Great tutorial Steve. Years ago before euro nymphing became fashionable I used to catch winter grayling on deep fished weighted shrimps just using an extended leader and a floating fly line, with about 2ft of fly line outside the tip ring. The droop in the line acted as my take indicator, as it twitched out straight I'd strike, usually to a twig or rock on the river bed, but now and again a grayling. Obviously using a french leader is much more effective and a great refinement of this method.👍

Just getting into Nymphing, but been a grayling and river fly fisherman 50 years on dales rivers. Your yellow mono line do have to boil for a few mins as read you have to get rid of memory. Any particular brand you would recommend. Great video for a Yorkshire man with deep pockets, Keep the coming.

nah, you don't need to 'boil in acidulated water' although I do! : ) It's sample line pal so not sure if it's out there yet but any coloured mono will do!

Hello, now I do have a question for you. I understand that with this set up you cast longer then with short line nymphing? If so are the rivers that you fish on populated with forest around them so you are away from the wind? The reason why I ask is that I fish on the Trysil River in Norway where the wind is a huge factor and fishing with a 0.30 mm or a 0.23mm line creates a windsail in the leader. That is the reason why I dont fish with the tapered long french leaders. What are the situations where you fish these leaders with and how big are your nymphs? I guess you would need a tapered leader to transport small nymphs right there where you want to?

yeah big wind are no good, I'll often drop down to 0.16 in a big wind, it's very hard to nymph at range in a big wind, dry dropper, big dry, or streamer

Hi Steve! Recently taken to trying euro nymph style of fishing but I’m not tying flies as of yet & really finding it tough to find ones that have the varying weight beads? I’ve searched online but mostly American stuff I find. Any sellers in Scotland that you know of?
