- Directed by John Sarsfield and James Maguire between 1958 and 1959, Once Upon a Tram immortalizes one of the last runs of the Howth Tram that linked the villages of Howth and Sutton that lie along the County Dublin coast, 9 miles from the city centre. Families escaping the hustle and bustle of city life would head there for an afternoon at the seaside.
Narrator - Cyril Cusack.

What a delightful little film, must be unique.
What a delightful film. Not seen this before. I always regret never being able to ride this line. In 1959 I was eleven years old, riding the last trams in Leeds. Yet another lost gem which would, today, be a major attraction.
That chilled me out. What a shame it’s gone. Now Sutton & Howth are just one big traffic jam.
Used to do my shopping in Sutons or Swoords.
Always remember Howth, the day with my family at the sea side.
After many years after coming back for a couple years ,live in Sonesta, Malahide.
Dubling family all over these areas, is mandatory visit to Howth Hill.
The last time there ,my heart collapse, those flats ,like Spanish sea resort, out of place.

This film is a priceless masterpiece, A lot of that tramline still exists as walkways part of it goes past my house, a portion of it could be easily resurrected, what an attraction that would be
Really beautiful film-making, and such a wonderful, magical ride. Happily, the Isle of Man held onto theirs!

When the trams were being sold off my Dad bought one and it was a landmark in our garden for people on the way to Brittas bay till the mid eighties
And one still lives at the Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris, California twixt Los Angeles and San Diego
If that's the tram up on a cliff looking out to sea,I've golden memories in the 80s, walking along a skinny path with ferns everywhere, and the tram was used as a holiday home. Lovely memories 💖

Very nice presentation except for the music which was far too intrusive. Drowned out the commentary for me.

My thoughts exactly.
I didn't find it too bad. Cyril Cusack did have a tendency to speak very low. What struck me however was how glum many of the people looked, including the 'artist'. Perhaps they all had bad teeth - dental services were more primitive then. As a child I can remember in the early 1960s being held down in the dentist's chair by a nurse while the dentist placed a mask over my face to knock me out with gas. I was terrified of dentists after that for years.
I actually thought the music was appropriate and complemented the film documentary as the narration well, albeit a wee bit loud chaps.
