-On Crete, Theseus (a divine hero and the founder of Athens from Greek mythology) seduced Minos' daughter, Ariadne, who conspired to help him kill the Minotaur and escape by giving him a ball of yarn to unroll as he moved throughout the labyrinth.Theseus managed to flee Crete with Ariadne, but then abandoned her on the island of Naxos during the voyage back to Athens.

In Waterhouse’ painting the beautiful Adonis is awakened with a kiss from Venus in her Elysian pleasure-garden.The garden is fecund with roses (symbols of Venus) and anemone flowers that were said to grow from the blood of the dying Adonis. The mythological legend of Adonis, as represented in the painting, is symbolic of the renewal of life, vigour, and desire at the arrival of spring.

The ship of Theseus is a paradox regarding identity over time. One version, positing a scenario in which all the parts of a ship are replaced gradually and one at a time, poses this question: Is the vessel that exists after the replacements the same ship as the vessel that existed before the replacements?
