This is "my" stretch of the Mother Road. I know I've been a little long-winded in my comments, and I want to thank you for your indulgence. You and your viewers are tourists on this journey, and I enjoy sharing my experiences on the road as one of the many colorful locals you will meet all along the way, and hope it makes the trip even more fun. I lived in Oatman, cooking and gunfighting my way through the 90s, and Seligman, the original Radiator Springs for 5 years...before the whole "Cars" thing got going. I was also a tour guide at the Grand Canyon Caverns, a VERY cool stop! It's too bad you got to Oatman too late to enjoy some of the locals that know how to use indoor plumbing, and can speak! LOL! I know it's a long road, and you can't see everything, so, it looks like you'll just have to do what Forrest Gump did...just turn around and start back to Chicago, so you can show us everything!
JD hits his head, Again So glad you stopped in Oatman. I married my wife in Oatman. We were married by a Gunslinger and Walter, the unofficial Mayor of Oatman, was our wingbearer. Walter is a Donkey taken in by a local couple there in Oatman. Thanks for stopping by that town
The fact that you can quickly reference by memory the Washington Monument to the depth of the crater is impressive and speaks to the amount of knowledge you have. Love your videos man.
I have been to Winslow many times as I had an uncle and aunt with two cousins, who lived there. The uncle was Fire chief in Winslow for a number of years. My cousin’s husband was the Mayor in the 1990s. I have stood there on the corner. Thanks for the travel.
Love the Rt66 series. Going to miss watching your adventures. Can't wait to see what you have going on next. Again thanks for taking us along for the ride.
Wow...what fun... I was born and raised in Holbrook during the 50's and 60's, when Route 66 ran through the town...lots of motels, restaurants and curio shops...it is almost a ghost town now compared to back in the day. I wrote a book, "Stories the Canyon Keeps", about my family's contributions to the Grand Canyon beginning in 1883. It won "Best of the West 2019", from True West Magazine. Sure hope you took time to stop by the Canyon ...it is gob-smacking! I enjoy all of your episodes...as I say in my book..."Curiosity is eternal"...😏
JD, your not alone. My wife would yell at me too if I went off the trodden path and explored the Apache cave, but would be so worth it. Thanks for sharing. Look forward to your next venture.
Great video!! Shoemaker is the same guy from Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, which crashed into Jupiter rather spectacularly. (Look it up, it was amazing.) If you ever get to Las Cruces, check out the space museum there. You’ll probably be amazed at all the stuff that happened there (and still does.)
So glad you turned around in the cave 😊 I was worried you might take a wrong turn and get lost! 😮😅 These videos are thrilling. Could watch and listen to you all day!
We are taking this very same trip next month so it was great to see this video. Your daughter is lovely! Glad to see you instilling the love of travel and history in your family. My parent did that for us and it was the greatest gift
Well, we have finally had a bump on JDs noggin! 🤕I also have crater envy! One of the places I would love to see one day. Really enjoying this series. Wish I was an American sometimes. What a diverse country for views and beautiful natural places. ❤️🇬🇧
You could've ended that at the beginning with "if you don't know what I'm referring to then you should 'take it easy'" 😂 Love the videos JD. Can't wait to run into you again in Gettysburg in the future.
This video is probably my favorite so far. Really interesting and entertaining, the wife and I have to do this! I'm almost 65 and she said that she absolutely knows that I would be right on your heels in that cave. She said that if the fall didn't kill me ..... She would!!
Thanks for the last few episodes! As a student I worked in the States in the summer of 1988 and spend 6 weeks Greyhounding around the country. I spent a week around Flagstaff seeing meteor crater and the petrified forest amongst other things. I think they have greatly improved the meteor crater visitor centre since my visit! Thanks also for confirming that I was not dreaming when I went thru the town of Adrian. My name :) I had not realised it was the route 66 halfway point.
I just realized you passed Houck, AZ and Ft. Courage, home of F Troop, without stopping in, such an iconic place on 66. I looked it up on Google Earth and noticed it's being left to rot away.
Thanks for sharing the family vacation. I took that trip in 03 with a GF we only made it to Flagstaff. God bless and enjoy. If you haven't been to the grand canyon take the time.
There is a little video game in the meteor crater museum that my son loved. You try out different sized meteors and angles and find out what kind of impact they have.
For some reason, Oatman, AZ feels like the primary inspiration for the little town in the movie "Cars". It may not be, but being so far off the main drag and with so little traffic it certainly has that same vibe. Thanks for sharing! Amazing journey thus far and I look forward to the conclusion!
I couldn't believe the noise I was hearing when you were going thru the cave and it was getting smaller and smaller...then I realized it was me hyperventilating!! 😂
Oh no! JD compared his daughter to a donkey! What ever shall we do? I know, let’s all band together, go down to the local rent-a-center, and see if they have a sense of humor for the less fortunate.
Such an interesting video. I love seeing all these historic areas. I love seeing the old fuel stations. Such a special era. Now the cave you went in looked rather dangerous. Your wife should have been mad. Thanks much for sharing.😊
Fantastic! I lived in Arizona from ‘72 to ‘80 as a youngster and my mom, stepdad and I must’ve covered the whole state when we were there. I remember being in such awe when I visited the crater. Traveling Route 66 is definitely on my bucket list!
Very cool, Thank you for your videos in general but this series is really cool. Route 66 is such a unique and fun time capsule of America and it really materialized through your videos.
This series keeps giving me mixed feelings. I love remembering some of the cools spots we have enjoyed like Winslow--one of the nearby stores was pumping out some good Eagles while we were there, so I stood and sang on the corner, but man I wish we would have had time to hit Oatman... Keep traveling my man--maybe "take it to the limit" as you "take it easy".
Two things that for sure have to be on the History Underground bingo card are: JD bangs his head Jd says “…well…” 😂 You’ll be in my neck of the woods soon. Can’t wait to see where you stop.
The only things I love more than this channel are donkeys (and my goatie goats!) Have a great school year! Time to go collect that medical insurance for your weekly concussions. 🤪
Great video thanks for taking us along for the tour. I also want to express my admiration for your courage in meeting your trolls face-to-face in Oatman. Not many You-Tubers would do that, much less let their daughter make friends with one. Well done. hope they slow down with the comments for awhile.
Never thought of following this route, but this series so interesting. I find it extremely cool you are sharing with your bride and daughter! Have not noticed if they have accompanied you on your European treks.
Just when you said "I will try and not bump my head in here," you go and bump your head in there! Why did you go and jinx yourself like that JD?! We're probably will start calling you "bumpy!"😅😂
About the Apache Death Cave...When the legend's more interesting than the true story...well... you can draw a lot more tourists with an "Apache Death Cave" than "Nice Cool Trench in the Ground". We enjoy traveling with you.
JD the Winslow AZ. Was great and the Crater was very good. The So called Apache.Death cave sounds more like a fable. No room for horses. But, that happened a lot in late 40’s and 50’s to draw you people to stop. At put it f the way places. Thanks for continuing your trip down Route 66 . The wild donkeys. Were cool. 💯👊👍💕
JD, I've been thoroughly enjoying your trip on the Mother Road. I'm a bit sad that it's coming to a close. An interesting place just north of Two Guns is Canyon Diablo. When I googled the area, I learned that Billy the Kid had a hideout there.
Nuther awesome video JD, but you gotta be the DJ here and start putting some links or something for the background music. Seriously!! I'm always trying to broaden my archives also.
