I started thinking the reason MK glitches in and out of monkey form is because of his premature awakening. Technically he is supposed to look like a monkey but since Nine awakened him too early, it might have affected his development which caused him to be born with the appearance of a human only…
me personally i dont fully consider MK’s sacrifice as JUST a heroic sacrifice, i consider it a full on suicide attempt due to the way MK was insisting that it had to be HIM as opposed to wukong. he thought his friends would be better off without him around specifically even when wukong has intentionally done worse in his lifetime and tried to get to the pillar first. and even if he was still technically conscious and alive inside the the pillar, he was dead. thats what everyone assumed, at least, since they thought there would be no coming back for him. wukong thought he failed his own successor and pigsy thought he failed his own son. MK has such severe trauma (i swear we’re reaching STEVEN UNIVERSE levels of it) i’m not surprised i’m reading into it as a suicide attempt not only to save the world but to prevent himself from causing any more “mistakes” in the future. and even in season four he was self isolating at the end of the brotherhood and in roast of the monkie kids and literally venting to that one little monkey about how if he stayed out of the way he couldnt hurt anyone he cared about and just didnt care anymore that macaque was antagonizing him because he was so exhausted. get this boy some therapy, in season six i genuinely need to see him go to a therapist like PLEASE
@@Akitsunesceilingfan Someone's entering their villain arc 💀 Jokes aside,no matter how much they increased the stakes, sure do hope it doesn't reach Spidey level of ridiculously horrible life cause that's lazy writing
While he def has trauma, he was so insistent that it had be him because he was the Harbinger in the prophecy and the only one who could mend the pillar
I personally loved Xiangliu as an antagonist. His dialogue has a really cool implication in the “we were enemies and also friends but you don’t remember” thing. It implies he remembers past cycles, and this also implies that the many different versions of the legends are different cycles
Mackaque definitely wins the MVP side character medal this season. He’s going above and beyond to keep our heroes alive and rational. *The fact that he’s the most emotionally healthy of the group now is wild.*
This is crazy right! Macaque was the one who was the most sane throughout the whole chaos of Season 5, and was the voice of reason a lot. No wonder I respect him even more now since post-LBD.
@@musingsofahomeschooler5332 I mean in the S4 flashbacks scene,he's also the sanest out of everyone.I'm guessing after joining the good guys' side and seeing that Wukong isn't screwing around about being a better person,he basically dropped the blind rage revenge thing and goes back to his normal self 🤔 That's just my theory tho
I keep forgetting all the time that this is a kids show. It has such mature topics, the characters are so well written and some scenes are literally terrifying. Like the possesion of the little girl, the scene where the guy who helped spider queen gets turned into a spider or the scene where spider queen is literally killed. Also the fact that they talk about macaque's death so openly, without covering it up under a ton of subtext like a lot of cartoons do with death. And all that in a 7+ show. Wow
We all miss Flying Bark. But my bigger beef with LEGO is that they refuse to market their LMK toys and show out west for better profits. This series deserves respect and needs to be addressed more
Right! Like, i get that western countries aren't the target audience, but it's still a beloved show for a lot of people over here! Even just a few merch items or a Lego set or two would be wonderful :)
Not only that. Most people in Western countrys don't even watch the Episodes legaly, because it's so Hard to Do that. Lego doesn't know that there are Fans all around the World outside of Asia because a lot of them watch them on Google drive or reuploads on TH-cam. Lego is missing so much Money and they have no idea
Why? People keep hiping this show like the next last airbender, but even from what little seen, can tell not even close, even the worst anime pretender from the early 00's was better, from the uneven character development amd focus, fights that have more flash than substance, and prioritising nodding towards the mythology rather than tell the story, let alone doing that well. Not the best work from Lego, wildrbrain even flying bark! Try concince moi, maybe you actually can!
I agree that LEGO has seemingly ignored its Monkie Kid fans in the West. I have to use TH-cam to watch seasons 3-5 and now season one thanks to Prime Video removing it. 😤
Really? Because after everyone kept hyping this show, and kept checking for myself, still not see what all that hype was about. Overly simplistic plot, hand holding writing, flashy and substanceless action, uneven writing that often hangs characters out for drying(mei),gets painfully self referencial, more concerned with cramming references from the source material rather than telling the story let alone doing that well. This show was not the Best from Lego,WildBrain even from Flying Bark! This show just another watered down last airbender clone!
@@yaziriscool. Sources? Not like flying bark are famous for mutch beyond spectacle these days, and their older work have more substance despite the rough appearence! Know how personally known about the demon bull king and princess iron fan before? Master raindrop! Even the fighting style, because villain uses tiger style while heroes are dragons, the five element system like traditional chinese mythology, and three out five elements have asian names like shao yen, jinn hoo and ne vah. With some brief japanese culture like one baku and one wish granting daruma doll!
While it is bold of Wukong to want to (spoilers) take the heroic suicide for his apprentice given his previous fear of death, make no mistake, it comes from his selfishness. In many ways it’s easier to be the one who dies than the one who mourns. Wukong would rather die and escape the consequences of his bold actions than have to live without the kid who believes in him so much. He understands better than any of MK’s human friends what it’s like to lose your loved ones, and seeing him fight so hard to stop that outcome shows how much he was scarred by loss in the past. In the end I truly admire the show for portraying a much better theme; that everyone’s life is worth saving and that a mortal sacrifice is not the answer
As someone who’s been fighting anxiety for years now, the meditation episode was a blessing that I am truly grateful for. This series gave me something that a therapist never could, a brilliantly colorful and emotional image to refer back to. I truly admire the show for portraying the incarnations of fear and self hatred as legitimately powerful and threatening, because that’s how they are in reality. The victory is all the more earned and inspiring in both seasons because of how many good points the fear made along the way
YES! I started to cry during that episode because of how personally it spoke to me. The episode tackled those issues so well, and had such a good message at the end.
