I think a partial clean up would look good on that aloe; which is already a STUNNER! Trim some off, stand back and take a look. Maybe take a bit more off and take a look... take it slow...lol. Those containers are also brilliant; especially the green striped pot. Looking forward to seeing this installation progress... thanks for taking us along on the ride Laura🤩

I like the cleaner look, so I would take the spent leaves off. But that said, I live in northern CA, where it doesn’t get nearly the summer heat as Escondido, so I don’t need to worry so much about damage to the trunk. And, btw, I hope the Plumeria do get a more prominent spot, to show off their glory to the fullest. How I wish I could grow them where I live!

I could go either way but I'm more inclined to say leave them on. What if u take them off and the trunk which has been covered in the shade gets burnt bc it's not used to the light or elements... It is beautiful after all. I think I know what ur going to do tho 😆

I'm really hoping you will spread the Plumeria out a bit towards the front of the yard. I have some in my yard that are as tall as my house, big canopy, and they are absolutely gorgeous!
Weighing in on the aloe, usually I would say clean it up, but with this one, it kind of has a tentacle look to it, which I'm not opposed to.
All up, I think this is going to look supreme when you are done! I'd also love to know what succulents you are going to use in the lower terrace, as I'm guessing it will get quite hot there (I'm looking for ones that can handle 30 C (86 F) and humidity ... I have had to be very strategic so far in where I place my echiveria, sedum, etc., as I get quite attached to them and don't want to lose them. Even my golden barrel got grumpy! Crassula Ovata work, but I'd love more variety).

The bearded aloe is a marlothii aloe. Please research before removing the dried pieces on the trunk. We got one (baby 5 gallon not yet trunking) and we’re told by the grower that the lower leaves on the trunk protect from extreme heat in the summer and below freezing in the winter. I placed mine behind my iron front fence so you could still see it but the fence will camouflage most of the trunk as it matures.

Laura, on the pot irrigation. Get greg to route a small line from the water source up the hole in the bottom of the pot to the top of the pot and add emitters. Thst way your irrigation will take care of the providing water to the pot. We do this. Unless of course if your client is not going to water those pots manually.

Regarding manscaping, Aloe should be clean in residential gardens. Yucca however can retain their uniform thatch and be very beautiful.

  • @BNJBarber

About the beard,,, can you cut out the innermost part and leave some carefully selected ones in place. Makes it look more cared for rather than neglected. I’m guessing the trunk left beardless is not too attractive, so a few strands carefully left might enhance its exotic appearance.

5 day wow. No beard. The trunk is half the interest of the plant as a sculptural specimen. Re changing those plumerias around when they look so cool now, to quote RuPaul, "Don't F it up!"

Clean up the trunks helps see that no mille or other bugs are hidding there & in my opinion looks cleaner rather than messy.

  • @elizabethacheson4298

Laura can't believe you would even contemplate leaving that beard on! This reminds me of when we were asked to vote on whether Greg left his "old man beard" (your words) on or shaved it off! If you leave that beard on that plant I'm a monkey's uncle! 🤣🤣🤣 Your OCD ain't got time for that!

I don't know what to do about that mystery aloe. I think it needs a biiig trim--imo, it looks neglected and kind of scary with all that shriveled, shaggy stuff hangin' off it, but if it needs that beard for protection, then...? Maybe stick it in a corner somewhere and plant things in front of it?

Like any adolescent male, shave the beard until you can really grow one. I think once the aloe has a good sized trunk, let the beard stay.
And I don't know what to say about the pachy... Because mine has gone dormant again. It broke dormancy, put out a flush of leaves, and now hasn't put out a new leaf in weeks... But hasn't dropped any leaves, so who knows.

Well, I like the clean look as well. BUT when I visit Ruth Bancroft Nursery in Walnut Creek and there are amazing older specimens with their aprons still attached, I realize that is very beautiful, natural look. I'd ask the homeowner their preference, but since everything else is clean why not one big rugged masculine messy guy for the drama?!
