Ford GT40 | The Imposter

  • In the second instalment of our BOM Classics series we captured the story of Ege Ferguson, owner and restorer of a Ford GT40 replica. Having desired a GT40 since its launch in the mid-1960s, it wasn’t until 1990 that a freak fire created an opportunity for Ege to realise his dream. Here he tells the story of his fascination with the legendary car and his ten year restoration project.
With thanks to Ege, James, Mark & Michael Ferguson and the GT40 Enthusiasts Club

It may not be a “real” ‘40, but that’s clearly not the point. It’s a labour of love, passion, skill, and time that clearly gives great joy, not some trailer queen destined to do less than 5 miles a year lest it’s investment potential be negated. Bravo.

the point he made about every owner of a GT40 replica finding a different way to solve a problem and then everybody copying a better idea they see on another car makes me think that the replicas are better cars than the originals and they will keep getting better.
who cares if it's "real", that's a rediculous question.

This guy is absolutely head over heals in love with his car and i think the contrast between the two is amazing, Because he's very modest and soft spoken whereas the car itself is very loud and obnoxious when driven hard but the noise that it makes is still music. Its almost like this car embodies the louder half of Ege's quiet personality.

What a beautiful piece of art. I like the owner's attitude: It's a real one, in terms of it exists. Looking at Binky, we all agree that it's the same Mini, although so much of it was replaced during the build. It's not only the material that makes things real, it's the spirit in the things.

Love a bit of Binky, Escargo etc but you can understand how labour intensive it is and how hard it is to generate 45 minutes of content. Vs this, it's a very welcome addition! Friends wax lyrical about windscreen motor differences, and how to work out what works and what doesn't, but it never grabbed me. My interest has always been solving the problems associated with winning races, given what my arse is sitting in.

He is a wonderful, proud and immensely skilled man whose meticulously precise craftsmanship is visible throughout the car.
This was a fascinating look into how this beautiful car came to be this way, with countless hours and investments over the decade.
There are some things which cannot be rushed and need to take their time to meld into what they've become, and this is one of those!

Watched this, and smiled at various points. Nodded, sagely at various other points, empathetic to the personal commentary. "Shall I buy it.... my Wife wasn't pleased - oh, how we can relate. 10yrs! A genuine, labour of love - and vision, to build something that fits your dream, tweaking, improving, engineering. Is it real? As real as what brought us the original. Fantastic! Absolutely fantastic. Inspirational. There's hope for us all. Thank you.

Ege, you should always remain proud of your work. A beautiful car, built to be exactly what you wanted it to be for yourself with the plan to be driven and enjoyed... that is the way all projects should be handled. Thanks for sharing your story and passion and also thanks to the BOM blokes for bringing this to us.

Jeez, what a gorgeous car. The GT40 was about the only time Ford actually built something properly. The determination to beat Ferrari drove Ford to a place they haven't returned to since. Thank you guys so much for sharing Mr. Ferguson's story.

Ummm, F150, and the Mustang, and don’t forget the Crown Vic. But definitely forget about the Mustang II.

@@andrewhigdon8346 I stand by what I said. None of your examples were built to any decent standard beyond the dollar. How many of those turds are still on the road is inconsequential. GT 40 was built to win a specific race, not be sold to anyone and everyone.

The last part with the standing in the garage and pausing to looking at its beauty put something wet in my eye. Lovely car, man, and soul to this video! Hope that the new generations of enthusiasts keep some of this serene outlook on cars.

Seeing this depresses me a little bit. I was born too late - and made the wrong choices - to be have a chance of owning and driving something like that before it becomes too late for me to own a proper, old fashioned V8 sports car. A car built with precisely one purpose in mind - to be fast, and damn the noise and expense, it's gotta be fast!
I don't regret it; I'm enjoying my life now, car or no car. And maybe I'll learn to love electric, or maybe petrol will outlive me, in the same way that film photography (my current main money sink) outlived the expectations of most.
It's a true testament to the team at BOM that they can do several build vlogs in arguably the most entertaining fashion on TH-cam, and deliver some absolutely top-tier content like this. Thank you all, and I suspect when I lose and break my BOM mugs and hats and masks that the only replacement will be available on the BOM store ;)
