  • Is Mega Man 4 Actually Underrated?? Let's find out! Mega Man 4 NES Complete Walkthrough Let's play!!
In this video we play through the entirety of Mega Man 4 to find out if it's really as underrated of a Mega Man game as my comment section would lead of to believe, and also because it's a fun game and uh... I like playing mega man so... I hope you all enjoy!

    My Mega Man stage philosophy
    1. Never start in a screen with enemy
    2. Almost always have teaching elements though sometimes take risks
    3. Never reward the players for being bad at the game like filling them everytime or checkpoints everywhere
    4. Do not make alternate paths unless it's necessary
    5. ALWAYS have a theme
    6. Theme and Boss should compliment each other
    7. Do not make stages too short or too long (for what they are)
    8. Introduce gimmicks set pieces gradually
    9. Almost never have 'that one spot' in a stage where everyone fails
    10. Compliment weapon usage

My philosophy is surprisingly just like yours, but with some extra rules.
Extra rule I - Aim for remarkable, usually upbeat stage music that makes the player sing/hum along while they play the game (and later, too, when they are not)
Extra rule II - Make it clear the "pranskter" nature of the traps and challenges, so the player can laugh along when they fail on them.
Extra rule III - Make it clear that perfect runs are not mandatory.

      "Rule 5 - Always have a theme."
YES, always! Every stage in a megaman game has immense individuality. Even when different stages repeat themes or elements (Clown man and Magic man, for example), they are still made very distinguishible. Memorable music also helps a lot at this.

Mega Man 4 is my favorite classic series game next to 9 and 11. The robot masters are all cool and the music is nice. The weapons are pretty good too (Rain Flush, Dive Missile, Pharoah Shot, and Flash Stopper are OP)

Great walkthrough, despite a few missteps, tooter! This game might be my personal favorite, though I gotta give props to Mega Man 9 for climbing my personal ranks to near the top after recently playing it for the first time in 15 years. Mega Man 4 is underrated, for sure, and a well-balanced game from weapons to stage design to overall challenge and length.

MM4 has been my favorite of the series as well, partially because for a long time it was the only Mega Man game I had. :P But it also is the easiest in the series, IMO. I also think it's slightly better than 3 despite that, since there isn't a softlock spot like in 3. Even if you run out of energy for Rush Jet in that one spot you need it, you can abuse the respawn glitch with the spiked watchers and refill it.
You missed the second E tank in Skull Man's stage, right of the long ladder. Also missed the respawn glitch at the sunset area, which let you summon hordes of those floating spike watchers. And the free E to the left in Cossak 1. I repeated Skull Man's stage to get 9 E's and 9 lives early. Which, IMO, coupled with the charge shot makes MM4 the easiest of the series. Being able to repeat stages for lives and Es made the later game so much easier. Though there's a lot of spare lives and E even without the easy grind. So my order tended to be Skull - Toad - Bright - Pharaoh - Ring - Dust - Dive - Drill. But I hate Drill Man's stage, mostly the four-block rising platform section.
Ring Boomerang will also go through armored enemies, like those critters in Skull Man's stage with the armored backs... and Skull Man's shield.
Bright Man uses his Time Stop on a certain multiples of health (I think it's every 4 units, but I don't remember). Shooting him with the Mega Buster when you enter will essentially disable the Time Stop, as he'll never be on that level if you're using Rain Flush.
Hulk Hogan is the jabroni of the Earth as well. That's why the game lags when there's a lot of sprites on the screen. That or the fact that it was an 8 bit system made using a 1.79mhz 6502-based Ricoh 2A03 CPU, and a GPU that had a max of 25 colors and 64 sprites at one time. But had the Iron Sheik broke Hulk Hogan's legs in 1984, there would be no lag on the NES. No war, and the world would have reached a utopian state.

