Horace Silver’s father was born in Cape Verde (now Cabo Verde) and came to the US at the age of 11. He taught Horace a lot of Cape Verdan folk music and his jazz is inflected with those rhythms. And yes Donald Fagen used the bass line for “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number.”

The beginning bars were identical to Steely Dan’s “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number”. This was lovely. Thanks Harri 🌺✌️

This is a quintet. One piano. You will notice the bassist is in tune with the left of Horace. To play in his band you had to be able to do that. I was an early follower of Horace Silver. The first album I purchased was in the late 50s. So I go back a long back with most of the fellas. Horace lived in Malibu before he went back to east coast. He had a radio show here. Being here myself, I spent many hours in such famous places as The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, and Shelly's Manne Hole in Hollywood. My wife and I saw Lee Morgan at his last appearance at the Lighthouse in 1970. They recorded an album there. I was also there when The Modern Jazz Quartet At The Lighthouse was recorded. Those were the days.

Harri, I can't stay silent anymore... thank you so much for reacting to great jazz, including this amazing piece, and for doing it so perceptively and enthusiastically! Leon Thomas did a must-hear vocal version of this with moving lyrics by Ellen May Shashoyan. And the tenor on this original track is the great Joe Henderson. Since you dug him here, I recommend checking out his version of "Invitation".
Finally, fun trivia: Horace Silver and Freda Payne, of "Band of Gold" fame, were very close platonic friends. Even though she is best known for that pop hit, she has always been primarily a jazz vocalist, and even did a version of Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman" on one of her early albums.

Surprise in the first line, followed by a masterpiece. Amazing musicians providing such a wonderful song, beautiful piano, the horns and the bass just magical. The Quintet was inspired after a trip to Brazil to record this album. The cover artwork for the album is Horace's Dad. This is amazing. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Mike. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

Upon returning from Rio, Silver recorded "Song for My Father" on October 26, 1964, with his newly formed quintet composed of bassist Teddy Smith, drummer Roger Humphries, trumpeter Carmell Jones, and tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson.

YES!!! My favorite Jazz musician! Harri, Steely Dan were influenced by Horace Silver; now that you have heard Song for my Father, listen to the opening of Steely Dan’s “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number” is basically the same opening. So much more; Please react to “Lonely Woman” and Senor Blues (Live Newport Version) ; absolutely some of the most beautiful music ever made ❤❤❤

Kudos to you Harri, nice to have a reactionary, that will finally do some jazz music to react to. Sadly most reaction channels seem to watch each other and they'll each listen to the very same things, but I noticed that you will go out on a limb here and there and that's very nice to see. Especially for us cats that dig other music besides just rock pop. Keep it up sir. Very tasty tune I performed at myself with my band.

I was going to say that the beginning sounds like Steely Dan's Rikki Don't Lose That Number. But apparently, Horace patterned it after Brazilian music, I believe. Either way, it's such a delightful composition.

    • @barrycohen311

Errr....you are close but no cigar for you. :-) Horace released this in 1965. Steely Dan, who were jazz fans, most definitely paid homage to this song in the opening bass riff on Ricky Don't Lose This Number which came out in the early 1970s...

Your ear is good, but you are wrong about it being the same band. The song you are thinking of is Rikki Don’t Lose That Number by Steely Dan. Horace Silver was a HUGE influence on them and the opening chords of Rikki are a tribute to Horace in general and this song specifically.
