This project is supported by award-winning South African playwright, Athol Fugard:
This project will be, to my reckoning, an important contribution to a body of artistic and scholarly work that seeks to give a voice to marginalized peoples in South Africa. Its great strength in this regard is that it tells the individual story of a family, and thereby resists the temptation to generalize lived experience. For too long has South Africa focused on its dominant narratives, and ignored the stories on the edges. This project, with its focus on the karretjie people of the Karoo, attempts to do just that and, as such, deserves all the support it can get.

I did my national service at the Infantry School in Oudtshoorn in 1979/80. Once a month on a Saturday morning, the entire (untarred) parking lot off Baron von Rheede street was filled to capacity with 'karretjies', parked wherever they could find a place, preferably in the shade of an acacia tree, while their owners went shopping and socialised. The most pleasant, peaceful, colourful bunch of gypsies you could ever wish to meet. Mense met hart. Excellent documentary, hats off to Timothy Gabb.

All these anecdotes need to be documented and preserved in the history of the Khoisan/Kullid people of the country.

Majority of South African towns and cities are built on the ancient Kraale Xhaam/Khwena peoples homes. Contrary to popular belief that the indigenous people, were backward, yet prior to European and Bantu contact, these people traded with and also married with Dravidian Malay Arab and Chinese traders. The narrative of backwardness needs to change
