I have a separate fear for water in video games. Of course, the limiting factors of your abilities while in water is a factor...but mostly things like in games, for example, jak and daxter, there's things very willing to kill you the moment you touch it.
      I don't think I'll play subnautica, thanks.

The first things to ever scare me in a game when i was a kid were the moblins in Ocarina of Time, when i walked out into the corridors and i heard their battle cry as they charged towards me i immediately threw the controller on the ground and made my dad get through it for me.

I was too young to really do anything in the game so my mother did most of the progress, I just spent my time in the towns. In order to visit the forest or the zoras as an adult I had to make it past the moblins everytime. I had the TV remote right next to me so I could quickly turn off the TV incase I failed a jump.

Everything about this game gave me a bad feeling in my stomach. When I played this level I was too scared to even go into the water. Other things in the game that scared me include:
    Boos
    Chain chomps
The noise that bowser makes if you don’t have the key for the next area
Everything about the haunted mansion world
    Eels
    Those weird spider things
    The poisonous gas
    Quicksand
    Mario death noise
    The slide
    Power up timers
    Piranha plants

My first scare has to be those skeleton things (sorry, forgot the name) that appear at night in Ocarina of Time. I was just exploring the world, when all of a sudden the city gates closed and it became night time. I was like "Okay, this is fine, it's just dark!" Then all of a sudden, these skeleton things appear one by one and start to kill me. I was like "OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD, GET IT AWAY, GET IT AWAY, AAAHHHH"

I remember that I always used to get scared of caves in Minecraft, even when in creative mode. Until you placed a torch, you never knew what might be in front of you! And the sounds... hearing a zombie but not knowing where it is not a good situation - you keep looking over your shoulder to see if it's coming. These days I'm quick to light caves up and defeating monsters isn't a huge problem, but I'm never reluctant to return to the surface. Underground areas are still not, and likely won't ever be, my comfort zone. :P

The first I can remember is actually Luigi's Mansion. I was pretty young and I had never played a GameCube before. I think this was during a Halloween family get-together, and my cousin had brought it over, as well as a few games. While everyone was busy socializing downstairs, being the youngest by a large margin and not having really anyone to talk to, I was able to sneak upstairs to the room where the GameCube was in. I ran in and didn't even bother turning on the lights, I just powered it up and grabbed the controller. The wind outside was intense, and I think it may have even been raining pretty hard. I had no idea that a "scary" game was inside, I just wanted to play the GameCube for the first time! Then, as the plot unfolded and I learned it was about ghosts, both the mansion and my house creaking in the wind, I felt scared. I pushed on, got to the first real fight, and when the paintings started to shake and talk to me, I was terrified. When the first ghost jumped out at me, I shrieked and shut off the GameCube, running back downstairs and not telling anyone what I had just done, thinking I'd be in trouble.

For me, it had to be Luigi's Mansion. I know it's silly, but that game had a legitimately creepy atmosphere! My older brother had to take over in a lot of parts, and then I would nab the controller at the last second to take credit... ah, good times.
Dark Moon was good too, but it was much more comical overall, with a lot of slapstick humor and such. Again, it wasn't bad, but it just wasn't the same.

This was the first for me too, with ghosts appearing out of nowhere when I was 6/7 years old. The only game aside from Luigi's Mansion that ever scared me was Undertale due to a certain boss and the build-up to it (if you've played it, you know exactly what I'm talking about). But even horror games have basically no effect on me. Maybe it's because I'm expecting it?

To be fair readers, if it is your first 3D game (considering there was no other games like it before this) then it pokes out and tries to eat you in one shot! Oh god that was terrifying. • @warioland523

Clanker probably would be more terrifying if he was actually bad and I do think he was supposed to be but he betrayed Grunty because she stuck him to a chain so he could no longer have fresh air. Not to mention the job of grinding garbage is probably one of the worst jobs one could have. No wonder his teeth started to rot. The scariest thing in Banjo Kazooie 1 that is an actual enemy is Snacker. This somewhat rare enemy basically shows up in certain bodies of water and actively chases after Banjo hoping to get a bite out of his hide. He has the habit of warping in out of nowhere to begin his pursuit and his song is a scare cord similar to something you would hear off of Jaws. Not to mention Snackers have Lakitu syndrome meaning only one attacks you at a time but if you take one of them out the breather is only temporary and another one will come in and take the place of his fallen comrade. One thing that Rare was known for in the past was challenge and Banjo Kazooie was no exception. You would think for the water based world that is Treasure Trove Cove you would have nothing to worry about going for a swim only for a shark to start chasing you the instant you set foot in the water. Also Banjo Tooie has the Stomponadon the namesake of the appropriately named Stomping Plains. The Stomponadon is supposedly a large T-Rex that is so big all you can see of him is his large foot stepping down on you. One hit from him will reduce your energy to one and it doesn't help that you have to split up and take each character through the plains. Banjo at least can recover with his Nap Pack move but Kazooie has nothing to rely on but her quick feet meaning precise timing is needed to get through. Heck he even gets an intro similar to a boss and he is not even a boss. He's just a very large enemy.

