How? If anything, this is a departure from the themes and components of his previous work. The instruments all attempt to feign "reality," which is the exact opposite of the spirit of his previous work--to transcend reality.
What? I completely disagree that the instruments used here are trying to "feign reality" as you put it. The main drums sound synthesized and unnatural. There is a one note synth sequence and a very artificial bass sequence at 2:47. The only things that sound realistic are the piano and the real drum samples in the buildup. If you're trying to argue that he's never mixed synths and real instruments before, listen to the whole Creation EP. Or the Worlds Apart EP. It's not a new thing.
I do like the bass sequence, and it is pretty great, but it is disappointingly simple in melody, not accompanied or complemented by anything (instead, it is shoehorned into festival/tour style rhythms and tropes, and this includes the vocal melody, disappointingly). The drop's primary synth is definitely emulating reality instead of transcending it; it is a simple piano with an uninspired twang attached. No, I am not saying that mixing synths and real instruments is INHERENTLY bad; his previous combinations of these things were meant to complete the entire experience and incorporate each instrument into the overall theme--which is contrary to this track's primary exercise. No, not "all of his old music" is perfect, either, and nothing he has created is "perfect" (damn near, eh?), but we must look at these things critically if we want to improve our own tastes and music overall. We cannot let the curse of the festival tour consume talent--the machine does not deserve humanity.
Eh, we all have opinions I guess. Personally I wish the drop had more elements to it. I also wish the vocal track wasn't so drowned out by the instrumentation. There's no distinct variation in dynamics, everything sounds very flat.