Honestly, just in general, every single LEGO Original IP has been pumping out great seasons this year. Monkie Kid was practically perfect, although I do wish that we got a special in order for the pagoda storyline to shine more, Dragons Rising is being consistently good, Friends has honestly been on fire with it's amazing character arcs and stories, and even Dreamzzz has improved a lot. I just hope they are able too maintain this quality beyond this year.
i haven’t heard anyone else talk about the metaphors for self harm and the related s word, but that was my immediate interpretation as well. mk believes things would be better if he was gone and he also looks at the aftermath as narrowly avoiding making a terrible and irriversable mistake (this showing the most imo when he gets hugged by everyone and he says “i’m sorry, i messed up, i messed everything up” or in the last lines of the season between him and wukong). it hit particularly hard for me because i’ve struggled with passive ideation and depression for a long time and i recently lost a friend to it. lego covering something as heavy as that is so so commendable, especially when they do it so well.
I have to admit like many others I was blindsided by the animation change, but after giving the season a watch I can say the writing team is still at their peak and they have such great ideas for MK as a character. Mei still needs a better arc tho sheesh
It’s funny how they addressed it but also didn’t address the other characters story arcs in this season Granted, we now have even more to look forward too so hopefully they can use the time now that the main plot points have been laid
Coincidentally catching up with Monkie Kid JUST as this season released was one of my best decisions this year. MK's continual trials and tribuations surrounding his purpose, destiny and reason for being is so powerful - and Nine Headed Demon was a superb antagonist since he truly does not want to force MK's hand in either direction. He values freedom and chaos above all else, he wants *MK* to decide, not anyone else. I adore MK's conclusion that "this pain is ours" and that everyone ought to have the choice to help protect the world rather than it being a burden put onto a single person. Also I feel like the side-cast this season was balanced incredibly well. Mei, Pigsy, Sandy, Wukong and Macaque all got incredible amounts of attention too. All of your videos on LMK have been incredible, and I cannot wait for Season 6 and your EP!
I really enjoyed this season. Yes, I miss the animation, but the story was so good. I got teary eyed so many times. One of the things, I loved was how they dove into more of Pigsy and his role of being MK's dad.
I hope in s6,show addresses suicidal tendencies, with how Wukong worded things he not needed in the world anymore, with how word things,it almost sound like suicide latter, and with suicidal tendencies of mk,i want mk to go though more of healing journey next season, addressing mk mental health and struggle with his family/friends helping along the way.
I liked season 5 but there was something that felt off (not the animation) I think my main issue is Nine, I feel like he appeared too late in the episodes and we didn't get to understand much about him, just to have a basic interpretation. I have my interpretation: I think Nine is to show us a form extremism on the idea of "choosing your own patch", just like Nuwa is the form of extremism of "following the only way", and in the end show us the two sides that MK feels he has to choose from. I have no idea who Nine actually is in the context of Chinese culture and the original book, but from the show, I think that he was someone who was in the same situation of MK once, he had to make a big decision for his world, he made it alone because he thinks it was only his decision (in fact makes MK's friends stay silence when they are in Nuwa temple) and he made the decision he was told by destiny. Like MK he felt like he had to just go along with destiny, which led to the destruction of his world and his biggest regret, which is why he did everything to make sure that MK knew that he could choose, and not only go along with everything. The fact is that I think the season showed very little of him, which makes me feel like my interpretation is just a theory and not something I saw in the show (which may be true). It's probably because it will come up in later seasons, Mac got that strange power that Nine had,and there are still unresolved things. But anyway, I loved the raw emotions of season 5, just like in the precedent seasons. It rare to see a show that deconstruct the archetype of the hero like this: MK feels so human and normal, he is over all an happy person with a big duty that he cannot fill up alone. In the last few years, maybe thanks to anime, I feel like that most protagonist are this strong heros, who face some form of tragedy and they cannot go foward without their family. MK's story superfically is the same, but it's written in completly different way. Since season 1, we feel dread constantly behind MK. Sometimes during all the show it didn't feel like MK was rising to the top, it felt like his own little world (family, friends and everyday life) was ending. Which we kinda get the climax of it in this season, where MK touches the bottom. Still, after everything, MK is still not ok, he cries in Wugong arms at the end of the season, things are fine (everyone is alive) but MK world is still in ruins, which is a lot to see from a show like this. MK is mourning at the end of season 5 and he is scared, change is the only constant in life and it's a hard thing to accept, and we usually learn about this because we loose something or someone, which is what we are seeing with MK
@@martemil1403 that was a well thought observation. I also feel uncomfortable with Nine’s “surprise twist villain” entrance. I’d rather it been 100 eyes since he seemed so obsessed with seeing into MK’s memory. It was like he knew about the whole Great Cycle as well and was trying to get MK to follow his destiny more than anything. As for Nine-Head, I think he should have been introduced differently in the show. In the Novel he was married into an evil dragon family and they stole a relic the Golden Ray Pagoda, and made a local kingdom rain blood and Buddhist monks got blamed for it. Wukong and his companions teamed up with Erlang Shen to stop them. The dragons were killed, but Nine head ran away after Shen’s dog ripped off one of his heads. The show could have continued this plot and have Nine Head seek revenge on Wukong and Shen for executing his family by trying to do the same thing to their loved ones.
@@bluebelt1235In my opinion, I actually kind of like Nine, motives are interesting, and there was some build up there was a traitor amongst the kings. However, if LMK were to build off of what had happened with the Wangsheng dragon family, whilst I don’t know if I remember this correctly or not, I remember reading somewhere that Nine’s wife was pregnant, which was the motive for the whole kingdom fiasco. Maybe Nine would blame Ne Zha for not doing anything too since Ne Zha’s the protector of children and young adults, even if unborn children weren’t included?
