Criston walked away the moment he realized Rhaenyra had no intention to marry him. Criston was literally asking for a death sentence for his trangression. He's too puritanical. He's like a psychotic Ned Stark. Therefore when Joffrey approached him saying "we know about your little secret", Criston took Joffrey's politicking as a direct threat to his honor and his white cloak. If he was willing to die himself, what is he gonna do to someone else? The key here is to remember that Cole is a knight from the middle ages. His conception of morals and honor are not like ours. There is no "one night stand" in his dictionary.

He suggested Rhaenyra as a stop gap measure to keep Daemon away from the throne to which Viserys wholeheartedly agreed with. Daemon is chaotic at best and a raging psychopath at his worst. @Jose Hill it's all part of Otto plan. He gets daemon away from him as his current heir. By suggesting rheanerya, a woman, knowing they will not accept her. Sending his daughter to the king to start a union so Otto can get a boy heir from their union. It's all his plan.. at the end of episode 1, when rheanerya is crowned heir, you see the smirk on Otto face. He knows what he is doing.

How Cole didn't get fired for this is beyond me. Or killed. Not only did he harm the king consort, endanger the heir, cause havoc at a royal wedding, he also killed an innocent man that was a guest (or more) of house Valeryon. He should've been punished for this and I don't get why he wasn't.

24:45 That man was Ser Harwin Strong. We've already seen him at least twice: First, he was the cute guy who was laughing and loving it when Rhaenyra came back into camp all bloody from killing the wild boar. Second, the night Rhaenyra snuck out into King's Landing, dressed as a boy, remember when she stole something from a vendor just to be a smartass? And then as she was running away, a guard or a knight stopped her, then realized it was her, and let her go. I think he just told her to be careful. He absolutely thought highly of Rhaenyra.

Otto has been playing Alicent from the start. She's been too naive and a friend to Rhaenyra but dad is manipulating, he want's his line on the throne and now he's telling her that Rhaenyra is gonna kill her kids. The thing that pushed Alicent over the line is how Rhaernyra gets away with whatever she wants. Otto forced Alicent on the king. She's doing her duty and makes no mistakes. Rhaenyra goes around town, has sex in public and with her guard, lies about it including to her bff and gets away with it. Alicent now hates Rhaenyra's privilege. She also used her privilege to seduce Ser Cole. He's not from a noble house and he's really in love with her but she treats him like a play thing and if anyone found out, he'd lose everything he's worked for. When Jooffrey teased him, it pushed him over the edge. So he and Alicent now have something in common, their anger at Rhaenyra. Alicent wore green to show out for the Hightower's in front of everyone. But Rhaenyra & Alicent haven't aired anything out yet and they still have bff love for each other. Viserys is suffering from leprosy, and it makes him look a lot older than he is. I think it's a metaphor for how he's not suited for the throne. Lord Strong is the father of Ser harwin 'breakbones' strong who is really strong and he grabbed the princess. He's also the father of Larys Strong, the clubfoot who is now feeding info to Alicent. It's warming up.

The ending montage was my favorite scene up to this point. Give me the red hue of the weirdwood tree glowing in twilight, give me the dim lights, give me the gloomy ambience of a GoT wedding with an equally gloomy Ramin Djawadi soundtrack and hook it to my veins! That pause when Criston looks up and you hear the final note of that haunting tune is very well done. The uncharacteristically heartfelt exchange between Otto and Alicent is that decisive moment. It's the Tywin Jaime "we can establish a dynasty that last a thousand years" scene. We Light the Way is the motto of House Hightower. This is the episode the Greens come into their own. Out of this cursed wedding the ties that bind are lost and found forever. Rhaenyra and Laenor were exchanging wedding vows, but it was Alicent and Criston who were getting “married”.

I think that Sir Criston prides himself as a morally strong and and above "immoral behavior ". And another man who according to that society is morally corrupt called him out on his own corruption and he couldn't handle that. He probably felt that Joeffrey deserves to die or at least doesn't belong in the company of the King Consort, maybe it goes against his ideals. Either way Criston and Alicent show behavior of people who idealized the world and believe that they should uphold those traditions and values and think they are above it all and fail to see their own immorality yet judge others.

Technically Rhaenyra did not lie to Alicent. Alicent was accusing her about her sleeping with Daemon but technically Rhaenyra never slept with him. Rhaenyra at this point has no reason to trust Alicent. She knows at the end of the day that Alicent is queen first, Otto’s daughter second and Rhaenyra’s friend last. And if she told her that she had slept with Cristin then Alicent would ruin her and Aegon would become heir. She doesn’t trust Alicent to have her back and not tell Otto so she used the loophole that Alicent provided to protect herself and her position. Daemon didn’t take Rhaenyra’s maiden hood and that is the truth.

