Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Danny ran into some complications
He falls asleep during conversations
He's gotta search the street
When he's on vacation
The worst thing is that I'm in the same situation
[Chorus]
And all I do is sit and think about you
If I knew what you'd do
Collapse my veins wearing beautiful shoes
It's not living if it's not with you
[Verse 2]
And Danny says we're living in a simulation
But he works in a petrol station (selling petrol)
He says it all began with his operation
And I know you think you're sly
But you need some imagination
[Chorus]
And all I do is sit and think about you
If I knew what you'd do
Collapse my veins wearing beautiful shoes
It's not living if it's not with you
All I do is sit and drink without you
If I choose then I lose
Distract my brain from the terrible news
It's not living if it's not with you
[Bridge]
I can't stop sweating
Or control my feet
I've got a twenty-stone monkey
That I just can't beat
I can stage a situation
But I just can't eat
And there's a feeling
You're replacing embrace
[Chorus]
It's true that
All I do is sit and think about you
If I knew what you'd do
Collapse my veins wearing beautiful shoes
It's not living if it's not with you
All I do is sit and drink without you
If I choose then I lose
Distract my brain from the terrible news
It's not living if it's not with you
[Outro]
Oh, I'll try to get a job in a bank, I think
Danny spent time trying to pack in the drinks for me
I feel sick and I know I can't lose but
It's not living if it's not with you
It's not, it's not
It's not living if it's not with you
It's not, it's not
It's not, it's not
It's not living if it's not with you
It's not living if it's not with you
It's not, it's not
It's not, it's not
It's not, it's not
It's not living if it's not with you

peartroll a lot like INXS and New Order. I love the sound
More of their songs plsss
Literally go listen to any 1975 band and you'll find this sound all over
They have that name for a reason
Matt Blade that’s not the reason they chose that name tho
Deep lyrics. Heroin is no joke. Glad he's sober and kicking ass these days!
He still use them?
that hit me in the feels
no hes sober

Change of Heart.
This song has two moods. Either you’re dancing around your room singing into a hairbrush or sitting on your shower floor staring into the drain
shower floor? w- did you fall or something??
o no this comment is too relatable O_O
i think that’s for all their songs tbh lol
@@maryjanehansen7947 i think they're crying in the shower

“It’s not living if it’s not with you” are such simple yet such profound lyrics when you think about them being about Matty’s heroin addiction. As someone who’s been through the hell of substance abuse and addiction myself, those lyrics are so heavy to me. I would forget what life was like when I wasn’t high because I was high all the time for 4 years straight. It didn’t even feel right to exist without being high because I had grown used to living that way for so long. Been sober now for 15 months, and to think I used to get sick if I didn’t have my fix in a few hours. Proud of Matty for kicking addiction’s ass because it’s one of the hardest fights a person could have.
Edit: Just wanted to thank everyone for your kind words and positivity. I really appreciate all of your thoughtful and encouraging comments, and thank you for all the likes as well!
Congratulations ♥
Jamie Fredericks thank you!
TuccTownLaydii - you're right, and there are so many aspects of the struggle that people don't even think about. just waking up in that same room, the room you've spent years waking up in and immediately doing that same thing, every morning... that's no joke.
good for you and here's to the next 15 months.
NewGoldStandard absolutely, I know the feeling all too well. Thank you for your support!
Omg dude, that is so emotional! Congratulations for been strong and I wish you the best.
My all-time favorite song. “It’s not living if it’s not with you” is one of the most profoundly vulnerable statements I’ve ever heard. I think everyone’s felt that way about someone/something at least once in their lives, but it takes a lot of courage to admit that kind of dependency.
Same here. The title alone is hauntingly beautiful. This was my number one most listened to song on Spotify this year. I simply cannot get enough of it.
SAME HERE! it’s the first time in a long time i’ve been able to listen to a song on loop and not get sick of it!!!
I was looking for this comment. I cri.
I felt that way about a person. Their existence in your life can feel like a drug. Just how good they make u feel and how beautiful they are as a person makes u not ever want them out of your life. The way u need a bit of them every day like a drug.
I don’t have drug addictions, but I do have a drinking problem and I know it’s based of drug addiction but it hits home for me.
Those colours go perfectly with this song
I know right. It goes so prefect with it. It get me so nostalgic 😭😭
such a Sunset Driving song!
Ironic that this song is about addiction because I can't stop listening to it.
😂
😂😂😂
Too funny!
I see what you did there. 🥁
Ughhh yea its the illest shit ever. Who wants to live without dope? Theres a reason people give up everything for it
I have listened to this a unhealthy amount of times
Gippy Gamer this song and love it if we made it .... great songs

Homie... same. It’s ridiculous
Dude same
same nah i listened to this song nonstop for like 2 hours man
I maladaptive daydream (daydreaming a lot, creating scenarios etc) and although its not classified as a mental disorder, experts say it "gets in the way of living in reality" and can lead a person preferring their story more than real life. Although this song may be about a drug addiction, I feel like its perfect for what I feel towards my situation.
(edit: i'm kinda happy to know i'm not the only one who does this😅)