Funnily enough I completely forgot Nine existed after I was done watching the show, I think the writers intended to Segway him into a potential season 6 but yeah I agree he appeared way too fast and way too sudden. That being said, I think there is some potential for a unique character in what we know
@@antlivbr12As far as I remember, that pregnancy is just a creative liberty taken by 1980's JTTW.But if you grew up with it,I guess I can see why you would think that. I think that build-up is kinda a terrible example of misdirection tbh since we're only given clue that the problem comes from the underworld, more specifically from one of the kings.Which makes us focus on the underworld while it turns out that something completely different is happening. Because Ten Kings of Hell,Nine-Headed Demon and Xiangliu are supposed to be completely unconnected things.Nine-Headed Demon has that chapter in JTTW and Xiangliu is basically chinese Apophys except without the calamity. When they're combined together, new backstory is written about fighting Nüwa and a demon like him somehow joins the ranks of the Kings of Hell while a Devaraja doesn't know about it (Li Jing's "You're not one of the kings!")....well,let's just say it raises a lot of questions since all of that is revealed the last minute without explaining how he's a king at all (since there's no backstory out there about Zhuanlun Wang, compared to Yama/Yanluo Wang that has some lore & also exists out of Buddhism and other kings that has self-explanatory names. The fact that other kings also doesn't realise him scheming is also questionable). Making him a completely different thing then not having enough screentime to flesh it out is kinda...eh. So that scene of him laughing at the rooftop doesn't really add any build-up.It just seems like "Hey remember this guy from the last scene of S4 special?" Honestly, even if the animation continues to be as mid next season,I hope they can write something that isn't this rushed.
Loved this video! So agree. Honestly MK's arc is what it feels like so many shows WANT to do with their characters but can't or don't so I really like that LMK can. I so hope that Season 6 isn't the last and is able to explore what happens after. I really want too see Sandy be the one to guide him through it since he of all characters really gets it
as someone who was truly inspired by the Lifetime of Mistakes episode, seeing Wukong finally get some proper screentime and character focus in s5 was beautiful to witness.
I watched the show with Chinese dub first (not understanding a word) and the visuals did a great job at telling the story! On a storytelling level, the animation absolutely sold this season, and that’s what matters. Absolutely helps that the story was an amazing journey, had me enthralled all the way through, and to the present day too!
You know, as much as I loved this season, I can't help but imagine how great it could've been if it was given more time. This might sound biased but I firmly believe that if LMK had more time and the right length of episodes to flesh out the world and characters, this show could've reached ATLA levels of popularity and love, or at least somewhere close to it. I am not kidding, ATLA had such deep lessons and philosophies way ahead of their time with amazing animation and complex characters. Just imagine how great LMK could have been if it had more time to cook
LMK is so good and yes, S5 was amazing!!! Thank you for giving it some love! The last few episodes go so hard, and I love that we got a Sandy ep with MK a dream come true fr
Xianglu had me absolutely captivated with his every word. Perfectly clever and unstable. They actually managed to give him a relatable reason to want to destroy reality and that’s so impressive
The animation may not have been up to previous standard, but it thankfully isn't as bad as so many other shows. And this time, the voice acting especially stood out. Especially Sean Schemmel's. His cries of desperation were heartwrenching. The story is of course moving forward amazingly. The incorporation of actual chracters from Chinese mythology without downplaying or changing their roles from their Mythological counterparts makes it wven better. (Twilight of the Gods could have learned from this show) The only issue i have with this show is that it could have benefitted with a longer run time
I love the way you analyse everything, it always make sense on a certain thing like the actions that the character did and why. I would love to see Wukongs character analysis bc i really enjoyed Macaques character analysis and certainly S1+S2 video. Thank you for doing those kind of videos, it really helps to understand characters more deeper than u initially can when u first watch it!
And on top of all that you discussed in this video, the show still managed to plant a bunch of great building blocks for the next potential season- ie whatever’s going to be revealed abt macaque and the chaos realm. Really love s5 of lmk, once you adjust to the animation change it’s a banger start to finish.
No notes! Algorithms boost!! More lmk! The show is literally the best show I've seen in years. I re-watch all of seasons 1-2 and the special. They are so underloved. Its almost painful to watch in hindsight because this was genuinely MK at his happiness. Also the Monkey form was foreshadowed as early as the Spider queen specal when hes in the furnace. Yes its a bit that has retrospective meaning but i also can't say that either. In the chinese fandom of Journey to the West nuwa's 5 stones are part of a fan theory that those are the stones of the 4 mystic monkeys. But the speculation never goes beyond "she had magic rocks that saved the world. Sun Wukong was born from a rock and almost saved china." (Bad news about delivering them scrolls safely) So i wouldn't be shocked if they start included other aspects of chinese mythology that weren't cameos in og Journey to the West. I still think they got a lot of options still in the book for other characters but the 4 guardian spirits and nuwa aren't in the book. So if anyone is stressed about lego running out of things to make toys out of. Not even a little. Plus im sure Black Myth Wukong coming out will help motivate more creativity. Id love for Erlang Shen to show up properly and not just in stills. Hes the only guy to beat up Sun Wukong and they kinda besties later. Plus hes got a dog. Mei loves puppies.
I was glad i was right about mk Arc about his monkey form, they're didn’t villainize mk emotions, and mk learned to accept that i was also right about mk rejected destiny, like he did in s3,nor is the monkey form evil or separated being,it just mk,it mk emotions. I am glad s5 didn’t make the monkey evil at all, unlike how the fandome treat it.
Seems like MK is mostly putting too much pressure on himself and taking too much responsibility. Obviously the Destiny stuff Nuwa was pushing was too extreme and too controlling, but MK shouldn't be blaming himself for everything. Heck, most of Wukong's mistakes were intentional screw-ups because of his own arrogance, but even he worked hard to make up for them. MK has made far fewer and was not alone in his endeavors. Plus, you could probably say at most he's a chaotic good. Sometimes the world needs to be shaken up.
This season isn't my favorite, but words cannot describe just how relieved I was after watching it. While the animation is downgraded (not saying it's bad, just downgraded), words cannot describe just how relieving it was that pretty much everything else was kept intact. I've always described Lego Monkie Kid as the writing of the first three Kung Fu Panda movies with the animation of Rise Of The TMNT. I'm happy Season 5 kept that up.
the fact that the Monkie Kid pilot was so unbelievably stupid and shallow and that the show is now a deeply dark and inspiring experience is hard to even believe. I love how both Monkie Kid and Ninjago are able to be more than toy marketing and deliver genuine stories and themes
Beautiful series. Very well done. While watching it, I felt like I was experiencing it, but "the telltale sign of a good story, that you resonate with it so personaly", right? Thanks for this Epizode.