Another favourite moment of mine this episode was Alicent’s green dress.
Even ignoring the storytelling with her costuming: from wearing blues before marrying Viserys, to red after the wedding symbolising her trying to fit in with the Targaryens, and now green as she accepts her identity as a Hightower, it’s such a pivotal moment for her that had been building up for some time.
She spoke up and defended Rhaenyra to Viserys which in her head, got her father fired and sent away from King’s Landing leaving her alone. So to find out that both her husband and Rhaenyra lied to her probably made her realise that she would never truly be one of them and she decided to carve out her own identity within her family. It’s the first time she stand up for herself this entire season.

Everything he's warning her about is true, her sons lives will be put in danger by Rhaenyra taking the throne. He did what any father in westeros would do, find a good match for his daughter that would benefit the family.
Cole did tell Rhaenyra 'no' that night. He tried to leave and she blocked the exit, he asked her to stop and she ignored him and kept going. He didnt have the ability to consent since she was his boss and was actively rejecting his attempts to stop it from happening.

So I think Cristin Cole’s overreaction to Joffrey can be explained a little because of his station. He’s from a very minor noble house on the border between Westeros and Dorne, so minor that he’s probably only a couple generations away from peasants (like Petry Baelish in GoT). Peasants historically in medieval Europe were actually able to marry because of “love”, believe in fairy tales like the princess running off with him to distant lands etc. unlike Rhaenrya who’s bound by duty, and always lived with debauchery and scheming of King’s Landing. So it wasn’t a big deal when she asked him to be his side piece but to him it was shattering his world view 😂 and then Joffrey was the final nail in the coffin.

Otto and Daemon are actually more similar than I previously thought. Both second sons who are brutal and unrelenting in their pursuit for power.
Yes, Daemon loves his family no doubt, but he also lists for power. He pursued Rhaenyra, attempted to tarnish her reputation, just so he could marry her and get closer to the crown. And when he couldn’t get her, (this isn’t a spoiler since you’ve seen the next episode) he weds Laena Velaryon, rider of the largest dragon in Westeros, and daughter of the second most powerful family in Westeros.

@@Caraxes_RoguePrince Writers aren't god. What you see and hear in the show is what matters and you can have very different interpretations of what Daemon is and wants because he's such a non-character both here and in the book. You can't truly love a person while abandoning her naked and alone in a brothel, destroying her public reputation so she has to depend on you marrying her and then abusing her and strangling her. IMO he just wants to maintain his house supremacy and for many years he only could do that through Viserys and now he can keep doing it through Rhaenyra and as we see he's capable of being abusive to her when she doesn't act like he wants her to act as queen. He loves his family in the same way Tywin loved House Lannister. As a weapon against others, as a way of keeping the dragon glory and authority but being abusive, offensive and a constant headache to his individual familiars.

As they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. That is the story for Rhaenrya, Alicent and Criston Cole so far. This to me was the best ep of the first half. What an explosive way to round off the prologue. Now comes the gqme of thrones. The next ep is def a bit weird cause you're forced to adjust to the time jump and all the new characters. It's still a solid ep imo, it's fault is that it has too much information overload. But after that comes the best eps.

I loved that scene with Otto and Alicent. As brutal as it may seem, he was speaking the truth. If Rhaenyra wouldn’t do anything to her children then Daemon absolutely would. Be mad at Otto all you want but he was definitely playing the long game and in this game you either win or you die. There is no middle ground.

    • @perseusveil9376
      @perseusveil9376 ปีที่แล้ว

@@jjh2456 Yep. History teaches us that things can get out of their control very quickly for royals. Even if there were no hostility between them, other nobles could use other princes and conspire and push their claims. Tradition dictates that a male son comes before a daughter, and Viserys should have made more efforts to change that. Codify his own royal choice of heir as law, even before cultural customs or keep forcing new lords to repeat their father's vow of loyalty to the female heir. He made no such thing so both Aegon and Rhaenyra have a valid claim, which ensures chaos.
Its the same with the bastards, really. No matter the appearance of peace or your non-bastard brother's good intentions, everything can change in a day and just one ambitious or insulted noble knowing the truth could be the birth of a potential rebellion, and as per Aegon: "everyone knows, father. Just look at them". Rhaenyra and Viserys are most definitely two of the main instigators of the war by simply inutility and by maintaining Daemon's lunatic ass close to power (at least Viserys did some things regarding this, while Rhaenyra outright married him lol Talking about respecting Viserys' will.)

I don’t get how you don’t understand why Otto is out.. Viserys started seeing that Otto was only out for himself. And therefore cannot be trusted. And Alicent has NO REASON to mad at Rhae! Rhae owes her 0. Alicent is her undesired step mother not her friend really anymore. Unless Alicent has feelings for Rhae or Daemon there is no reason for her to even care as much as she does about Princess Rhae Rhae getting her groove her on. Yet she does. Weird. And Rhae would never have Alicent’s children killed unless of course they come for her children and that’s another convo for another day… back to Otto, he’s been trying to hook up Alicent with the King since Jacaerys for gain so he’s a douche canoe 💯.
