I remember this episode really nailed down the atmosphere of a family pool party. Drinking, hard partying, awkward interactions with relatives and friends of relatives, the stresses of cooking that much food, and assigning people tasks like driving the Grandparents home.

A lot of people think that this is the most boring episode of The Sopranos.. I would have to disagree with that.. I love when they focus on the family aspect.. I always liked this episode because it showed how Carm's mom is also really toxic and narcissistic the same way Livia was (but obviously not at the borderline insane level of toxicity Livia was). It kinda makes you think about how when Tony and Carm started dating they probably bonded over talking about having to deal with their crazy mothers.

The name of the episode might stem from the fact that for all of the accomplishments of the actual Marco Polo, being a renowned Venetian explorer/merchant whose books allowed Europeans a view of what life in the Orient was like and inspired other travelers such as Christopher Columbus...in today's culture he's just known for a silly pool game. It's the same cultured vs. rudimentary contrast between Hugh's snobbish friend and the more affable Tony. You know there would be a scene where Hugh's friend tries to explain who Marco Polo was while everyone is just having fun with the pool game.

I love this episode. It was a "family" episode and was very realistic and funny. My parents have an in ground pool and they had some big pool parties while I was a kid growing up and this definitely nailed the atmosphere perfectly. A lot of people usually ended up getting a bit too drunk at those events that started when it was still daylight and ended with night swimming.
This is why the Sopranos was so great. Their family lives mirrored a lot of people's so people could relate. It didn't just concentrate all on the mob stuff.
Daily mob life is more of a grind than people think anyway. It isn't just doing hits all of the time. A lot of mob guys ran legit or semi legit businesses and bookmaking and loan sharking could be sort of a grind as well as union meetings.
Day to day mob life could be tedious and not very glamorous just like an average person who works.

No. It's really a big difference between northern and southern Italians. You can see the same in Britain where they make fun of Welshmen or Northeners and in Japan it's the same with the northern Island which didn't really had people on it until they got perennial crops from trade with Europeans. I guess these stereotypes exist in most countries, where the more developed parts usually have the big newspapers and TV stations, so they tend to make fun of the rural areas. It's certainly what's going on in the US and even between Jersey and New York. You can decide for yourself if there's any truth to these stereotypes, but it's more than just "not being in the mob".

Now I guess that could mean he's not on Little Carmine's side, but a made guy (like Rusty) saying someone is "a friend of ours" always means their made. Great episode, IIRC the song playing when Tony B kills Joey and Heather the prostitute (Bad 'N' Ruin by Faces) is also playing the background of the club when Tony B meets with Tony to ask to get back in the game. Really great layering right there. Also another great example of dispelling the Mafia myth: we are supposed to have sympathy for Tony B and all his "hardships" but his solution involves killing a young woman cause she happened to be in the car, real class act that Tony B is. Anyway that whole sequence is shot with perfection.

    2 theories I have.
    1. I always thought Russ was implying tony obtained the gun illegally as they never export certain parts.
    2. Why did tony not give tony B some cash to get back on his feet when he got out? Seems customary when wiseguys get out of jail to give them a boost yet he didn’t get anything.

Interesting take on the beretta shot gun scene. I took it to mean, since Italy doesn't send the best to the states implied that Tony got it illegally through different channels, which is probably true either way.
Good call. And the russ/ Paulie father sounds very applicable.

I think I need to correct the idea of the gun. Wait, I went and watched You Tube clips of Dr. Fegoli and the Berretta rifle. And OMG. In just the few minutes I watched I learned so much. Firstly, I must correct the impression that Dr. Fegoli saying the Berretta bad of bad quality. Dr. Feolgi insulted Tony by inferring that the gun was smuggled into the United States by illegal means. Basically, he called Tony a criminal in front of his father-in-law and his friends. So, Dr. Fegoli was either saying the rifle was illegal or a counterfeit. Either way, he was demeaning Tony by saying the gun was a fake or from smuggled. Just like when someone is smoking a Cuban Cigar. It's the best, but contraband.
And OMG. Is Paulie Dr. Fegoli's son. OMG. YES OF COURSE. No detail is in the script is by accident. So, this theory is totally correct. During the episode, they mention that "Russ" was in the army and got crabs. Prostate cancer is also introduce, which can be caused by Syphilis or other STDs. When describing Dr. Fegoli we are directed toward is genitals by way of references to crabs and prostrate cancer. We are instructed to think that the man thinks with his penis. Despite the armies directive to stay from the prostitutes in Italy during the war, he obviously had risky sex. Maybe "Russ" Fegoli had sex with a prostitute who got pregnant and went to a convent to get help. The prostitute may have given up Paulie for adoption and dedicated herself to God. Maybe Paulie's real mother was a teenager and got pregnant by a horny American soldier and had to give up the baby for adoption. I knew an Italian lady who told me about being a teenager during the war. She said they were starving and had to eat song birds. I can only imagine her desperation.
OMG Paulie's real father is Dr. Fegoli!