I think WildBrain will improve on the animation. However, don’t think they’ll be on the same level as Flying Bark. Almost stopped watching after the animation change, glad I stuck around.
I love monkey kid. It's one of my favorite lego shows. I used to watch LEGO Ninjago, but then dropped off after I don't know exactly when, but like it just lost me after a while. It's not as interesting as it used to be, at least not to me.
I stopped watching Ninjago at the start of season 11. I had been noticing a drop in quality for awhile, but that was when I realized I had lost any interest. I’ve heard Dragons Rising is supposed to be good, so I may check that out sometime. Monkie Kid has always had my love. As much as I mourn the loss of Flying Bark, Season 5 showed me I can still enjoy this story and its characters.
while I still probably prefer season 4’s climax, probably because of Azure Lion, this season was so strong in all the right ways. Ever since season 4 you can really tell the plot beats and character arcs are well planned even between seasons. And im sure the new animation will get better with more practice and time
I feel like the animation was like this because they didn't have the time to fully learn the 2d animation, so i have the hope that the animation will be more like the old animation next season :)
I never understood why people care so much about the animation I mean if it’s like so awful I get it, but I just recently watched the show and I didn’t notice anything. I didn’t even know the animation changed in season five. As long as the story, the characters and the plot are good. I don’t care.
maybe this goes without saying but I really hope Lego actually releases this incredible soundtrack someday. Even if the visuals weren’t perfect the music was more than enough to keep me invested
I just finished watching the whole episode of season 5 Lego monkie kid and I'm in love with it and I'm still waiting for the 6th season release date and there's one thing that I really want to say is that who got macaque to make a deal with?
The first step to enlightenment is to define one's self, the second is to confront one's being, the third is to let go of attachment, the fourth is to accept the world around you, the fifth is to let go of both destiny and decision and the final step is to remove yourself from the cycle of reincarnation to see the world as yourself and yourself as the world...thus inhabiting a state of both peace and chaos.
Honestly it was a good idea to put some of the most unpolished animation in the early episodes and save the good frames for the finale. I also think a shorter season really allowed for a more focused story with less ill timed comedy
how crazy is it that we have a 21st century cartoon this good that doesn’t fall off in quality over time and isn’t packed with social justice agendas (and isn’t ninjago)
one of my favorite parts of season 5 is how it overalls wastes less of your time. The screen time is used more on intriguing or emotional character dynamics and less on cringe jokes
season 5 did feel a little more kiddy at least to me but the writing did make up for it a bit sense the writing was fast paced but overall it was decent
You know, the more I think about the season and especially the story…it all just seems different, like a season from another universe because compared to other seasons it’s just not it. The animation is alright, it’s just worse and definitely cheaper because it uses puppet animation from a studio known for only doing puppet or 3D animation. The thing that makes me absolutely HATE this season to the point I’m starting to act like it doesn’t exists…is that it’s just done wrong, I mean explaining the senses makes it sound good, heck even great. But the actual senses are so bad it’s just annoying, the season wasted episode 1 because it took so long to actually get to the enemy and what the season is about. I might explain it better in a post but another reason I hate the season is just the nine headed demon, the fact we knew only a little more then the cast made him kinda annoying, we didn’t know his character or his intentions so it has to be explained (poorly, might I add), we didn’t know how he looked AT ALL so we had to be hyped up in the WORST VILLAIN INTRODUCTION TO EVER EXIST, like he was so annoying and the “joke” about him being self-aware was the worst way to not only introduce a character but the MAIN VILLAIN, and also his story was rushed as hell which just says "hey! he will be nothing more then a plot Device for a while" but still wanting him to be important so nobody complains about him being the main villain. basically the animation is just cheap, the story falls apart once thought about properly, and the main villains are just plot devices and second thought. I hope to god season 6 actually feels normal and not rushed as fuck.
I think I agree with you,A LOT.Nine Headed Pest to me,feels like a perfect puzzle piece that fills in the gap in the plot's mystery while at the same time feels like pulled out of nowhere! Like yes, surely there's someone who is holding the strings, but does it have to be him? There is this LMK theory that I like a lot from R.V Sketch about LBD's connection to the Scrolls of Memory since both uses the Oracle Bone Script (no biggy,it's just one of the oldest proof of writing in the world) that has her theorising that the 5th king (Yamaraja/Yanluo Wang) is the traitor since he has history of being demoted because he cares too much about mortals (warning:oversimplification).Honestly, having the King of Turning Wheels of the 10th chamber (he's in charge of reincarnation,so I guess still connected to the theme of destiny & fate) be the traitor isn't too bad,but does it have to be Nine Heads? What exactly is his history here, compared to Yama or Judge Bao? (Basically, who put this guy here?) So I get your sentiment about "...we don't even know how he looked like." because I personally think it could be *anybody.* It could really be anybody since Nine Heads isn't even related to the Great Flood myth (I have a theory on this, not as wild as R.V Sketch's idea of Yamuna appearing in a JTTW spin-off,but it does sound like reaching in a historic way,and I'm not sure LMK will go that far) And even worse that all the Kings of Hell are killed so easily (why are these deities treated like they're the Green Lantern Corps in DCAU movies 😭 Like look at how the celestial army ran away from Camel Ridge's demon kings like they can't get Ju Ling Shen try to face them) so we don't get the chance to explore more about them. Even if we're ignoring that,it's weird how unclear it is why Nine Headed Pest,a mysterious demon (book spoiler: he did a crime, but Wukong,Bajie,Erlang Shen and the Meishan brothers let him escape to the seas, even book readers doesn't know how he ended up) with a history completely separate from Xiangliu (who came from the myth of the great flood),is claiming Xiangliu's name. They could've just made him a descendant like in the Mandarin dub,but NOOOO they have him claim the name even if we saw a serpent with 9 human faces outside of Zhu Ganglie's shop. And yeah...being meta can be LEGO's strenght, but sometimes it can be annoying. And yeah,so is the way they presented Nine Heads here. It's weird the way that he's important but at the same time feels like shoving himself into places he shouldn't be.He fits but he feels like he's sticking up like a sore thumb at the same time 🤨 So I'm also a Star Wars fan,and recently they have this new series called "The Acolyte".I thought the idea is interesting, until I saw the reviews (yea,I made sure to avoid the rage bait videos, and take the opinion of a guy that is actually passionate about film analysing).Turns out it can't even get basic morality right since it doesn't set up things properly (it doesn't even address why some characters are supposed