I remember all these f'ing stages by looking at the menu, let's go.
Toad man is a must. It's the easiest with just the buster. There is no special technique other than playing it safe. Even Toad man can be beaten by this. Just attack when Toad man charges. (Also props for knowing Escargoon)
Bright man is next in the weakness chain, but he is quite harder than the rest. Luckily, his stage has an easy E tank and life. Getting back Rush coil is essential to not lose too many lives. I face palmed a lot at the last swinging platform section. Remember to shoot bright man with the buster once, then flush him.
Pharoah man is also easy. Make sure you get the balloon (frame perfect jump or coil). It's incredibly useful. When platforming, jump a bit before you think you need to. The shooting platforms use the same engine as Guts man's platforms of instant death. Pharoah man does freeze to brightness.
Pharoah shot beats ring man. All I can say is rush through the stage. Rain flush the enemies you easily can beath and use Pharoah shot on the ones you can't. Fighting Ring man is the toughest battle in the game, even wily without beat is more pathetic. Play things safe. Never stand next to ring man and attack while he moves.
Dust man's stage isn't hard, just mildly annoying to avoid all hits. Of course, I'm not Gamechamp3000 and I have a life, so I'm not doing that. Dust man has the easiest hoss fight. If necessary, use balloon, but you don't need to. Jump over and stop at the projectile distance.
Skull barrier is useless against an invulnerable dive man, so just go through his stage to get the power. If needed, use the bathroom during the boss fight. He only reacts to you. Moving makes him fire and shooting makes him jump to you, then put his shield up. When his shield lowers, he'll walk right into you. He'll also never do the same attack 3 times in a row. Fun fact, you can hold the attack button while having pharoah shot active to charge and release it without making skull man move. It does nothing, but it's funny. Base you movement on how you plan to fight him.
Dive man has my favorite area. Even though it has instant death everywhere, you have rush sub from Toad man. Just play a little safe. I never used a save state for most of the level. Dive man will charge when he's about 4 units in front and behind. Like Skull man, he never does the same attack 4 times in a row. I would suggest keeping him stuck on an edge. His charge attack will go directly to mega man's horizontal position. Then fire as he shoots missiles.
Drill man's stage isn't hard. Just play carefully like the rest. For the boss himself, his sneak attack is beaten by jumping wildly back and forth while making sure you switch sides while on the ground. His missile attack is fired while running across the screen at certain intervals. I'm not sure what they are, but they exist. Also, you can hurt him under ground with rain flush.
Corsuck stage one is an easy climing stage. Feel free to spam rain flush on armored enemies. The boss is also pathetic, no more moving on.
Stage 2 is easy. You can also let the first 2 pinecones fall off the stage by holding onto the latter. Square machine is a bit tricky. Slide with fast speed and jump when medium or slow speed. You will be safe.
Stage 3 first auto scrolling section can be cheesed with wire, but I thing the weapon ammo is more important. You can't cheese the second one as you will be crushed. The roach twins are easy to beat with Pharoah shot that you can in down with.
Feel free to explore stage 4 as that stage presents no danger with all you skill. Yes, even noobs. Don't even bother wasting ammo in Clawsack. The buster does good enough damage as is. Just slide past him.
Wily 1 is a easy met only level. Dancing mets need 2 rain flushes while all others need 1. Metal daddy is a bit more dangerous, but you probably have full HP. Also, Tooter, he's weak to ring boomerang.
Wily 2 is just a bit long. There is an easy grinding spot. There is a narrow hall with an enemy spawner. Go into the weapons menu, switch to pharoah shot while holding the fire button, and sit back as you get weapon ammo (you may need to jump to collect it). Don't waste too much weapon ammo on the boss, tako trash. Use 1 drill missile, then run behind him to spam buster. He loses his hitbox because a dev managed to make his hitbox a drill missile wall.
Wily machine number 4 may eat the rest of your E tanks, but don't worry. If you fear damage, spam skull barrier. You won't use it for anything else, anyways. You can use wire on him.
Wily capsule is pathetically easy. It can only hurt you by touch damage when standing in the middle of the screen. You would need to jump into him if he spawns anywhere else. Spam pharoah shot and you win!

But still plenty and I think 4 is better than 2 & 3 anyway because it's an little bit more polished and balanced of the difficulty curve than 2 & 3 has. It has some annoying design moments here & there. But not as much as 2 & 3. Mega Man 4 is still great. 4 is definitely underrated! It's my favorite of All 6 NES games! I know how you feel about Skull man's stage besides the fact that I don't need skull man's weakness!

Mega Man 5 is pretty forgettable & boring. It doesn't stand up that much compared to the other classic titles. With maybe the exception of Mega Man 8 as it's on par with MM5; aside from the hilarious bad voice acting. I never played Dr. Wily's Revenge. Didn't know there was one.

@bezoticallyyours83 Graphics are nice. But the levels are pretty bland and not engaging. The only one stood out to me was Wave Man's and Star Man's stage. Everything else is meh. Not terrible. But not great. Just meh. Which is also what this game is as an hole. Meh! It's better than MM8. I'll say that. But the rest of the Mega Man titles are far better than MM5.

@@jaretco6423 Crystal Man and Gravity Man's stages are also fun and memorable. I had fun with Charge Man's stage, partly because I enjoy most train stages and partly because it's a good place to stock up on lives. Napalm and Gyro's stages were kind of annoying. Stone's is decent but not as boring as Hard Man's.
A lot of the weapons you get aren't great though, and Power Stone is the worst shield weapon in the series.

Pretty ballsy to start with Pharaoh Man and Skull Man. I feel like this game is one of the very MM games that practically forces you in doing the proper boss weakness order lest you want to throw your controller against the wall.

