Sergei Lyapunov - 12 Transcendental Etudes Op. 11 (LYAPUNOV'S 156TH BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE)

  • SIDE COMMENT: "417 pictures, around 3 days to make, more than 30 minutes to publish, took up more than 1 gig of disk space, 4 hours to upload, made it on time for the party, and I still got the performer's surname wrong; it should be Scherbakov. WHYYYYY? XD"
    Lyapunov is largely remembered for his Douze études d'exécution transcendente. This set completed the cycle of the 24 major and minor keys that Franz Liszt had started with his own Transcendental Études but had left unfinished. Not only was Lyapunov's set of études as a whole dedicated to the memory of Franz Liszt, but the final étude was specifically titled Élégie en memoire de Franz Liszt.

    Love the homages to Liszt's etudes. For example:
    No. 3: Harmonies du Soir 7:13
    No 6: Wilde Jagd (Just the beginning) and Transcendental Etude No. 10 (Also brings to mind Orage from Annees de Pelerinage) 24:55
    No. 9: Chasse-Neige 42:47
    No.11: Feux Follets 56:20
    Certainly not a coincidence.

      +Echoherb Thanks, I hadn't spotted a couple of those! Personally I see No 6 as a reference to Liszt Transcendental Etude No. 10. 25:50 onwards is particularly similar.

    • @EmdrGreg
      @EmdrGreg 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wow. Very insightful observation-- I had to check the score to see the connection you made. You might very well be right, but it doesn't sound to me like an actual direct reference... more like a very happy coincidence. But you have a very sensitive ear-- well done.

    I first heard a pianist perform #10, "Lesghinka", when I was about 12. He introduced the piece with a story of finding the sheet music in the back stacks of the conservatory, and deciding to learn this unknown piece to put one over on his teacher who was mostly blind but somehow knew the entire repertoire off by heart and would critique his poor student without mercy. He described the corners of the pages crumbling in his hand as he photocopied the music. Surely his teacher wouldn't know THIS piece. Surely.
    (He did. The teacher couldn't have been more delighted, and tore the student's performance to shreds.)
    I fell in love with this music that evening, as not only did the humorous futility of the pianist's experience as a student capture my imagination, but the middle section at 51:20 captured my heart forever. I went on to learn it myself at University, and I consider it one of my musical high points.

      I guess money is the overruling factor here. If more money were to be made on the concert circuit with these wonderful but obscure composers, they would soon rise to the top of the bill. But audiences are not too discerning and concerned to do more than settle for the familiar.

    • @crly4770
      @crly4770 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davestrickland8378 Only partly true. There probably is a big audience for unknown composers and hard or drastic music but there is the pervasive influence of competitions, agents etc. that keeps things a bit more tame. Just consider the interest there would be for things like the busoni piano concerto or a complete rendering of the Godowsky Chopin etc etc. There is a huge audience not dissimilar to the technical guitar audience in metal music. I think it might indeed change actually.

    The best set of Lyapunov's Etudes, which are the second set of Liszt, in the remaining key signatures. A real Himalaya of the piano. Scherbakov has iron fists, velvet gloves, surgical precision, narrative, the whole picture. Excellent, sonorous and highly detailed recording to match. A classic!

  • @footlessgums1276

    Underrated melody at 38:59. I really feel the incessant energy of the Chopin Ab polonaise octaves and the drive of the Stretta (quasi presto) section of the Liszt Sonata before the Prestissimo octave finale. Really gives you that 'kick' any time of the day!

    4:45 I hear parts of the Dante Sonata here, the dream-like sections
    7:14 Carillons is inspired by Harmonies du Soir. Deep, resonating sounds of the bass register
    10:20 is reminiscent of Liszt's B minor sonata (grandiose theme)
    13:24 Térek is clearly a reference to Liszt's Appasionata etude no. 10, listen to the similar breathless appoggiaturas.
    And in 15:27, 16:30, 25:50 you can hear the similar broken chord pattern in the left hand to Appasionata.
    34:22 the harplike arpeggios are similar to the Spanish Rhapsody opening
    35:45 onwards is very similar to Totentanz.
    42:50 similar tremolo & trill technique of Chasse-Neige etude no. 12
    49:09 Lesghinka is eerily similar to Balakirev's Islamey. A highly virtuosic piece that Liszt performed in his recitals!
    56:20 Rondo des Sylphes sounds directly inspired by Feux Follets etude no. 5
    1:00:25 surely an homage to his Hungarian Rhapsodies

    These are curious pieces that are imbued with tonal colour and resounding timbres, but above all possessed of Liszt's aesthetics. They are just delightful salon pieces which I really enjoy. Thank you for all of your work uploading these pieces.

    Another great video for study or just listening. Thanks! By the way, I think the swipe/fades help, because you can still be looking at the last measure of a page while the next one is coming up, helping you to find it more quickly and keep the flow/continuity consistent. I'm planning on using the technique in my own score videos now that I've seen how it works.

    All of a sudden I wanted to share Lyapounov’s “Storm”, a single recording that has always been the top search result upon the query “Lyapunov”, and... and... now it is your video (with time markers) that I am going to share in order to acquaint people with Lyapounov’s heritage. Thank you for your... foresight, although, it is the happiness with tears on eyes, like the happiness of the people who cried “We won!” in 1945.

    Russian Liszt is definitely a fitting name for Lyapunov, maybe Liszt should be called Hungarian Lyapunov, though the former is definitely a better name since Liszt was almost 2 generations older

    All of these etudes can be related with a liszt piece for example 56:20 is a recreation of feux follets and the opening bars in 1:00:23 is very similar with Hungarian Rhapsody no 1 and G minor Vision etude

    Awesome composer, never really knew about him; thank you for bringing this to my/our attention. (Btw, how come almost all the well-known composers are male as in not female...kind of like the well-known architects...why all male...just wondering, but an interesting fact nonetheless).

    These Etudes are modeled after the Liszt Transcendental Etudes and if one listens carefully they can be matched to each one of the Liszt. These pieces should be standard repertoire because I think they are Equal to the Liszt ones.

    Thanks for this great upload and all your hard work ! I consider this set one of the supreme pinnacles of Russian piano literature (maybe even of all piano literature). With all respect to Scherbakov I don't think he does them quite right, his playing being rather brittle and matter-of-fact, lacking depth and opulence. But there aren't all that many good complete recordings of this obscenely difficult set, so we should complain too much.
    I'm intrigued about these yellow markers on the timeline which seem to mark the individual pieces, rather than ads as suggested by all postings I could find on Google. How did you create these please ?

    • @thenameisgsarci
      @thenameisgsarci  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      1) First of all, I'm glad to hear you liked it.
      2) I dunno how those yellow markers came up, but I definitely think it's Google's doing.

      Ideal set to be selected from Kentner, Scherbakov and Noack. It's great that in the last few decades a couple of really amazing records were released to compliment Kentner's pioneering versions. Maltempo recorded too but there is very little to select over the 3 above.
      Am going to record and post a few, the evocative quality of the music (central Asia, Russia, the Middle East collide) is something else. These are masterworks.

    As good as Liszt's (though Liszt wrote much that was far better, unlike Lyapunov). Lyapunov's brother was a great mathematician, famous for his analysis of the stability of equilibria.