to be seen as good or otherwise). As someone who kinda pay attention to SWKOTOR lore,it feels like a failed attempt to replicate SWKOTOR lore. I'm kinda scared LMK will fall into this mistake.Cause morally grey characters can make great stories but the way some basic stuff in LMK aren't even addressed yet, makes me worry about the whole LMK universe falling apart. And they even kinda gave up on the world building after season 2.We don't even know who Pigsy,Mr.Tang and Sandy are (if they screwed up this part & didn't even try to utilise the 10th king I'm gonna be really mad). And I'm very worried about Nine Heads,Wukong, and Macaque's characters that has a lot ahead of them and has to be handled with tact. And lemme tell you something: The problems you're worried about has been there since the beginning.I mainly trust the writers to reveal things, with how they eventually revealed how MK came to be.But bro...the way they write the story is disappointing.I have a feeling that if there weren't any conundrum about being forced by LEGO to pump out the new season so they can sell more LEGO sets, this wouldn't happen.I feel like there's a genuinely good story, but very unfinished because of the pressure from the company.I'm just saying, that no matter how complex, dark or morally grey you plan your story to be,if it doesn't have proper structure or even logical atleast,it'd fall apart. Sorry for the really long rambling lol,I know the various references are really random 😅 Edit: Edited out an innacuracy, but my argument about Nine Heads placed as the answer is the same. So,in conclusion, what makes his 'meta' & 'self-aware' attitude & reveal so cheap is the lack of his history in mythology. But to show *why* exactly is this thing (currently) looks lazy and pulled out of nowhere,is the lack of foreshadowing when we compare it to previous seasons. Look at LBD.She's mainly in season 3,yet her appearance has been set up since season 1's finale. What she is & what she's capable of is teased throughout season 2. Or look at Samadhi fire that has been teased since season 2's "Dumpling Destruction" by referencing Guan Yin's help to extinguish Samadhi fire (Red Son's fire-tipped spear was also used by MK and he broke it). Also,Red Son as a character was already put in the show as the son of the character who is most often emphasised as Wukong's sworn brother (like how in 90s JTTW both him & PIF likes to hang out together). If we're willing to go that far, even the fight against DBK was used as an intro to the show & paint a picture about how Monkey King is seen by this world's people before he was resurrected in the modern world. Compare this to the lack of *ANY REFERENCE* that has anything to do with The Myth of The Great Flood or the chapters where Nine Heads appeared. No reference to Kingdom of Sacrifice/Jisai,no mention of Wansheng dragon family, nothing about the chaos beyond or the chinese myth of creation, nothing about the warring states period that takes place before the Tang dynasty (because JTTW is a Ming period novel (that's why Wukong wears that kinda armor) that takes place in the Tang dynasty period, hence the kind of Hanfu Mei wore in that Calabash episode & the ladies in that pregnancy water scene...). I don't think Azure Lion has that kind of foreshadowing, but he's still somewhat acceptable since him being a lion spirit can be merged with one of Wukong's old sworn brothers and his book backstory is still connected to the deities (albeit not a daoist one,but to Bodhisattva Manjusri). The creative liberty taken here still makes sense. What about Spider Queen? Well, the thing about her is that compared to the other demon villains, she doesn't exactly get an upgrade other than the tech that she acquired. She stays an ordinary villain...a saturday morning cartoon villain, even. She doesn't have any connection with Wukong like DBK,PIF, and Liu'er,no frightening might like three demon kings of Camel Ridge (I'm serious about the frightening part, cause I get reminded of Mick Gordon's Super Gore Nest while reading a poem about their cave),or managed to break the characters like Baigujing/LBD.And with the nature of the spider sisters' story (I even heard someone saying that it was inspired by Xuanzhang passing through a village of prostitutes, idk if it's true, but from how the story is,I'm going to take their word for it),I'm not surprised about how vague Spider Queen's connection is to the spider demon sisters in the book. It's no surprise she's not a big deal with whatever the writers do with her character.
@@claudius3359 OH MY SMITH! YOU JUST MADE ME REALISE HOW STUPID HIM BEING ONE OF THE TEN KINGS IS! How did they not realise he was from chaos!? How did he end up there!? Was he one of the original kings!? If not, how did they not notice!? They could’ve at least explained the whole king thing! Also I only recently found out he is named after a character already shown, it’s kinda stupid the more I think about it. Also they keep none of his story from JTTW! I mean I know other characters only take little from their original story but at least they get SOMETHING! And it’s not like his character is SOOOO great they had to overhaul his character from JTTW, his character is annoying and just as much of a plot devise as Li Jing (don’t even get me STARTED on Li Jing) but it’s even more annoying when his character from JTTW is actually cool! Also I hate the difference between his show design and mini-figure, it’s such a big jump and not even a good one! His show design is kinda basic compared to his mini-figure which has a sort of cutesy but interesting design that makes him LOOK LIKE A SNAKE! Anyways, thanks for giving me your opinion, it’s nice seeing others with similar but different opinions 🥰
@@Little_snow_tiger Yeah exactly! Li Jing's line about "You're not one of the kings!" makes me question lots of stuff.Like I even made a joke about how the Shiwang needing a new uniform cause this lame Sith-looking getup got them infiltrated. No seriously, how did the celestial bureaucracy messed this up? I get that JTTW is kinda mocking the Ming government, but this is a whole other case of mismanagement. The fact that Ksitigarbha's Diting (where the doggo?) isn't here is...way too convenient.Everything about the underworld's problems are so convenient it's comical. And I really think that they did Nezha & Li Jing so wrong.Like these guys' family has a whole section in both Fengshen Yanyi & JTTW,that they could've gave them a lot more spotlight than just be...whatever they are in season 5 (Nezha's lame mech design doesn't help at all in this case. It's like a bad gundam rip-off,and that's an insult to Gundam) I remember people being hyped up for the Li family because of that arc with the mouse lady demon being adopted to their family only for the season to set them aside. There's even this comment that says they could've paralleled MK's sacrifice to Nezha's suicide back then and also MK & Pigsy's relationship with Li Jing & Nezha.I also personally think that there should've been an in-depth arc about Devaraja Li Jing learning to trust his growing son (since Nezha is far from the impulsive dragon-slaying child he was,we've seen how he treats his duty guarding the Jade Emperor) to parallel with the theme of control (Li Jing restraining Wukong,Nine Heads wanting to be free from Nüwa).Li Jing could've been a much more interesting antagonist, despite not being the main villain. Yeahh,I think the design is a fusion of the 80s adaptation (princely, kinda normal-looking,long hair with a top knot, punchable smug face and royalty looking robes) and that Li Yunzhong illustration (monstrous, armor with surcoat revealing the right side and belt, crown, snake elements),with the minifigure leaning to the latter.I personally think they should've made 2 minifigures for him,or atleast 2 expressions or something.
