This is the first time they played this live. I read that it isn’t one of James’ favorite songs because of the stuff he was going through when he wrote it. Also singing wise, as you could tell by how he was struggling to hit the high notes and at some points he went an octave lower with the growl. This is a challenging song for a singer at any age let alone being 58 and trying to belt it out.
It's James's favorite song, he said it several times himself. named as favorite songs Fixxxer, Bleeding Me and outlaw torn in an interview in the year 99 in 2009 in another interview he reaffirmed those songs. The only thing is that he doesn't like to play it live because it brings him vocal problems. Perhaps if he had played her in '99 he would have done an excellent job since her voice was fine in those years.
I don't see why they don't just play it a half step down from album tuning. That would make it D standard, which they would already have on tour anyway for Sad But True. I mean every other song they play that's in standard tuning on a record they play in Eb, so no harm in doing it here!
This is a moment to behold. I haven't been a fan for too long, but this is my fav from Reload. I was really hoping they would play this one eventually.
I guess you’re lucky they played it at a point in time where they record all their concerts so they can post them online for everyone to watch. You wouldn’t know if they did it in the 90’s because most concerts weren’t recorded.

One of the things I've always hated is the sentiment that you can't call yourself a true Metallica fan unless you claim to hate everything after 1991. Which really just proves what fair-weather fans those people truly are. Sadly, the band catered to a lot of that fan pressure by not playing many Load & Reload songs over the past 25 years, but history is finally showcasing Load & Reload as the excellent albums they've always been. Blood for face, sweat for dirt
Three X's for the stone
To break this curse a ritual due

Numb us up to shield the pins
Renew our faith which way we can
