    That is really solid sounding! And the kic sounds really good. I love the way its tuned and the way you play it, no need to use triggers to get a good sound for metal.

      I agree, no need for triggers. Maybe if I was capable of playing at 300bpm it would be an issue, but that's unlikely. I don't know if I could ever play fast enough to where acoustic drums couldn't keep up.

    Thank you for the video. I was surprised to find a video meeting me right where I’m at. I have the exact same interface and will be using garage band. I have a 57 for my snare a Beta 52A for my bass drum and unfortunately two more 57s for overheads. I’m looking forward to seeing how my recordings turn out. Once again thank you.

    Your recordings sound much much better now, good job! :) Mic placement is far more important that mic quality ... nice pun at 2:38 xD ... Garageband rocks, I used it to "play" the MIDI generated from MuseScore for my "Bleed" drums transcription by Meshuggah. The best drum recording tip anyone ever gave me was simply to learn how to hit the DRUMS hard, but the CYMBALS very softly ... it works!

    • @RyanAlexanderBloom
      @RyanAlexanderBloom 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s true. If you play the cymbals hard and the drums soft there’s no amount of gear that’ll fix you. I’ve seen drummers like that and it enrages sound guys live and in the studio. Massive sloshing hats and no snare backbeat.

    • @RyanAlexanderBloom

      I think if I upgraded to 8 channels or more, and got some actual studio quality condenser mics, I would probably be better served with a real DAW, like Reaper. That way I could potentially put out album-worthy real drum tracks. For demo quality 4 mic stuff, GB is enough for now. Though I can see how anyone with recording skills would be irritated by its lack of features.

    wow extremely great video. funny enough i also have a 404 interface. but what i did is have 1 overhead and for the 4th channel i bought a cheap xlr splitter. which makes that channel split into two channels and i can have another mic in there. only problem with that is i cant adjust volumes on either or mic, but i use them for my toms so its fine lol. but great video learned about pads from this which i didnt have on. thanks alot!

    • @RyanAlexanderBloom
      @RyanAlexanderBloom 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve thought about splitting channels but I can’t think of a good way to do it an maintain a stereo sound. Pads are key when you have a mic right up on the snare, for instance. It makes it easier to dial in the level when you just start quieter with the pad.

    Great tutorial.
    Your room is still a little lively, so add some DIY sound panels. It will make a world of difference compared to the egg crates.. and they're cheap to make.
    My basement was basically an echo chamber. The sound panels made my area a completely new experience. I have one brick wall, so I left it untreated for ambience, but I have plenty deflectors (guitars work very nicely for this😁).
    I made the sound panels from 1x4 pine. Then nailed paneling to the back side. Then I filled them with Rockwool insulation. Finally I covered them with cheap fabric, carefully folded the corners, and stapled it to the back side. Then used L brackets to mount them to the wall.
    Stupid me bought a dell instead of an imac. I dont know how to use a daw. But garageband looks simple. So, I must rely on engineers to come to my house when I want to record. Every engineer so far has loved the difference it has made in their customer's recordings. I havent even built the bass traps yet. (And probably wont). I like how it already sounds.
    Again, kudos for a great video tutorial. And no, your cymbals are not too quiet. 😁

      I normally open the closet doors, there’s another closet behind the camera too, and this time I didn’t. I think that makes a big difference. The inside of the closets are irregular while the doors are obviously pretty flat and reflective.

    Nice! I do a very similar set up but my overheads are pointed towards the snare at the same distance. The overhead closest to the floor tom is sitting lower than the other overhead, to get more floor tom and ride sound, but keeping the same overall distance to the snare. For me, the overhead mics being different distances from the snare makes the mix sound a bit washy. I find that I can get away with less tuning adjustments if I get those mics the same distance. Also, I wanted to thank you for the videos on drum ergonomics, I am playing so much more comfortably now!

    • @RyanAlexanderBloom
      @RyanAlexanderBloom 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am still experimenting with mic placement. My room doesn't sound that good and my mics are not good either, except my kick mic, which is actually a real D6. I'm torn between good cymbal sound and poor tom sound or good tom sound and poor cymbal sound at the moment. I can get either but not both... I think you are right though, getting the snare in phase is important and I didn't really think about it too much on this video.

    • @Mark-fx6gl
      @Mark-fx6gl 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RyanAlexanderBloom I use a room mic when playing or recording with the band so that does help for the tom sound; usually the overheads are EQ'd for the cymbals and the room mic creates more boominess for the toms. one of those cheap wm57's placed 10 feet away or so might do the trick.

    • @RyanAlexanderBloom
      @RyanAlexanderBloom 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. I always like the sound of real drums. I’ll take slightly less than perfect any day if there’s a human playing the part on an acoustic instrument. Perfection isn’t necessary, sounding human, for me, is better.

    • @joshua.merrill
      @joshua.merrill 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RyanAlexanderBloom Early Black Sabbath had worse sounding drums than what you were able to pull off here, and they created an entire genre! Human drummers will pretty much always be better than programmed, and I'd even argue that a simple setup like yours sounds better than an 8+ mic setup, because those start up sound like sampled drums.

    • @RyanAlexanderBloom
      @RyanAlexanderBloom 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joshua.merrill in Bill Ward’s defense almost all drumming was recorded with only 3 or 4 mics back then and he tuned very different to how I tune, plus drums and cymbals were worse quality overall. When you get drums into a full mix, having adjustability with close mics is handy... but plenty of great albums were made with the absolute minimum equipment. More gear doesn’t always mean better.

    • @joshua.merrill
      @joshua.merrill 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RyanAlexanderBloom I definitely wasn't knocking Bill Ward! He's an amazing drummer, the records just did a poor job of highlighting it. However, in the same vein, if Ozzy clearly enunciated all of his words, he probably wouldn't be as well-loved as he is. Same with Robert Plant. I think there's something about a certain lack of clarity that actually adds to the musicality, like how a well written story allows you to use your imagination instead of providing so much detail you have no real immersion. I think that's why I'd argue for less mics on a drum kit. I'm definitely going to be trying a 4 mic setup like you for an album I want to make this year. I'll probably add an extra mic for the kick, though, just because it's so crucial in metal.

    • @RyanAlexanderBloom
      @RyanAlexanderBloom 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      what you really want to do is plug in the kit as a midi instrument and not record it as a audio instrument. I don't know what you're doing now, but on most newer kits its just a USB cable.On some older ones its actually midi cables and you would need some type of adapter or interface that could handle that.

      Sounds pretty clear, your kick sound isn’t my favorite. Nothing wrong with it but something about it doesn’t quite match the tone of the other drums. If you just export the song you made in the “share” menu it automatically becomes a single file type of your choice. If you want the stems, or individual tracks, you can mute everything but the one you want and the export will only contain what isn’t muted. You have to do this for each track individually.

      Once the video and audio exist it’s all inside the computer. You need lots of special cords to get everything in there. Mic cables, usb cables, potentially FireWire depending on your interface. But once you have video and audio created, it’s super easy, barely an inconvenience, to put them together. You could also do it in windows movie maker, GarageBand, final cut, premier… probably at the worst case you have to hit File-Import.