      - Toad Man is stupid easy to buster.
      - Dust Man is as well.
      - Drill Man and Skull Man are moderately easy with enough practice.
      - Dive Man's easier with charged buster shots or rapid fire lemons than his weakness.
      - Bright Man requires knowing what health intervals he'll fire off Flash Stopper, and new players back in the day didn't know this. If you know, he's easy. If not, get rekt by stop-n-stomp.
      - Ring Man and Pharaoh Man are the most difficult to buster.

its been awhile since i played and beat all of them (still havent beaten rockman & forte since i have it on hiatus) but this is a general list how i rank them all:
Mega man 8 (i know just about everybody hates this game with a strong boner but my earliest memories of mega man started here....big MM8 voice acting fan too)
Mega man 9 (a true return of the classic series since i think it pretty much dots all the I's and cross the T's on what makes a great classic mega man....probably objectively better than 8 but this is my story.)
Mega man 1 (its rough around to edge to any normie buts the game that started the franchise and tried not to bullshit you with all that smoke and mirror but with true difficultly and if any one claims to be a mega man game, they need to beat it legit with no pause glitch or any of that...mega man 9 is like 1 but with more style.)
Mega man 3 (an almost perfect mega man game but they had to ruin it with the doc robot stages since it really makes me not wanna replay it as much as every other game in the classic lineup but i understand that was a design choice since capcom was still experimenting on how to stretch the games out. snake man stage layout fan btw)
Mega man 6 (i was debating on both the placement with 6 & 3 since i kinda feel the same way with both of the games. i pretty much had to do some nitpicking like looking at their soundtracks and the special weapons in general. i do like the rush adapters since those practically run on unless energy but i do think the controls feel a little janky the most with tis game imo.)
Mega man 11 (i wasnt too sure where i would really place this one since i still think its too early to tell but here it is....i think its a graphical from MM8 to this game since it has a plastic buzz lightlyear type of face feel and i dont find it impressive. the double gear system is pretty interesting since it does give you more ways to play and a good way to bring the yellow devil fight again i guess lol but i do think they dropped the ball by not including proto man or bass since im more interesting whats going on with them.
Mega man 4 (i think most people can agree its a pretty good mega man game that rarely have any bullshit boss fights or any bad stages. its usually so so for me but i can safely say that bright man's time stop is the best time stopping ability in the classic series and i love going through stages while putting those stage hindrances to a standstill....i think drill man's stage is the place to make the most out of it.
Mega man 7 ( this game may be as old as me but i dont think it's really that underrated but i do think the large sprites in the game can throw anyone off since it kinda gives the game a fake difficulty feel that could possibly be elevated with multiple playthroughs. its the first game with bass so it does earn bonus points for me but i do think it did a better job implementing a mega man and rush transformations more better than 6 did....the music is pretty standard for a mega man game while some of the weapons like shade man's weapon is really cool with how you can just shoot and quickly slide into it (the pro way of using it) than just shooting at some wall.
Mega man 10 (staying with the 8 bit look was a stupid choice imo but thats not why i think its much lower on the list but simply due to the fact that it was a follow up to mega man 9 so i had a lot of expectations so while mega man 10 is much of a downgrade from 9, it did do some things just fine like the dlc stuff and how they implemented past robot masters into boss fights. i dont particularly like the weapon selections that much since i think the water shield, thunder wool, and the chill spike weapons dont do anything for me except waste my time but i dont think those are the worst weapons ever. i think the soundtrack has like less than 5 songs i would legit listen to outside of the game so thats a letdown for me there.
Mega man 2 (everyones second coming of jesus and what everyone considers the best since its #2 in the classic mega man lineup and no one cant see that their obsession with MM2 is pretty unhealthy. in a perfect world, i would sing the songs of praises like everyone online but it would also mean that all the other mega man games are trash too so im not having any of it. if it wasnt for the insane dick sucking and the whole smoke and mirror games that everyone loves to do with this game, then i could safely say that mega man 2 would be my 2nd greatest mega man game or favorite bong.
Mega man 5 (nothing of value will be said since everyone knows this game sucks and maybe it did like 1 or 2 things right.)

I never understood the hate on MM 4-6 as a kid. Playing at Zappers (rent games in store and played on their systems) the buzz was always "I hate the buster charge, this game is not as good as 2 and 3." I love MM4 its my favorite from the series personally, because of the introduction to the mega buster charge. Perhaps I'm biased because I was gifted 1-3 and saved up to buy 4 with my own money.
*edit* yes I said mega buster multiple times on purpose!

    5. Mega man 4

Nope. 2, 3, and 6 are the best ones. Then it goes 1 > 4 > 5. I can't bring myself to put 4 in any other place. 2, 3, 6, and 1 are just too good. Not to say it's bad at all, none of them are bad, but there is too much good competition. Now rank it against the X games and it fares much better...