What about that one freaky boss from Super Mario Sunshine that you fight underwater and it shoots this purple slime out of it's eyes that drain your oxygen and if you get close it swallows you. What's creepy about it is it has 4 eyes with 2 male eyes and 2 female eyes. That means this thing is both genders. 0_0

I have two answers for this.
    1. My fist video game was Toy Story 2 for the PS1, and when I first encountered the Green Slime boss, it gave me dread when I had to re-fight it due to me sucking at gaming.
    2. Final Fantasy VII, Emerald Weapon. While TS2 was mainly dread, this was true fear. I knew that EW existed in the waters, and I hated going under. This was amplified when I had a close encounter with the beast. I got in the sub near Junon, and I submerged... at least two feet away was Emerald when the screen faded in. A second later and I would've have died if I hadn't gone back up in time.

The ghosts in Sandopolis Zone Act 2 from Sonic & Knuckles. They start off small, cute, and harmless, but get progressively bigger, menacing and even murderous the darker it gets. That combined with scary shift in tone in the music when compared to Act 1, and the stress inducing light mechanics... I was terrified of that stage.

I know this vid is a year old and almost 2 but I'm gonna' tell u the first thing that scared me that I remembered!
I was replaying a level that my dad beaten in Super Mario Galaxy with my first baby-sitter I remember I had.... I didn't watch my dad beating the level so I didn't know what to expect from it.... But when I was on Bowser's air ship and I had to beat a boss on their I thought I had to beat Bowser and when I was younger I was terrified of loud sounds and noises so I thought Bowser was gonna' come and yell at me.
Yes that's what I was afraid of.
So I ran into my room saying "Bowser's gonna' yell!" But then my baby-sitter said that Bowser doesn't do that anymore so then I finished the boss.
And the boss was Kamella not Bowser but I thought it was gonna' be Bowser.

I'd have to say what scared me the most was a boss from Pikmin 2 and it was the Water Wraith. I remember him coming out of nowhere in the cave and being able to do nothing to fight it off or even slow it down (you do beat him at the end but that's after 4 previous floors of horror). In the end he caused me to reset the game multiple times.

this video reminds me of the days when I was young and unaware of such things as enemy AI and pre set behavioral patterns. as an adult games aren't really able to scare me because I'm all cynical and smart. at least smart enough to find the patterns and such. I will say though the n64 was the birthplace of game fear. seeing Mario literally drown to death or watching banjo fall from great heights, flailing as he screams. or even more simply falling into lava and just... dying. plus my first M rated game, Nightmare Creatures! it helped me feel less uneasy about graphic content when your character is more than capable of fighting back.
oh, and mortal Kombat mythologies sub zero. I got squished by the falling ceiling and that just stuck with me.

No joke, Yoshi's Story was an incredibly hard game for me because I loved the baby Yoshis so much I'd reset any time one of them was carried away to the dungeons crying. Like, these weren't multiple lives you had, EACH ONE was a separate baby Yoshi, and if you kept playing beyond a death, you'd be reminded of the ones you left behind every time you went to the character select screen. So yeah. I never could use the checkpoints like other people did because I was too sentimental about losing to go on if I lost one Yoshi.
I was really confused when I learned the main complaint of that game was that it was "too easy." To me, it was grueling.

The haunted piano music didn't help either. I'm now immune to haunted house levels.

Mine is kinda embarrassing. I only remember now because of the Halloween event in Club Penguin Rewritten.
Mind you, I was only 4 back then, and only recently discovered CP (a few months or so). I turned on my old windows xp and went onto the Internet, ready for another fun time in Club Penguin (I wasn't even a member). I saw the new Halloween update and was psyched at what new mini-games or costume that I wouldn't be able to buy were in store and I immediately entered a server. I went around in shops, gazing at the cool pumpkins everywhere, looked at the new costumes.
Then I went into the Coffee Shop.
On the screen "Night of the living Sled" was being shown. Seeing the sled come to life horrified me. The fact that the sled kept chasing the 2 poor penguins, the look of terror on their faces as they see the object slowly hopping towards them, and how it didn't display any emotion as it went after them, left me awake 2 hours longer when I went to bed. That night, I was terrified as I thought the chair plopped up next to me would suddenly leap at me. That's the first time I felt truly scared in a video game.

The first truly terrifying gaming moment for me was the wallmasters in Ocarina of Time's Forest Temple. That whole dungeon was unsettling, but stepping out of a twisted hallway into a room of moving shadows was too much. Even Navi warned me not to go in there. It took me years to brave that temple.
And then the Shadow Temple did it all over again.

