  • THIS VIDEO: I saw the film, Paris, Texas in the early eighties - it was a real revelation. Vim Venders was also a well-regarded photographer. His photo-series Written in the West was exhibited at the Centre Pompedou in 1986 - that’s a big deal - it is like being shown at MOMA in the US. The images were taken during a recce trip that Wenders went on in 1983. He travelled across Texas, California, Arizona, and New Mexico, to look for potential filming locations and sources of inspiration. Like so many photographers who become directors, Wenders maintains a photographer’s eye.

Paris, Texas has grown and modernized, but when I drive west from the Austin area (avoiding Interstate highways) I still see these nostalgic scenes. The dry and desolate landscape, the abandonment, the feeling that life has passed on to another place. But sometimes, even illusions are comforting. Thank you again for introducing another a rich figure in photography and film.

I really enjoyed this video. I watched "Paris, Texas" for the first time just a couple of months ago and loved the story and cinematography. I'm going to try to find a copy of his book. Thanks for bringing this work to our attention.

Excellent. I saw Paris, Texas when it came out and would love to see it again. Our perceptions change over time, don’t they.

Yes, but some of the scenes are still powerful.

@@PhotoConversations I didn't mean to imply that it wasn't powerful. I should have been more specific. I was thinking how I'm a different person than I was a few decades ago.

Topical. As desolate as current US politics! Which isn't to say that it is bad. It is a very good summary.

    • @PhotoConversations

That's true - US politics looks pretty bleak from here right now.

    Essentially, another America bashing movie.

I didn't make that connection. Wenders is fascinated with the US.
