Cool talk! As a point of feedback when talking about/mentioning a character or movie if you put up an image on the screen of the character you mentioned benefits I think, I haven't seen a lot of illumination movies so sometimes I don't know who or what you're referring too. Also once during a camp type deal I was forced to watch the lorax in theaters and now knowing it was an illumination movie it explains why I disliked it so much back then haha
Let's not forget that they're the ones animating the Mario movie that's coming next year I'll break it down again: -Illumination's writing never not suck ass -They sometimes rely on a sub-plot or two to drag on to 90 mins, even if it A) is boring B) goes nowhere C) adds nothing to the main plot, and finally D) all the above -Their usual character also isn't great and doesn't vary much (if at all) -Their jokes normally come from "Random XD", Pop-culture references (lesser-known or otherwise), and everyone's favorite Butt and/or Fart jokes (tho granted, they're far from the only ones with that last one, but it's what they always have) -Most importantly, they prioritize getting as much "target demographics" as possible (which results in money), even if at the cost of their movies -and the cherry on top (for Mario movie specifically), Mario is not as adaptable as other gaming franchises, without taking creative liberties or thinking outside the box DreamWorks and Sony Animation may be flawed and hit-or-miss, but they always have the potential to put out a decent to great movie every once in a while, even Blue Sky who were in similar to Illumination in a number of ways (mascot from flagship franchise they milk dry, at least one Dr. Suess animated adaptation, at least one other adaptation of existing media, and a overall forgettable library) put out more effort than Illumination does So yeah, it sounds like the Mario Movie will be less like Sonic 1 (let alone Sonic 2) and more like The Angry Birds Movie (more specifically the first one). But then again since Nintendo is thinking of hopping in the movie industry (without Illumination, they're hiring a different but somewhat familiar animation for the job) with the Mario esstenitally being a cashgrab to fill in the budgets, i can't say it's not a genius financial move.
Moral of the story: the Minions is an inside job

Illumination made one semi-decent movie (Despicable Me) and have been putting out shit movies ever since.