@@claudius3359 OH MY SMITH YEEEES! Also one thing I’ve been thinking about since the first trailer: why is Li Jing the new jade emperor when Erlang Sheen is literally the nephew OF THE JADE EMPEROR! He needs to be in the show! I mean i know he also wasn’t in season 4 which was annoying but it was kinda expected because of all the characters but he isn’t even in season 5! He would’ve been a way better antagonist (or just the new jade emperor) then Li Jing, who DIDN’T EVEN USE THE JADE EMPERORS POWER MIGHT I ADD!
@@Little_snow_tiger Honestly I think this part kinda makes sense since from what I remember,Erlang Shen doesn't live in the Celestial Realm and he's not really fond of his uncle since he wronged his mom. He's the OG trasher of the celestial realm from what I heard. He also lives in the mortal realm like LMK Wukong, specifically by the mouth of a river that I forgot the name of 😅 That's why it took Guan Yin to summon him to face Wukong back then. But I agree that they could've mentioned more about trying to summon Erlang Shen or other celestial business cause I'm kinda concerned with the fact that we're getting too MK-centric.Y'know,like what I said about the world building. The show got more & more narrow with how we lost episodes that focuses on other characters like in season 1.Plus,I think it would be awesome to have some celestial court scenes when Wildbrain is still struggling to make good action scenes (it's gonna trigger some flashbacks for the fans of 2005 Lotus Lantern lol) so we don't always be kept in the dark like MK does.Speaking of being kept in the dark,I wish we have a Wukong-centric episode that can tell us his struggles & thoughts when he's not around MK.I think that can be a saving grace for LMK.Cause the one with a mask isn't just Macaque.I've seen someone pointing out that Wukong always tries to be more reserved around MK,keeping in his true feelings. My current theory tho,is with the theme of the season,Devaraja Li and a lot of others might not trust him.Maybe they don't consider him worthy (I mean, doesn't Wukong basically called him a bastard back then, and even laughed at him in the 80s series).I can see Erlang having a shaky relationship with Wukong, but idk about enemy since all that he does are basically 'what he can do to handle a problem even if he doesn't like celestial realm'.And I think Erlang Shen can also be used to help MK with his identity crisis, since he's half mortal half deity while MK is a celestial monkey who lived as a human & has both forms. I wonder if he can be summoned to fight MK though,if the story wasn't so fast-paced 🤔 Like would he come to handle the premature harbinger of chaos, would he stop if he actually knows what's going on?
The difference is that the animation looks a bit more stiff and less fluid than previous seasons, but that’s only because the new studio specializes in 3D animation, this is the first time they had done a full 2D show in this style before but honestly sometimes I forget the animation is different
No? Wildbrain specializes in 2D animation, they've already animated many shows in 2D. It's just that they probably didn't have enough time to fully animate the characters.
Mk is such a great character because, even with the monkey form, he's incredibly human. He's not a perfect protagonist, but that's what i like about him! You know?
Honestly the less perfect he is,the better.Lest he'd turn to an average OP perfect anime protagonist 🤷 Also, idk if it's just me,but I'm glad his monkey form isn't the typical 'evil side' of him.Like, even tho he sees it as a separate entity in his mind,he still reacts normally even before the meditation scene while in his monkey form.Proving that the S4 final battle was just him channeling his rage.
I wanna say this for y’all. This new animation studio is used to 3D ANIMATION! Not 2D. Let them get accustomed to it. Without them, we wouldn’t have at least 10 possible seasons coming up. Let them cook!
This definitely isn't my favorite season, but I really liked it. The animation isn't as good, but it's still well done. The voice acting is great, and that ending was so powerful. I do hope that season 6 is the finale, though. If the show goes on any longer, I think it'll stagnate. Besides, it seems this show is planned out in 3-season arcs. And Ninjago seasons 4 and 5 are the peak of Lego stories.
What I don’t like about this season is the main villain who revealed himself at the last second and never made his appearance until now. And the animation feels stale
It felt like stuff has started happening for more and more arbitrary reasons. My biggest problem is that how did mk do that thing at the end? How did he know that he could? It feels like the plot pulled a solution to an impossible problem out of nowhere
Hero factory, bionicle, clutch powers, chima, nexo knights. Why people keep acting like lego never had quality story telling before? Only reason ninjago still airs cause the West's hard for the East!
Bionicle is not all too well known in terms of story because it had no show. But Ninjago copied a lot of it for its first run til 2019 Hero Factory fell short a lot of times. Imo the show gets to shine more because of the action scenes. The actual story is kinda shallow most of the time. Most villains have a basic, sometimes even nonsensical origin story (looking at you, Nebula). Plotlines get picked up and dropped randomly (Furno and Rocka rivalry, villain factory, anti quaza, brain attack). Some characters just drop off, and others change personalities over time. No character development has any significance for subsequent stories.
