    An oops from me regarding Guitar analogy with the Jaw Harp. Thanks @johnmaloney for pointing it out: The sound waves created by the strings don't go into the body through the sound hole/F-holes, bounce around, and come back out. That's a common misconception. They cause the top of the instrument to vibrate, which is what amplifies the sound. The purpose of the sound hole/F-holes is to allow the top to vibrate more feely and to allow air to escape the body and help projection.
    So throw out that analogy, however, a jaw harp does still use your mouth as a resonator :)

      If you liked Stryper, you'll love Steelheart. Listen to their songs "I'll Never Let You Go" and "Can't Stop Me Loving You". Most people would suggest "She's Gone", which is still a good song, but I feel "Can't Stop Me Loving You" has better high notes. Of course, "I'll Never Let You Go" is their most famous song so everyone recommends that one. 🙂

    Ötüken was the capital of the First Turkic Khaganate and Uyghur Khaganate. It has an important place in Turkic mythology and Tengrism. Otukan (Ötüken) is also one of the names given to Mother Earth. Otuken is located in Kharkhorin district in Övörkhangai Province of present-day Mongolia.
    Etügen Eke (Mother Earth) is an earth goddess in Tengrism. She was believed to be perpetually virginal. The word "etugen" associates with woman and daughter of Kayra. Also her name may have originated from Ötüken, the holy mountain of the earth and fertility gddess of the ancient Turks. Medieval sources sometimes pair Etugen with a male counterpart named Natigai or Nachigai(Natikai, Natıkay), although this is probably a mistake based on a mispronunciation of Etugen. In mythology Etugen is often represented as a young woman riding a grey bull.

    Both, Ummet Özcan and the band members of Otyken have Turkic roots, both belong to different Turkic tribes whose original homeland was central Asia and Siberia.
    Over thousands of years, due to migration and the very large geographical areas, the different Turkic tribes grew apart from each other. Some of these tribes even migrated across the Bering Strait to North America thousands of years ago and are the ancestors of the indigenous tribes there.
    Although the various Turkish clans are widely distributed throughout Asia and Europe, they share the same original language, culture, instruments and mythology. According to Turkic mythology and stories, the area around the Altay Mountains is the original home of many Turkic tribes and "Otyken/Ötüken" is the first capitol of these tribes. This area is sacred to all Turks.
    Ummet Özcan, who himself has Turkish roots, is a DJ and lives in the Netherlands. He uses the throat singing technique here, which is very common among the Turkic and Mongolian peoples in Asia. Many instruments used here are also ancient and traditional. The second instrument Ozcan plays in the video is the "dombra" also called ikili (iki means 2 in Turkish) because it has 2 strings. A further development of this is the Turkish Saz/Bağlama which has more strings (6 - 7).
    The mouth instrument you call jaw harp looks modern, but the traditional version of it has existed for hundreds of years and is called "Gubuz". If I saw it correctly, there is also something like "Muhinhur" (an instrument with a horse's head and the strings made from the hair of the horse's mane) and "Kılkopuz", also called ikili, a kind of mixture of violin and double bass, the strings also made of horse hair.
    Otyken sings about the Altay /Altai mountains so far I could understand (because I can hear her singing "dağlar" which means mountains ın turkic languages)
    Ozcan sinngs about ancient Turkish deities that the Turks believed in before the emergence of the monotheistic religions when they were still shamans. From the names of the deities we can also deduce that these peoples were led more by matriarchy.
    Here are the names of some of the goddesses and gods Özcan sings about:
    * Tengri = sky god. He is the creator of everything. Tengri was the main god of the Turkish pantheon who controlled the celestial sphere.
    * Kayra or Kaira = Supreme God of the Universe
    * Adaghan = mountain god.
    * Ülgen or Ulgen = God of goodness.
    * Mergen = God of wisdom.
    * Kyzaghan/Kızagan = god of war
    * Umay = goddess of fertility. She is also the goddess of virginity and therefore refers to women, mothers and children.
    * Kuara = God of Thunder
    * Kubai/Kübey = Goddess of birth and children. It protects women who give birth.She gives children soul.
    * Koyash/Kuyaş = Sun God. Koyash is the son of Sky Tengri and the Earth Goddess.
    * Ak Ana = (Ak means White) Goddess of Creation. She is the original creator goddess of the Turkish people. She is known as the goddess of water.
    * Ay Ata = God of the Moon.
    * Gun Ana/Gün Ana =
    Goddess of the Sun.
    * Yel Ana = Goddess of the Wind
    * Yer Ata = God of the Earth
    * Od Ata or Öd-Ögöd = God of time. In Turkish mythology, he is seen as the personification of time. Often seen with the Time Horse
    Od Ana = Goddess of Fire. She is also called the goddess of marriage.

    Through learning more traditional throat-singing, I had taught myself how to play overtone melodies when I played didgeridoo. One of the most profound musical experiences I've ever had was being surrounded by the members of Huun Hur Tu after one of their shows, and playing "Arte Sayur" (sort of the Tuvan national anthem) while they sang. Their vocals were nearly palpable; it felt like I could lean against them. In one evening those musicians taught me as much about art as I had learned in a lifetime as an artist. Anyone interested in more traditional overtone styles should check out Huun Hur Tu and the incredible singer Ondar, as well as the documentary Genghis Blues. There's so much being done with this music now (it's everywhere in movies; the Sardauker planet in Dune, for instance), and it makes me very happy to see this exposure and innovation. Thank you for featuring this!