Comments: *HEROIN*
Yeah same 😅
@A M Well I interpreted it as the person getting lovestruck after seeing their love in beautiful shoes >_>
@A M
I thought the dude bought and wore a few sets of shoes but some of them didn't fit which is why his veins' blood flow stopped and thus collapsed
Since I have not had any experience with drugs, I just take it as a love song. It's all up to your own interpretation. I can and still really enjoy this song, it just adds an extra layer of meaning behind it.
Freaky do you know „pure heroine by lorde“ ?
I used to play this song everyday on my way from school. I hated school with passion since I didn’t have any friends and I was failing in all my classes. This song helped me feel more alive and sane after any mentally or physically exhausting day. It’s like a friend to me :)
Apparently I failed too.... It's a pity that found this song today
Nishita Sharma Let’s just hope that it will get better.
I hope you are okay
Zaimah it got better since its all online now :)
@@thatfrog674 yupp! Keep doing better okay!!
I’m 54 years old and over the last twelve months I have really gotten into The 1975
Considering these lads grew up with each other and have been playing music since they were around 13 years old they have turned into the band I listen to all the time, the songwriting is so so clever. Pleased to hear Matt is better again and here’s too a massive 2019. I have tickets to go and see them in Glasgow and Manchester in Jan 2019 and can’t wait.
So wholesome
I actually got super emotional listening to this. Gotta love how The 1975 can make such beautiful music about such honest, hard hitting topics
That's the 80s vibe baby!! Anything can be sad initially, but brings you up.
The line "Distract my brain from the terrible news" will forever be my favourite most relatable line ever...
so proud of the band. especially proud of matty for getting sober 💞 you all rock
What I love most about this song is that everyone can interpret it in their own way, yet again a bop by the 1975 xo
Should be played and explained to everyone who doesn't understand addiction. First listen, you imagine the love for your partner or loved ones, such a strong emotion. But when you realise the real sentiment behind it, you can grasp why addicts are addicted and how hard it is to leave. As you would find it hard to leave a loved one. Simple but magnificent song writing. Singing 1000 words in a 100.

It’s really amazing that a song with such dark and personal subject matter could be so up beat and hopeful. Damn I love this band.
This song really makes me think about being addicted to anything, if that makes any sense. A drug, alcohol, a toxic person. Just my thoughts
As interesting as that sounds, he says its NOT living if its NOT with you, not if it is with you. that person must be a good person to mean that, not a toxic person cuz if the person was toxic freedom would eventually make them feel alive again (or at least more so.) *has escaped from one.
@@AlphaTengua very true
@@AlphaTengua As a type of addict myself, I think it's a form of irony. When you engage in an addiction, it feels like you're 'alive'. And then, when you are recovering from an addiction, the worst thing about it is that it doesn't feel like 'living' in the same way that your vice does. Heroin, in particular, is described as feeling 'better than sex'. So when you're recovering, it doesn't feel like living. I think he's still talking about addiction.
Yup
YES!! ahh that's why i feel like i can relate so much to this song even if i'm not addicted to drugs.
The 1975 are so different to any other band out there atm, very spiritually gifted in my opinion. There music and lyrics speak to us all in different ways which make them one of a kind.
You should check out Greta Van Fleet and The Struts they are really good and pretty different from what’s out there now :) (sorry for any spelling mistakes )
It's so sad that these are real feelings about drugs. But they make it look so poetically beautiful.
feels like it's the summer of 1983
somewhere in northern italy?
+onlyangel why would you say that? are you from there?
Drew Jamila haha no :) there’s a movie set in northern italy during the summer of 1983
@@regionals CMBYN reference? YAAAAS.
trumanblack yessss you know that movie too CMBYN
They've done it again with that signature song style. Such a chill song to roll down the window at night as you drive around.
I know everyone’s posted about the context and how profound these lyrics are in terms of mattys addiction and everything but even if you take that context away the beautiful lyrics “it’s not living if it’s not with you” really gets me emotional just thinking about people who we’ve loved and lost but still think about and feel heartache over. It’s not living if it’s not with you, really makes my heart hurt even without the drug related context :(
Totally agree
yes! to me this song is about addiction, whether its being obsessed with a drug or a person
You can interpret it however you want 🙂
That's the most beautiful part. I didn't even know the song was about drugs at first. But damn did she feel like a drug when I was around her. The way they someone can make u feel, feels like you're on a drug.
To be fair I cried at this song because he went through a detox from heroin and he didn’t wanna loose and he did it !1!1!-!
He dont use heroin anymore ?
Jewel Foster no
Love your no rome screenshot haha
I love how cheery the beat is and how much the lyrics just contrast with that. It’s just perfect
This song always reminds me that i wouldn't have lived this long if it weren't for my girlfriend helping me from the years of struggle with my chronic depression.. Thank you Juliana..It really isnt living if its not with you.
guess thats not true anymore…:))

@@FragmentedR_YT It reminded me of Genesis "No Son of Mine" kind of vibe.
This song helps me when I feel hollow. Like it puts all the chaos around me into perspective and I can just stare into space with this song on full blast. It makes me feel seen.
Before I even found out this dude was in recovery, before he even uttered the word veins i knew this song was about Heroin. 6 years clean & I can still think that way. sick.

