    Its a pity all that mud can't be removed and sieved through. Imagine what's buried beneath it all.

    • @rogerdickinson920
      @rogerdickinson920 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      My guess is the mud is contaminated beyond belief, lots of heavy metals. It would be nice to get it down to the bottom and hose down what's left then move onto the next section.
      I've seen vids by someone else and the canals he tromps through in Birmingham are littered with debris. It is a disgrace so I stopped watching them even though I'm originally from there.

    • @DavidLee-yu7yz

      I was wondering whether the Canals and river trust would be dredging/digging out the mud as it is drained, it would be a shame not too.

    • @whitecompany18
      @whitecompany18 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      It will be dredged it's just easier to do with the water in because the machines are on boats and the silt is floated away on butties.

    Amazing story about the "Leggers" Can you imagine the labor of this? That little heart pot is a sweet find. I cannot imagine how stiff and sore everyone was after a day of floundering in the deep mud.

    • @johncartwright8154
      @johncartwright8154 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you go to the 'Black Country Museum' near Birmingham, you can have a go at legging through a canal tunnel there!
      I can confirm it is hard graft. I was knackered after a few yards from being in such an unnatural position.

    Hey, Si. If you want information on that helmet, it's a early WWII Brodie, probably 1938 pattern. Later ones got rid of the leather for a webbing. A very unique find, especially when 85% of the helmets were left on Dunkirk. Only a small portion of those helmets really exist in modern times. From the look, as well, it may have been modified with a new-ish chin strap. Nevertheless, very good find.

    Just found this channel, loved those amazing finds!
    This has probably already been mentioned but I'm pretty sure the funny thing on the handle of that sword is a wire grip. This would have been tightly twisted around a leather wrapped wooden handle to give the wielder a better grip on the sword.
    I'm no expert but I think the sword itself could be a Victorian era police or constabulary short sword also known as a hanger. To my knowledge they were used by British police, prison wardens and sometimes Customs Agents.
    Again I'm not an expert so someone please correct me if I'm wrong!

    Always fun with Cuffs along, although I was afraid you had lost him forever in the early minutes.
    Anna, Flo and Monica always bring a great positive energy to the hunt ... I had to laugh when Anna talked about chucking something back in - are we sure she understood the Canal & River Trust's goals for the day? 🤣
    Nic says no to the voodoo doll - doesn't need a new 'Chucky' coming home with her.
    And Simon, what can I say? Now that there are Covid vaccines galore developed, maybe those scientific teams can turn their energies to finding a vaccine for the common pun 🤔 would you be willing to be a test subject?? 🤣🤣

    I was lucky enough to experience being a "legger" in the 70s during a canal boat trip in a tunnel at the Black Country Museum. They turned off the engine and got the whole class of under 10s children to lie on boards and push along the barge with our feet along the tunnel walls. Historically this was done and the horses would meet the barge at the other end after being walked above ground. Health & Safety would have a fit these days but I'm luckily to have been a child of the 70s where we allowed to experience 'real' history. Going down a mine on one particular trip was also cool.

    I worked in the sand fill crew underground, when you started sinking in the mud you never tried to pull the stuck foot straight out, all that would happen was that the other foot would be pushed into the mire. The secret was to jiggle the bogged foot rapidly up and down, this acts to liquify the mud and the foot is easily unbogged without bogging the other leg.
