Directional derivatives and Gradient of a scalar function | video in HINDI | EduPoint

  • In this Physics video lecture in Hindi we talked about directional derivative and gradient of a scalar function. Gradient of a scalar field is a vector function. Gradient of a scalar function gives us the direction in which the rate of change of the value (or, more technically speaking, the slope ) of that scalar function is maximum. Directional derivative of a scalar field tells us the rate of change in the value of the function in a certain direction. To understand the physical meaning of "gradient" I give you an example - Suppose you are climbing a hill, which (the hill ) can be expressed as the function of coordinate values. You are at a certain point. You move in different directions and your assent is different. The direction in which you should move (technically correct? no.) for which you assent is maximum gives you the direction of the gradient of the function (the mathematical expression of the hill) at that point, which you are on. To understand the meaning of gradient at first you have to understand the meaning of directional derivative and for that you should know the meaning of ordinary derivative, which I think you are familiar with very well. Whatsoever we discussed a little bit about ordinary derivative also in this video lecture.
In this series of video tutorials in Hindi we are going to cover very important topics on "Mathematical methods in Physics" like, Gradient of a scalar field, divergence of a vector field, curl of a vector field and so on.
This is an indispensable topic in B.Sc. and it is the foundation of most of the branches in Physics.

You have that awesome talent to make a layman like me to understand something quite complicated otherwise. My humble request is to take up topics hard to understand such as quantum mechanics and general theory of relativity as your future goal. I
know you are one helluva of a person who can do it and believe me this endeavour óf yours will bring heavenly satisfaction to you in its wake as well. I know you know more than you teach....and thank you.

      Hello Rajat Ji,
Thank you for your encouraging words.
I have been trying to understand Q.M. for last few months. But, frankly speaking, I am not reaching the minimum level a teacher should have. And you are absolutely correct that Q.M. and G.R. will give a physics student or teacher the ultimate fulfilment.
I am trying. From the bottom of my heart, I am saying that I am trying.