Same and they quick as hell turned to my fav band 🖤
FINALLY,I saw the notification for the actual song come up a couple hours ago and I’ve been waiting for this desperately ever since
I'm addicted to this song. 🤗 Very catchy, also has a vibe of songs made in the 80s or 70s.
Smooth, captivating, catchy.
Pleasant.
First heard it tonight in a pub didn't know who it was but I liked it immediately. By pure chance watching Graham Norton show and the band featured on it.
Thanks fate !
oh yes, The Graham Norton Show is responsible for me getting to know quite a lot of new songs and/or bands :)
Tootime will grow on you if you watch it and listen to it multiple times but not their one of bests imho. But this?
This is their best sound-wise music this year next to sincerity is scary. I'd play this on summer while driving next to beach.
Exactly 🙌
Yeah exactly
Kevin Bargola love it if we made it is a masterpiece tho!
M D agree
I had the EXACT same experience. Whenever their new releases have a different sound (Give Yourself a Try, and especially TOOTIME) I dislike it at first, and then they grow on me to become some of my favorites. But I immediately knew this would be a Top 3 The 1975 song when I heard it. Right up there with Sex and Me IMO.
I've listened to this song well over 50 times now and on repeat, and I still haven't gotten tired of it
According to my Apple Music, I’ve just hit my 900th play count for Its Not Living on iTunes alone, with tootime being the highest played song in my library, at 1433 listens. I think I may be addicted….
Heard this song on the radio about 4 days ago. Been searching for it since. Didn't know who the artist was. Now that I've found it, i can't stop hitting replay. Good band!!
So I lost my beautiful sister to a brain aneurysm at the age of 32 and since that I don't feel to live.. when I heard this song wow I need to live for Everything.. Jesus take the wheel.. Jessica I love you always and forever babes I miss you love.. it's not living if it's not with you.. love always Raquel Victoria Gore
As for many of us that assumed this was a cute uplifting love song when it's actually about Matt's heroin addiction, doesn't mean we can't dance to it and enjoy it in a lighter form.
I absolutely respect Matt that he's regarding his drug addiction through his art and as well as people who went through the same thing and feel connected to the song;
but for some of us that like to enjoy it in a positive form instead of a depressing one, I personally also see this as a love song. The lyrics can also incorporate Danny being that loopy & out of touch because he could be madly in love with someone.
This song fucks me up because I'm literally living the lyrics.....

the comments ruined this song for me lol. i thought it was a "happy" song, but now that I know it's about his heroin addiction,i feel depressed. it's interesting how he can come up with an upbeat song about a highly traumatic experience. music is one of the best coping mechanisms to ever exist. i hope anyone that has dealt with substance abuse, or is still dealing with it, knows that they're strong enough to overcome their addiction
Music is subjective it can be a love song to you
It can mean whatever it means to you, even if it is about doing heroin. I'm glad it meant something else to you at first. You have dealt with a lot if you catch the metaphor in this song instantly.

After my ex walked out of my life unexpectedly, it's been hard to process my emotions. This song helps. The lyrics are hugely applicable to the loss of someone you love, the withdrawal feelings and the similarity to giving up an addiciton.
i just found out this band 20 minutes ago and i've already fall in love with their music
Dang I’m glad u found out abt them I saw them in Vegas when they did a brief inquiry into online relationships (this album)
I’ve been listening to this for hours. I keep moving to the song.
My favorite song on this new album, I love The 1975 so much.
Although the beat is upbeat the lyrics really hit home for me. I remember two different times being on vacation with my husband who was also hooked and being sick as hell in this nice city and hotel and having to search the streets for a fix because we ran out two days before we were supposed to come back. When I first got clean i couldn't imagine having to live the rest of my life without my high. To me it wasn't living if I didn't have it i couldn't function without it. I'm currently a little over 2 years clean now from IV opana and heroin.
God damn I miss opanas 😭😭
how good each song is a function of how good the last song released was. its like they figured out how to mathematically to make each song more catchy than the last.
Despite the sad lyrics this is a fantastic song. Such an 80s vibe that is this tune, truly beautiful!

It's kind of funny to me how many people here are over the age of 40 who love this band, myself included (63). When I first heard of this band roughly 4 years ago, I was an immediate fan and I thoroughly enjoy the sonic, aural soundscapes which The 1975 continues to create. When I first heard the band I asked my then 18-year-old daughter if she was familiar with them and she just scoffed at me and said, "yes, every 12-year-old girl has Matt's picture on their bedroom wall". I felt like an old teenybopper...ha.

For sure about heroin addiction. It must have taken a lot to write this.
It's not living if it's not with you is a pretty straightforward metaphor, but if you still don't think it's about heroin addiction, collapse my veins is also sung in the chorus. You either would know what that means or you wouldn't and it's a good thing if you don't.
