In my personal experience, it doesn't matter what you do to get rid of your karma, you have to go through the phase because you are binded energetically and helplessly in the situation. Unless the time comes, you don't feel released yourself from limited I which is cause of all suffering. But one thing for sure happens. In the chant or surrendering to divine, you become observer to your situations though going through ups & downs of life. Thats how I understood that there is only divine in the world & rest of it's just like toddlers play.

Being an ignorant 19-21 yo at that time. I was into the degeneracy of this material life. Drugs alcohol womanising and gambling. Fast forward 10 years. I've reflected on my mistakes and search for the Gita and other scriptures on my own. Looking for redemption.
