- Roof wall flashing kick-outs are a must! If you have a wall similar to this and you are doing your roof, be sure to add a kick out at the bottom if it does not have one. If your wall flashing does not have a kick out, water could get behind it causing rot mold or mildew. This is almost ALWAYS overlooked.. almost every reside I do I have to install a kick out. Most people I've met in the business don't even know what it is 😑
I agree, have with with a few companies where even the boss didnt do it. Had to explain to him why it's needed. On most re roofs yeah you kind of have to makeshift getting it in there especially houses that don't have vinyl siding. But as long as it diverts the water away from the wall a few inches it fixes that problem
yep, if you lucky they at least do the flashing right and they siliconed to where it isn't able to run anywhere but gutter

This is the exact tutorial I have been looking for. I have the same problem, not quite that bad. There was an attempt of a kick out with the bendy flashing but still overshoots. I didn't want to put a splash guard up as I was concerned as the water runs fast it may push the water over the fascia and under the eaves. So thank you I learnt what a kick out was today!
This is exactly what i was commenting on on one of your last videos. You can shingle a roof perfectly, miss one little flashing detail and end up with disastrous results.

Oh and I left a comment/question on one of your other vids but just in case you miss it there I'll ask on this video also. I have yet another roofing company trying to get over on me...yea. But anyway, I'm under the impression that my Owens Corning starter shingles should be nailed 5 nails per strip about 3 inches from fascia into decking. These guys are saying they're gonna stick over time but as of now I can lift both starter strip and shingles high enough to see my underlayment and seems like they nailed em a foot or so from fascia into decking. I personally don't even see the point of having starter strip installed that way bc wind will catch it eventually and blow em off. So whatcha think? Tell em to redo it or what's your advice? Tnx in advance bro.

Yeah I come across this situation a lot. A multi tool and a $3 section of welded step down diverter flashing, takes about 30/45 minutes to install. And will cure or prevent a multitude of issues. Plus it just looks good.
Thanks for your videos! You are good at addressing the issues as well as the solutions needed for a proper fix. I’m not a roofer by trade, but need to address issues that are the result of an old roof or improperly installed roofs or flashing.
I usually just make my own. First day at the job I look around and count how many I need, then at break time while I'm just sitting there, I grab a few step flashings and my hand benders and make pocket folds on on so many pieces. We typically use the thicker step so it's a bit more time consuming than the thin stuff as folding it actually takes a bit and I haven't done it enough times to be quick at making them. Just sometimes have to adjust it according to the siding material the house uses, with vinly its easier because you can trim it with your snips but when it gets to stucco and such you kinda just have to rig it in. Rather then spending too much time on making it perfect when it's just there to divert water a few inches out

Just had a new roof put on. I have 3 areas that need a kickout which wasn't done. The 1st is against wood siding very much like this video. It is rotting before the new roof put on but they didn't say anything. The 2nd is also against wood siding, doesn't look like a problem yet. The 3rd is where an addition meets vinyls siding on the 2nd floor and it's a new leak. Even though the addition has an overhang, water is dropping down the siding will behind the gutter.
Hi There just to let you know I watch your channel from Toronto and will be helping my son re shingle a small roof (10 x30 ft)over an addition that is a new kitchen in Ottawa. So my interest is step flashing. It was an addition so it looks like the contractor cut back the aluminum siding about 3 inches just looking at pictures so far and put a j molding on the bottom so now I am wondering about a kick out. I presume there is step flashing under neath covered by an apron flashing. I will be going the check it out. I really like your videos especially the 5 part how to re flash a chimney. I like that you show the problems but wish you would show the fix every so often. In this video you showed the problem but not the detailed fix, that then assists me in getting my head around my potential issues. Thanks again
Here in Central Texas this is very common to see. Can't say I understand how this detail gets overlooked. One can runa business correcting rotten walls and fireplaces around here. We refer to it as dead in the wall
I know what a kick-out is. Otherwise, how would I have found the video? I had to know what to search for to even find the video. Why does nobody actually show how to install it?
Whoever did that really did cost the home owner in the long run. Thats a lot of damage.
I get a sinking feeling in my stomach when I see this kind of damage to a house; especially when it could've been avoided so easily.
Oh my. Everything I see in this is a complete mess. Paint, caulking, siding, trim, gutters, etc. Hope they have a deep checkbook to fix everything.