The Forest Temple was one of the freakiest places in any Zelda game. And I love that they did it to the forest dungeon, of all things, when they could have just made it a regular old woodsy place. But nope, they creeped it up like crazy. That music!

    • @K1rkhammer
      @K1rkhammer 7 ปีที่แล้ว

My problem with Ocarina of time (among other things) is that pretty much EVERY dungeon, with a few exceptions like the fire temple, had a weird creepy vibe to them. And not intimidating creepy either, aside from the forest dungeon (my favorite), but like...unsettling creepy, something crawling down your spine type of creepy, and after playing later games in the series, I don't feel like EVERY dungeon in a zelda game being lonely and unsettling makes any damn sense. The atmospheres of individual dungeons kind of started to blend together for me, so the creep factor started to run kind of thin.
Except the shadow temple. The hell were they on...

I'm younger than most people I've seen in this comments section, so my first console was the Wii.
When I was nine or ten years old, I got my first Zelda game - Skyward Sword. It was fun and immersive. When I swung the Wii remote, Link swung his sword! I felt like I WAS Link. Which is why I was scared of dying in the game. Usually it wouldn't be that big of a deal, say if a Bokoblin or something managed to kill me, I'd just take a deep breath and get payback. I played through the game with no major roadblocks, just a green guy running around saving the world. Then came the second visit to Faron Woods, and the first Silent Realm. Oh boy. When I first got there, it was nice and peaceful, the music was calm, I wasn't too worried about anything, other than the fact that I didn't have my sword. I walked out of my protective circle. Then immediately ran back in, terrified, and didn't try to leave it again for another hour. If you've never played Skyward Sword, let me explain why I was so terrified. Silent realms start blue, peaceful, almost relaxing. But, as soon as you step out of your protective circle, everything turns red. Loud, unsettling music starts blasting through the speakers, and a bunch of giant, invincible, nightmare-fuel monsters start chasing you. And you die in one hit. I think it took me three hours to finally beat that first silent realm.
That's the first time a game scared me.

I just got the game as a gift from one of my dad's co workers. I was excited, thrilled even. we played as a family the first time, but then we made our own profiles. Then I progressed in the game very fastly and kicked boss butt. Then I made it to King Fin bone... I splashed into the planet eagerly awaiting the boss I knew was coming. The thing is I knew there was going to be a boss cause of the one star. I didn't know the horror that was coming. Then, I saw a bony body swimming towards me, with beams of light for eyes and a large gaping mouth. I quickly turned the level off and went back to the base. I ignored the level, replaying honey hive over and over. Then I realised to progress I had to beat Fin Bone. So I did. I kept telling my self: "It's just a game... A stupid obstacle in a game..." I had to look away every five seconds in the second attempt. I lost, and looked at the horrible thing staring at my dead, Mario body. The third time I beat him, though. But it got more horrible the more it progressed. The horrible cracked body of jumbled up bones looking at me with it's flashlight eyes... Then, on it's last life, I realised it was not that scary... It was just a mess of code and animation ment to stop me from beating the game...
And that's the story of the first game that scared me.

I don't remember the first game to truly unsettle me, but all I know is that I have never felt more helpless than when the first few bars of Big Boo's Haunt began to ring in my ears. This actually wasn't even too long ago, but something about Big Boo's Haunt gives me the heebie-jeebies. It's one of those things where you never know what is going to happen to you next... I hate uncertainty of that kind.

I remember the first game that REALLY scared me as a kid was... Luigi's Mansion. I remember watching my brother play it and I was truly terrified of the entire game. The ghosts, the ghosts when they appeared out of nowhere, the baby boss fight and even the final boss battle with Bowser scared the pants off me. I was so scared by it, by mum banned my brother from playing it and it wasn't until 4 years later he could play it again.

I loved the finding Nemo game when I was a young fellow. So, if you've seen the movie at least, you know the part where Marlin and Dory were in a trench with the anglerfish, and there are two levels in said trench. a level where you play as Dory swimming though the area trying to keep up with Marlin as he searches for the mask that was dropped, and one where you play as marlin, being chased by the anglerfish. in the former, if you go to far up, the angler lunges from the darkness and try's to kill you. THAT THING WAS KINDA TERAFYING OKAY?
LOOK AT IT. WHAT KIND OF KID WOULDN'T SHIT THEMSELVES?!

(you can beat the level by going in circles though)
not to mention the MUSIC in the searching level.

