I can't but imagine how blown someone's mind from the 1850s would be hearing and seeing this performed.
Probably my favorite classical piece of music. And this orchestra played it perfectly.

That is how it is done. The piano part was well articulated, in fact it all was. This is one of the best performances of this that I have heard.

composition bradley Zimmerman version is my second favorite just a bit below Cziffra’s version. Overall Zimmerman is my favorite pianist
Listen to Alfred Brendel's recording. I had it on a record when I was a kid. I enjoyed it very much!
Indeed, it is the sublime articulation of the piano part that also caught my ear, so to speak. Truly marvelous.

This is one of my favourite pieces of music. When Liszt first performed this piece he very likely demonstrated that he was there top pianist in the world at that time.Hats off to the most challenging instrument in Totentnz...the triangle player jeez he rocked! Great performance of a most technically challenging symphonic piece!

If you want to hear a totally wild interpretation of this wild composition, full of the terror, horror and beauty of the Day of Judgement, listen to the live solo version by John Ogdon from Butler University on TH-cam, it's stunningly brilliant and truly equal to the original frescos by Orcagna.

Franz Liszt just composed such brilliant pieces and of course might have been the greatest pianist of all time. Human beings can create such beauty ( but unfortunately can destroy)

I heard this play in the background of some video and couldn't quite remember what it was. When I went looking around for it I listened to works by composers like Stravinsky and Honegger. Incredible Liszt was already writing like this.

Not “any” person. It’s still hard to do and you can hurt your fingers if you don’t have the right technique or a good piano.

I agree entirely. Phenomenal performance ! As a musician, I know how difficult it is to pull off such an extraordinary piece so successfully with great drive and panache. Modern audiences are not all music lovers and versed in piano technique, generally preferring more melodious works.

Wow, such great articulations. I can feel all the emotions such as urgent rush to beat the clock and sadness. I want to be able to show my emotions through music like Liszt and Rachmaninoff. Bravo
There were a few empty seats in this concert hall back in 2014. Watch them today and the place is packed. This was a good performance but this orchestra has really taken some giant steps forward. One of the best around today, anywhere in the world.

The contrast between the initial grave sound of piano and the subsequent scintillating sound thereof is quite impressive. The soloist undoubtedly has the technique with which he can do almost everything. The well-restrained accompaniment by the excellent orchestra is also remarkable.

waouh ! une interprétation magnifique ! à couper au couteau ! acérée comme c 'est pas possible , virtuose certes, mais avec en ligne de mire la musicalité. J 'ai écouté la version de Matsuev : aussi belle mais un poil en dessous de celle de Chamayou . Peut-être l 'orchestre en est -il en partie responsable ? L ' Orchestre de de la radio de Frankfurt a une rusticité ( écoutez les cors ! ) , qui sied parfaitement à la musique de Liszt.

Bravissimo!! 😍 It’s only today (after having heard this countless times) I realised that this is basically variations on Dies Irae and that Liszt also transcribed Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz, containing a very similar sounding Dies Irae in the 5th movement.
Similar, but still a world of difference.
The theme is exactly that of the 5th movement of Berlioz Fantastic Symphony... Then Liszt varies it to the exhaustion... The name should be "Totentanz: variations on a theme of Berlioz" :P.

Excellent, but I prefer a slower tempo in the last measures for a more powerful (and menacing) effect. This interpretation is a bit too brilliant and not quite "diabolical" enough (for me).

Wonderful playing across the board. Unfortunately it lacks the grit and existential anguish required by this particular piece. I might suggest the performance available on yt by Matsuev as comparison.

This is definitely the audience from hell. No doubt about it. Remind me of this next time I get any ideas of visiting Frankfurt. Just awful, the way they show no enthusiasm for that GREAT performance, without a single person standing up. Insane. And sad. Don't they realize they're in the presence of the greatest pianist possible?
I totally agree! I am an anesthesiologist and I am guessing that the audience received propofol during this brilliant performance.

Totentanz are Slovak dances, because from the defeat of Great Moravia in 907 until the creation of Czechoslovakia in 1918, the Hungarians called Slovaks Toth, because they subverted and destroyed their state of Great Moravia. That is why the state of Great Moravia was dead.

Brilliant technique by Chamayou and very solid performance by this Radio-Orchestra. Unfortunately without any dynamics and emotions. A rather uninspiring interpretation. There are many better examples here on TH-cam where you can literally feel death's grip on your neck. Totentanz is one of the gems of classical music, but in order to show it's true beauty it needs true artists just like a diamond needs gifted cutters.