@@Makutros. Didn't black phantom stealing the factory plans directly lead into brain attack? Those things are biological weapons that mutate anything they touch, and can make someone instant armies!

@@erikbihari3625 yeah that's right, I forgot. Still, the villain factory was already in the original concept of the theme. The brains don't really do it justice.

Will you ever gonna say something negative? Because the excessive adulation been keep hearing about this show keeps reaching into snapeism territory! Wich does not look good!
I started thinking the reason MK glitches in and out of monkey form is because of his premature awakening. Technically he is supposed to look like a monkey but since Nine awakened him too early, it might have affected his development which caused him to be born with the appearance of a human only…
hi wait i like this theory a lot?? i will be taking it :3
Baller theory, yoinking it
Probably
me personally i dont fully consider MK’s sacrifice as JUST a heroic sacrifice, i consider it a full on suicide attempt due to the way MK was insisting that it had to be HIM as opposed to wukong. he thought his friends would be better off without him around specifically even when wukong has intentionally done worse in his lifetime and tried to get to the pillar first. and even if he was still technically conscious and alive inside the the pillar, he was dead. thats what everyone assumed, at least, since they thought there would be no coming back for him. wukong thought he failed his own successor and pigsy thought he failed his own son.
Nah nah we need to see him get WORSE! Self-fulfilling prophecy type guy (is it self-fulfilling if an inkier version of you said it?)

Yeah, going to just miss Flying Bark
Even with the disappointing animation change, it’s amazing to see the writing hasn’t taken a hit and is still at its best
i agree

He's immortal tho he can't die
Wukong screaming was perfect
He put his heart and soul into that scream (aka he did more than anything he has done in DBZ)
@@hybridvenom9 I agree

That still doesn't diminish the quality of the performance.
I have to admit like many others I was blindsided by the animation change, but after giving the season a watch I can say the writing team is still at their peak and they have such great ideas for MK as a character.
Mei still needs a better arc tho sheesh
It’s funny how they addressed it but also didn’t address the other characters story arcs in this season
Granted, we now have even more to look forward too so hopefully they can use the time now that the main plot points have been laid
I feel kinda stupid for not even consciously registering the change until now
Coincidentally catching up with Monkie Kid JUST as this season released was one of my best decisions this year.
Calling back to the Lady Bone Demon in a storyline about defying destiny was a clever move
I liked season 5 but there was something that felt off (not the animation)
I think my main issue is Nine, I feel like he appeared too late in the episodes and we didn't get to understand much about him, just to have a basic interpretation.
That being said, I think there is some potential for a unique character in what we know
Well, we still have s6 so we'll see what goes on then
@@antlivbr12As far as I remember, that pregnancy is just a creative liberty taken by 1980's JTTW.But if you grew up with it,I guess I can see why you would think that.
So that scene of him laughing at the rooftop doesn't really add any build-up.It just seems like "Hey remember this guy from the last scene of S4 special?"
Honestly, even if the animation continues to be as mid next season,I hope they can write something that isn't this rushed.
Loved this video! So agree. Honestly MK's arc is what it feels like so many shows WANT to do with their characters but can't or don't so I really like that LMK can. I so hope that Season 6 isn't the last and is able to explore what happens after. I really want too see Sandy be the one to guide him through it since he of all characters really gets it
This series is still GOATED even with the different animation
as someone who was truly inspired by the Lifetime of Mistakes episode, seeing Wukong finally get some proper screentime and character focus in s5 was beautiful to witness.
Who knew a Lego series could be so deep?
Yeah, Lego Monkie Kid is able to show as much emotions and pain as it is to step on the lego block.
as much as I love season 4’s ending, this season does a lot better in avoiding pointless jokes in its final climactic episodes
I swear, Monkie Kid is the best thing to come out of Lego since Bionicle. This show did not have to go as hard as it did, but did just that.
LMK is so good and yes, S5 was amazing!!! Thank you for giving it some love! The last few episodes go so hard, and I love that we got a Sandy ep with MK a dream come true fr
stg if s5 was in flying bark it would be the best thing in television
(Twilight of the Gods could have learned from this show)
The only issue i have with this show is that it could have benefitted with a longer run time
I’d appreciate a S1+S2 video since a retrospective after how the show evolved would be interesting
Do you think in season six they’ll talk about how his friends felt about the whole situation that’s gonna be an emotional roller coaster in itself
This season is easily my second favorite
And on top of all that you discussed in this video, the show still managed to plant a bunch of great building blocks for the next potential season- ie whatever’s going to be revealed abt macaque and the chaos realm. Really love s5 of lmk, once you adjust to the animation change it’s a banger start to finish.
It is a testament to LBD of just how great of a baddie she was if, even now, she has such a stranglehold on our hero's mind 🤔
Sun Wukong was born from a rock and almost saved china." (Bad news about delivering them scrolls safely)
So i wouldn't be shocked if they start included other aspects of chinese mythology that weren't cameos in og Journey to the West.
All the lego show this year have been pretty cool
I was in so much fear of watching ss5, but I think I'm ready now after watching your vid TVT
Nice to know that you still think its great...i do too, even if everyone else thinks its bad
Props to you for not letting the net change your opinion
the fact that the Monkie Kid pilot was so unbelievably stupid and shallow and that the show is now a deeply dark and inspiring experience is hard to even believe. I love how both Monkie Kid and Ninjago are able to be more than toy marketing and deliver genuine stories and themes
Beautiful series. Very well done. While watching it, I felt like I was experiencing it,
but "the telltale sign of a good story, that you resonate with it so personaly", right?
Thanks for this Epizode.
I just wish LEGO at least tried to pretend like they cared about their shows. I'll miss you flying bark, i hope they put this show back on amazon❤
I think WildBrain will improve on the animation. However, don’t think they’ll be on the same level as Flying Bark. Almost stopped watching after the animation change, glad I stuck around.
I love monkey kid. It's one of my favorite lego shows. I used to watch LEGO Ninjago, but then dropped off after
I don't know exactly when, but like it just lost me after a while.