    I was born and grew up in that City. When I was visiting my parents in 2014 I went to the Honey museum you mentioned and met Andrey. He is a very interesting character. Praises old Russian monarchy, doesn't believe men and women are equal in rights. He said that many problems we have now is because men are too soft nowadays and "can't keep their wives in an iron body (means they can't force discipline and point out that their place is in the kitchen /laundry room, etc). Also said he wished he lived in the end of the 19"th century when everything was as it should be.
    Wonder if he's changed his views since then. 🤔

    Ötüken is one of the names given to Mother Earth in Tengriism, the traditional belief of the ancient Turks (Göktürk State).
    Altai people are one of the Turkic peoples. Most of them live in the Altai Republic in Siberia. There are also Altai people living in the Tuva Autonomous region of Russia. As a note, Altai mountains are the homeland of the Turks.

    If you Interest I can explain first part .. Throath Sing lyrics. As you know Ummet Ozcan also a Shaman a Tengri believer ... he follow old roads like many others. (Yes .. Shamanism popular again)
    ... and Lyrics
    At the start .... he start with this "Innocent like a born from a teenage girl" then he kept with Ancient Turkic God and Goddesses names ... Kök Tengri, Kayra, Erlik, Ulgen, Mergen, Kyzaghan, Umay, Kuara ,Kubai , Kuyash, Jak Ana , Ay Ata, Gun Ana, Yel Ana, Yel Ata ... those are god and goddess from Turkic Mitology. He kept continue with other names ... Burkut , Öd Boz Tengri, Aisyt , Su Ana, Su Ata, Od Ana, Od Ata,Yer Tanrı, Hurmuz, Jaiyk, Alaz, Bananai, Kailyn, Etugen ...
    ... every name has meanings, had purpose ... like ... Od Ana (Female Protector of Fire) and Od Baba (Male Protector of Flame) and Alaz (Flame) this is old way, call their names for success, for being victor. Guess what? Ummet Ozcan succeeded thanks to his old God's and Goddesses :)

    Beth you are learning so fast. For me throat singing is something very special - it invokes something ancient but calm in me. Its connection to our ancient past. I wrote that women could learned throat singing but it takes a lot.They are wondefull . Trying to preserve tradition and language and promote culture that few people are aware of. Same as HU.Go Beth, music are universal language of homo sapens species that inhabits our Planet.

    Such a great song. I've always been fascinated by throat singing and often wondered what may have inspired people to take the time to develop the techniques. Btw, just a quick correction to what you were saying about how acoustic guitars work ... The sound waves created by the strings don't go into the body through the sound hole/F-holes, bounce around, and come back out. That's a common misconception. They cause the top of the instrument to vibrate, which is what amplifies the sound. The purpose of the sound hole/F-holes is to allow the top to vibrate more feely and to allow air to escape the body and help projection. But there are acoustics without any holes in the top that are just as loud.

    You really should check out the Louvin Brothers. An old country close harmony brother duo act. They grew up singing sacred harp gospel. They were known for one brother singing high and one low and seamlessly switching places, oftentimes with few audience members realize that the brother that was just lower was now higher and vice versa. The Louvin Brothers are classics.
    Also for anyone interested there is an incredible podcast episode of the podcast Cocaine and Rhinestones about The Louvins. There story is wild and amazing and tragic and the episode is full of amazing old music clips.

    Hi Beth, this is my first time on your channel - by the way, I loved it. Regarding Otyken, I discovered it recently and was intrigued by the beautiful music they make. Regarding the instrument you ask about, at 04:46, played by Ummet, it is called "Berimbau" here in Brazil, and I don't know for sure, but perhaps it has African origins (Angola), or even from the city of Salvador, in the State of Bahia Brazil. It is often used in a dance/fight called "Capoeira". I hope I helped you. Peace and tranquility to all.

    Throat singing is the manipulation of the false fold by using air pressure. You can make 3 different sounds at the same time. For the low notes, imagine grunting you feel a little vibration deep down in the throat. Push the air and try to maintain that deep vibration, and you will hear it start to sound like a motorcycle. Try not to hurt yourself your body is not used to using this muscle so train it. Then you can add overtones and you will sound like a tree frog. I have tought it to a few people. I like it because I am into octavism and it makes my normal singing voice even more powerful over time. Overtones are not a form of throat singing it is a manipulation of the tongue on the roof of the mouth.

    Absolutely beautiful and, yes, fascinating. I'm always moved by the depth of feeling coming from various native performers..especially when doing their native music. As an aside...you did Amarillo by Morning (George Strait) not long ago. Now look up the same song...Bluegrass Cover...an Asian group. Listen to the erhu...unbelievable and another example of cross heritage playing creating beautiful music.

    Very well done the choreography, the editing, the contrast between the two singers, the dimensional shifting, as the harmonies bring resonance to the heart. Great job.
    Yes this band opens up realms to other different dimensions in a resonance of a flow that generates a positive lift of the spirit. As we move forward on the timeline warriors of light in all forms, in all the arts, in all the earth rise with song and dance lyrics to enhance, to meet the challenge as the veil is removed between realms to bring joy as a most powerful weapon against darkness that threatens all the tribes of humanity in the last days cycle of the circle of time. In Ancient Atlantis sound vibrations, with crystals were used for prayer, meditation, healing, time dialation and cutting of megalithic structures and stones, by a device called a Resonator.
