Look at this beautiful.little house. They built them to last in those days! What a sturdy little building! Good thing there were people around who realized that ot could be a Landmark. We are losing our history as quickly as we are evolving! It's okay to appreciate the past, it really is!
I enjoyed a guided tour of Nantucket about 1993 and visited this house... The Coffins are in my family tree, so it was fun to see this house... i also climbed the inside of the Congregational Church for good views of the town... I was in my 40s, so easy to do that back then....
I am a descendant of Tristan Coffin and my generation, including me, was in the latest revision of the Coffin Book, which I purchased from NHS . There's a bunch of us!
I loved this video! As a descendant of Coffin, Macy, Starbucks, Gardener and several others, I’ve wanted to visit Nantucket to see my ancestral sites. I’m determined to go one day, but videos such as this are so very interesting!
I'm a descendant of 2 of Tristram Coffin's children, John Coffin and Stephen Coffin. I am also a descendant of Nathaniel Paddock, the second owner of the oldest house. The last names from the map that's not in my tree or at least, haven't discovered are Pike, Coleman, Bishop, Rolf, Mayhew, Greenleaf.
My 10th (?) Great Grandmother is Mary Coffin Starbuck. My daughter discovered this a few years ago. One day we will make the pilgrimage to Nantucket to pay our respects. This was a very informative video!
@@wynnmatthews1858 We were also. We had never heard of her until my daughter traced my dads mothers family tree. I think she may be my 9th but I will have to check with my daughter. What was cool was that my daughter discovered that there was a common ancestor on both my dads mothers side and my moms fathers side. We never knew that she had colonial roots.
This is incredible! I so appreciate all this, all the history, the people, the way life was. So wonderful, thank you so much for putting this here and telling us the history of this "Oldest House on Nantucket."
I am a decedent of Tristram Coffin sr. My mother's side of the family is Coffin with my father's side decended from Anthony Morse. He was an original founder of Newbury in 1635.
We enjoy Nantucket, and have docked there in the past. Our intention is to return in the summer of 2021 and I am looking forward to getting into the history of the island. We will make a point of getting to the Coffin House. Enjoyed watching this documentary. Thanks from Wisconsin.
My guess on the horseshoe shape on the chimney is that it was the family "mark" when branding livestock. Another guess would be that it was an advertisement for something to do with horses. They used ornaments incorporated onto the rooftops back in the 1500's in England to indicate so you could identify different trades and businesses, from a distance
This is well done, interesting. I've watched it multiple times as I like New England history. I'm from the maritimes in Canada, but a lot of our history is really New England history.
I just recently found out my family ones one of the first founding families. Coffin and Gardners. I did a DNA family. I'm so excited to learn about them!

Their daughter Anna Married Richard Worth 17th Generation had a Double connection with the to the Collin line, and the Marriage between Elizabeth Gardner and Stephen Gorham connecting the Coffin lines to the Mayflower Pilgrams.
I'm related to the Coffins, Folgers, Starbucks, and I believe Gardners. If you guys are interested in some really cool trivia, look up Moby Dick and the reason behind the story. Then follow up with how Starbucks coffee got its name. 😉
We found we are all related (even distantly) if we did research, we find we really do end up back with Adam and Eve. As we have found it very interesting how no matter where you go while researching ancestry you can find people you would never believe to be related to yourself!
@@JoyceB-qv9xq Do you realize that this is a silly question? We all go back to Adam and Eve and from the beginning of the time the Lord created Adam and then Eve. We all will end up going back to them. (where would you have come from if not?)

Very interesting tour of a lovely house. I would like to hear more about the birthing room such as why was an entire room dedicated for that purpose? Was it multi-purpose as well?
I love Nantucket! My dad and I visited in 1981 .Does the Johnson and Johnson family still occupy the large house above the cliffs of the Atlantic Ocean…that side was very rough winds and water! Are the cranberry bogs still producing cranberries?

Really interesting, I research Essex Villages Towns & Churches & post on TH-cam, if any folk have descendents come from Essex that would be fascinating to me. I in years back researched a Church in Essex where Lawrence Washington Preached, he was grandfather to George, when you go in the Church which is Norman, a few pictures of the Washingtons are behind the font, with a big stack of chairs & cobwebs, do typical of England, we're not very good at blowing our own trumpet, thanks for posting

I go there in October. My granddaughter was born there. I love it….but it has gotten out of control in the expenses. Too expensive for average people to live there. Foreigners are the only ones who can get jobs, financial aid, welfare, housing.
I don’t know about foreigners getting aid to live in Nantucket? The people a worked for that has a house there are millionaires. There is no way foreigners can live there and pay $600 to get their cars to the other side. These people a worked for has four cars. They leave one at the island all summer long. I know there are some Portuguese influence in the are, but very little. The rest of the population are white collar Americans. Not average people, but the very wealthy. Never being there though.
I am still struggling with Moby Dick. It's a hard book to read and fully comprehend. In the beginning of the book, Herman Melville describes Nantucket as being a lively little Port Town that was full of American History, already!