And im sure the new animation will get better with more practice and time
Thumbnail idea: put Destiny as text below MK so the image spells out DENY DESTINY, which I think fits the story of S5.
PLEASE make a deep dive video about Wukong ,my baby needs one!!😢😢(side note, love your videos ❤)
I feel like the animation was like this because they didn't have the time to fully learn the 2d animation, so i have the hope that the animation will be more like the old animation next season :)
Can we get a full analysis of "Nine"? We need more about him.
I just finished binge watching the intiarty of MK and this is one of the best animated shows of all time
SEASON 5 IS FINNALLY OUT
I never understood why people care so much about the animation I mean if it’s like so awful I get it, but I just recently watched the show and I didn’t notice anything. I didn’t even know the animation changed in season five. As long as the story, the characters and the plot are good. I don’t care.
exactly i barely noticed a difference
Hyped for the upcoming EP!!!
"you have no idea about whats comming"
I'll miss the hand-drawn animation
Personally i didnt event realize the bad animation too much, i think i was way more focused on the storytelling 😭😭
maybe this goes without saying but I really hope Lego actually releases this incredible soundtrack someday.
I loved this season, but I honestly just hope the next will have the same quality of writing.
When season 6 of Monkie kid comes out maybe it could bring out the spider man no way home effect
You should review Lego monkie kid
I just finished this yesterday so glad to see you cover it
It cant be I havent see a lmk video in such a long time
Why was there no special for this season?
Honestly it was a good idea to put some of the most unpolished animation in the early episodes and save the good frames for the finale. I also think a shorter season really allowed for a more focused story with less ill timed comedy
how crazy is it that we have a 21st century cartoon this good that doesn’t fall off in quality over time and isn’t packed with social justice agendas (and isn’t ninjago)
i really want to watch this but idk if i need a vpn cuase i live in sweden and i cant find it on happy kids and its blocked on prime
Imagine if there isn’t a season 6
one of my favorite parts of season 5 is how it overalls wastes less of your time. The screen time is used more on intriguing or emotional character dynamics and less on cringe jokes
Dissapointed with the animation change but In my opinion it had the perfect ending EVER if it ended on season 5!
"Stellar storyboarding"
Also the scene you showed: *Macaque bondage*
season 5 did feel a little more kiddy at least to me but the writing did make up for it a bit sense the writing was fast paced but overall it was decent
Got into this series because of Xiangliu / Nine-Headed Demon and now I'm in too deep.
(Basically, who put this guy here?)
So I get your sentiment about "...we don't even know how he looked like." because I personally think it could be *anybody.* It could really be anybody since Nine Heads isn't even related to the Great Flood myth (I have a theory on this, not as wild as R.V Sketch's idea of Yamuna appearing in a JTTW spin-off,but it does sound like reaching in a historic way,and I'm not sure LMK will go that far)
And even worse that all the Kings of Hell are killed so easily (why are these deities treated like they're the Green Lantern Corps in DCAU movies 😭 Like look at how the celestial army ran away from Camel Ridge's demon kings like they can't get Ju Ling Shen try to face them) so we don't get the chance to explore more about them.
It's weird the way that he's important but at the same time feels like shoving himself into places he shouldn't be.He fits but he feels like he's sticking up like a sore thumb at the same time 🤨
So I'm also a Star Wars fan,and recently they have this new series called "The Acolyte".I thought the idea is interesting, until I saw the reviews (yea,I made sure to avoid the rage bait videos, and take the opinion of a guy that is actually passionate about film analysing).Turns out it can't even get basic morality right since it doesn't set up things properly (it doesn't even address why some characters are supposed to be seen as good or otherwise).
Sorry for the really long rambling lol,I know the various references are really random 😅
Edit: Edited out an innacuracy, but my argument about Nine Heads placed as the answer is the same.
Am i the only one who cant see the animation change
I don't see so I will need some one to point it out
The difference is that the animation looks a bit more stiff and less fluid than previous seasons, but that’s only because the new studio specializes in 3D animation, this is the first time they had done a full 2D show in this style before but honestly sometimes I forget the animation is different
@@cyanado2697 now that I know I might be able to see that. Thanks for the info
No? Wildbrain specializes in 2D animation, they've already animated many shows in 2D. It's just that they probably didn't have enough time to fully animate the characters.
Cool but also what about a side character analysis?
Honestly this my second favorite show second to Ninjago
Mk is such a great character because, even with the monkey form, he's incredibly human. He's not a perfect protagonist, but that's what i like about him! You know?
Honestly the less perfect he is,the better.Lest he'd turn to an average OP perfect anime protagonist 🤷
Also, idk if it's just me,but I'm glad his monkey form isn't the typical 'evil side' of him.Like, even tho he sees it as a separate entity in his mind,he still reacts normally even before the meditation scene while in his monkey form.Proving that the S4 final battle was just him channeling his rage.
I’m just asking maybe give us more warning before cutting to the Sean Schemmel screaming-
HELP REAL I STARTED SOBBING 😜⁉️
I honestly don't mind it it's still looks great and slick just less prople are honestly overeacting about it i mean it's not bad
Hi Everyone I love this and I hope you have a good day and you are awesome
Honestly I didn't notice the animation changed.
Hey, does anyone have some info about season 6?
Sometimes, I forget that this is a kids show 😭
I wanna say this for y’all.
Where do I watch it
What I don’t like about this season is the main villain who revealed himself at the last second and never made his appearance until now. And the animation feels stale
I wish they didn’t ruin the animation 🫠
It felt like stuff has started happening for more and more arbitrary reasons.
My biggest problem is that how did mk do that thing at the end? How did he know that he could? It feels like the plot pulled a solution to an impossible problem out of nowhere
The way I see it is not that he knew it would work but more so everyone was going to die so he said fuck it
Hero factory, bionicle, clutch powers, chima, nexo knights. Why people keep acting like lego never had quality story telling before? Only reason ninjago still airs cause the West's hard for the East!
Bionicle is not all too well known in terms of story because it had no show. But Ninjago copied a lot of it for its first run til 2019
Hero Factory fell short a lot of times.
