Big Gun Duel - German Artillery Targets England

  • The English town of Dover found itself in the middle of 'Hellfire Corner' between 1940 and 1944, when, as well as aerial bombing, its residents had to contend with direct German attack using huge artillery guns on the other side of the English Channel.

Ah yes, the v3 cannon. A complex system propelling a projectile using several charges fired within the weapons own barrel. Very advanced tech for 1943, for the humans at least. It's a known fact that Himmler was friendly with the Heibash Union of star system RH-31, who used a similar design as the v3 on their own long range cruiser, named after their faithful follower, Admiral Karl Dönitz. The v3 system was delivered as a gift to Himmler and deployed in record time.

The last lady is like my 90 year old nan. Grew up in the east end. Was evacuated against her will during the phoney war period and returned early 1940 as she didnt want to be away. Her birthday is also the 1st day of the blitz which she remembers her party being ruined by plaster from the ceiling falling on the food. Many years later there was a bomb threat from a neighbours house and then police kindly asked her to evacuate. Her reply "I didnt move for Hitler, I ain't moving for that silly sod neither"

Britain had a massive navy to protect convoys and an even bigger supply fleet to bring food and goods from its entire empire, rationing was introduced not out of necessity but to prevent stockpilling from anyone that panicked. My dad was in the US 127th AAA gun Battalion stationed in this area during the early part of WW2. He told stories about these shelling duels. He said that they would have lookouts stationed to watch the German's activities and that they would sound the alert when they saw them get too much activity around the guns. He also said that after the flash of the guns, you had about a minute before the shell would hit. He also stated that the Germans would try to catch them unawares and shell them during times of low visibility, such as foggy days or evenings. He told how on one such instance, they had no warning, and a shell nearly killed him. He said that the shells used weighed as much as a small car, but crossed the Channel in a minute before striking.

My late father (Captain Royal Artillery) was in charge of a battery of radar assisted 9.2 inch guns based at Dover Castle. Their maximum range fell short of the French coast but they were very effective against enemy shipping. That said, it is sad to record they failed to score a hit during the notorious "Channel Dash" by the German battleships. This was due to utter confusion and late orders to open fire. The targets were out of range. Father said he was never so angry and frustrated as he was that day.

The Jerries used to watch where their shells landed. The subsoil around Dover is chalk, and a hit registered clearly as a white crater. They could plot these hits on a map, and correct their aim to compensate for wind, air density and temperature. These craters were filled in as rapidly as possible. I heard somewhere that fake craters were laid out on the ground, to mislead the Jerry gunners.

So the British used railway guns and hid the guns in railway tunnels. When the American troops were being shelled at Anzio, they couldn't figure out where the shells were coming from. Nobody though, maybe it's a railway gun and they are hidden in a railway tunnel. Maybe the British could have told the Americans this little bit of strategic information. Maybe the Americans could have asked the British for ideas.

I’m amazed at the range of those things when looking on a map. And to hear them firing, you can hear what seems to be the flying shells after the initial explosion. I wonder who though that Dora and Gustav weren’t put there; only Gustav ever fired and it was only once, so it seems like a better use to have them doing something instead of laid up in storage. However, shelling (or bombing) civilians in peaceful British cities isn’t tactically advantageous, at least in my opinion.

"Peaceful British cities" didn't really exist after the war started. It was total war--every place was contributing to the war effort in some way or another (and Dover more obviously than many, given the strategic importance of that part of the Channel).
On the flip side, though, you're quite right that shelling/bombing British civilians did very little for the Germans (especially when compared to the effort they put into it).

Same here - I've been through Dover a number of times when going over and back to the continent. I've never spent time in the town but I've heard you can get tours of some of the tunnels.

Nice film. These British guns were used to fire at the Kriegsmarine's Channel Dash too, wholly ineffectively

I went there (Batterie Todt) just a few months ago. Unfortunately the huge gun pointing at Dover has been removed for some 'trust issue'. But it is still a nice place to visit. They have a PAK, an 88 Flak, loads of small stuff. Ah, and a railway gun.

Was born and brought up in Dover, there is a piece of armour plate from one of the German guns on display on the seafront, been there as long as I remember (so at least since the 1970’s). The street where my wife grew up had a house unlike the others on the street, we later found out that the previous house in that location had been wrecked by a shell.

    Wow! That was some gunfight!
Perhaps suggestion about another one very interesting but lesser known topic: German occupation of the Channel Islands - particularly Sark? :)