Banjo Kazooie really scared me as a kid. The stage was Clankers Cavern. Not the nicest looking place, but I didn't care. I'm swimming underwater through a cave of all these tentacles wiping around, trying not to get hi, then I get to the end, expecting to be able to swim up and replenish my health. Unfortunately, the first thing I see are the jaws of a giant menacing looking metalic shark named Clanker. I didn't know anything about that level and I just panicked. I was like, oh shit. That thing is going to murder me. I turn around and start swimming through that cave, but it's dangerous and there is no way I won't drown. I panicked, paused the game and turned it off xD One day when I gained the courage to take on that stage again... I find out Clanker is completely harmless and just needs your help xD And I just got a shiver up my spine. Those guys at Rare new what they where doing when they made that beast and get you face to face with it after running so low on oxygen. Now, that wasn't the only thing. The normal sharks scared me too. Just not as badly as Clanker though.

I've now made a couple other Mario RPG boss levels, but now I'm wondering which one I should make next.
I'm thinking of maybe doing the Shadow Siren Battle from PMTTYD, but I want to give love to all the Mario RPG's, and Mario & Luigi Dream Team had several awesome battles.
What battles would you like to see? I'm even working on a earthbound RPG boss, and an entire fanmade Paper Mario series.

Dream Team was a great game. And maybe Giygas for Earthbound.

I nope'd out of the Drip Drop Galaxy, as well as Bonefin Galaxy as soon as Kingfin appeared. But my very first such experience was actually several years before while playing Lego Island 2, in a diving minigame where the goal is to collect Lego pieces to build a bridge. It was all fine and dandy at first, just swimming around and taking my time, until I got to the deeper area and got a warning that half my air was gone. Hadn't even noticed the meter off to the side. Being easily intimidated and not wanting to drown, I exited out of that minigame pretty much right then.

    - The giant eel (Not going back ever again)
    - The Boo ghost in the basements narrow hallway (Creepy as fuck)
    - The big fish with the sunglasses and it's fat mouth trying to eat me (I hated water at that point)
    *The Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon:*
    - The Giant Ocean near the snow village (At that point, I hated swimming underwater)
*Glover:*...the whole atmosphere in the game was just...bad to me
    - The pink balloon elephant (Especially when it chases you...scares the hell outta me)

The first game that ever scared me as far as I can remember was Rugrats: Search For Reptar, on the PS1.
It seems innocuous at first, and it mostly is, much like Mario 64- but I was terrified of several things in that game.
The robot thing in the pyramid on the golf stage, the 'evil toys' level, the closed toy store level, the level where Spike is lost, the GOOSE, even that... lobster boss? From the supermarket level. But what scared me the most were two things- the shadow ghosts that would go *BOOGABOOGABOOGA* in that one stage, whose name escapes me, and the floating television screen robots from the alien spaceship level.
In retrospect, it was kinda silly, as these things usually are. I think if I ever saw a Chryssalid at that age I'd have a freakout, considering what one mention of "Newfoundland" can do to me even today(though that's mostly the memory of a thrillingly difficult mission and enjoying battling such powerful, freaky opponents).
Other things I remember are the River Twygz from Super Paper Mario, Mimi's transformation as Elsin mentions in this very comment section, and the Old Chateau Pokemon Platinum(although in that case even as a kid I was just enjoyably unnerved and LOVING the spooky atmosphere).
I do also recall playing an Aliens vs. Predators game as a youngun... which is quite self-explanatory, really.
The interrogation droids in Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast also scared me, even though they were rather unthreatening, I think the fact that they were used for torture and were so eerily quiet was enough.
Then, Jedi Knight 3: Jedi Academy had the sandworm level... Actually, a lot of JK could scare me at times. It's a pretty atmospheric series, and I remember the Artus Mines in 2 being spooky, especially the dark section with the little ankle-biting rock crab things.

I'm right there with you Arlo, SM64 was one of the first scary games for me! Though, for me it was Hazy, Maze Cave that scared the shit out of me as a young kid. Another one that was objectively not scary but I remember creeping me out some how is the Wriggler battle inside the mountain of Tiny Huge Island. Kids' minds are freaking weird...
Paper Mario's 3rd chapter was also another spooky one; I remember it taking forever for me to beat, partly due to my childish incompetence and partly due to just bring scared of the Boos/Forest/Tubba Blubba. Personally, something about 90s music and graphics creates a real emotional connection with me. I guess cuz that's what I grew up with.
Edit: I was also sorta young come TTYD, so that Chapter 4 was also of a certain spoopiness.

Same for me SM64 was surprisingly scary sometimes. I think it's what gave me my fear of water. Jolly Rogers bay and the eel were scary, but what really scared me was the sea monster thing underground that you have to climb on, I always thought it was going to eat me.

It's far from my first gaming scare, but why does nobody talk about the eel from Noki Bay in Super Mario Sunshine? It's like they tried to turn the scariness of 64's eel up to 11!
The fact that swimming underwater worked differently and had you rely on your FLUDD jets while constantly falling... AND the Shine REQUIRED you to fall right down close into the darn thing's massive, gaping mouth!!
That eel is ultimately friendly, and you're just there to clean its teeth, but still... geez!
