    Now I can say I'm officially ready for Atelier Sophie 2.
    The Mysterious Trilogy was a joy to play through, and a good starting point for anyone interested in the Series.

      I played the oriinal SOPHIE game it ENCOURAGED you to take your time, on several occasions....then 50-ish hours into the (Spoiler) said I took too long to save (spoiler)!? And finished the game for me! I have played every game before this. I tried restoring 10 hours back....same result with me hurrying....then 20 hours...then 28ish hours....same results! Frustration x 10......needless to say I have not played the series since. My question is have you heard if they took this d1ck move out of the game(s)?

      Atelier firis is the most enjoyable atelier game, I've played so far. It has also one of the worst crafting mechanics of all atelier games.
      The great points:
      It's pretty rare we can enjoy a game that feels like an actual adventure. No big bad demon lord killing, saving the world, high stakes saga, just a nice coming of age story.
      The world in Atelier firis is huge. Probably at least twice as large as in Ryza. Because of the size of the map, the first journey to Reisenberg feels like a significant milestone in firis life. Going back to an atelier in town, like in any other atelier game, would delete progress and frustrate but it was fixed by not using any real hub at all. And the mobile atelier is soooo comfortable to use. Running around and collecting materials but the backpack is full before you've completed the map? Just set up the mobile atelier. Need an item before a boss? Mobile atelier. Running out of LP? Mobile atelier.
      The coming of age story of firis and the other characters, especially her sister Lia felt very wholesome. And there are also a lot of story quests. It takes around 1-2 hours to get through all events of one character, and there are almost 30 in the game.
      Not only do I disagree with your notion "a time limit has no place in an open game" (Fallout 1 had one too), I think the time limit made the game better. First it changes the players priority and introduces a bit of urgency. Firis shouldn't complete every single map because she isnt a real alchemist yet, just help the people she are able to at the moment and move on. The jorney to Reisenberg is the goal not being a samaritan. Also without the time limit it would be very easy to beat Sophie on your first run. But firis is sophies apprentice. She isn't supposed to beat her teacher in alchemy.
      The exam feels like a real exam. I went in blind and was actually suprised about the theoretical multiple choice test. I also panicked because of the time limit during synthesis exam and almost failed it (so its actally similar to my real chemisty synthesis exam heh).
      the bad points:
      Crafting in this game is pure suffering, so i can understand why other people dislike this game. In fact I would even rate crafting without the NEW GAME+ or the Ritual Cleric DLC costume bonus downright unplayable. How are we supposed to max out any recipe at all?
      Grinding for endgame traits is something only a masochist could enjoy. I dont know how anyone of the devs thought, killing the same boss for 20 hours straight could be fun. The drop rate is ridiculously low.
      The 3500 item limit is rough. With such a large game, the storage was full before the exam started. There are also a lot more item characteristics that are desireable, so filtering "bad" materials is challenging. Items with endgame traits have low component count, items with high component count low size etc. Just give us at least the regular 5000 item limit ffs.
      Also, Why aren't there any campfire spots in dungeons. The game was designed around them.
      TL:DR Atelier firis is better than its reputation as long as you dont focus on crafting.

    The male symbol is also the symbol for Mars, and the female symbol is also the symbol for Venus, so the astrological bent of the whole thing remains pretty consistent.
    They're the same as the symbols used in actual, real-world astronomy. It all ties back to Roman mythology.

      I'm surprised he didn't mention firis then. Because even me, a non colorblind person, had problems figuring out the elemental components on the materials. Using green, blue and violet only for colored numbers was a bad idea.

  • @Exor2
    @Exor2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    My biggest gripe with the newer Atelier games is the lack of challenge in term of time restraints.
    You can grind for mats with good traits without any worry.
    This then lessens the significance of good synthesis play.
    I understand some people hate time restraints.
    But a single option at the start of the game could fix that instead of completely removing it.
    Want a challenge?
    Turn it on.
    Want a comfy playthrough?
    Turn it off.

    Wow, that was a heck of a review of the trilogy! Really appreciated the thorough discussion for each key part of the games. It's great to see how the games evolve and ultimately end on the best game of the three. I have yet to play the trilogy myself, but I do plan to soon since I'd like to play Sophie 2 near release. That limited edition on the NISA site is tempting but I will likely hold off. I completely understand the temptation of figure preordering lol. But my priorities for figures are on the anime side for the most part.

    The symbol for male is derived from the symbol for Mars, and the symbol for female is derived from the symbol for Venus. That's where we get the boomer saying, "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus". Furthermore, this is the real-world Alchemy Notation for the Planets that I'm seeing in the footage!

    Good to know that you also enjoy mysterious trilogy, since it's my personal favorites. I actually start out this trilogy from Lydie & Suelle (my favourites of all 3), cause it's the only mysterious title that available on switch at that time and completing the saga backward (from Sophie then Firis on DX version). In regard on Firis, I do have similar opinion, while it have its charm, playing through Firis feels like a chore and there's no Cornelia Duplication Shop in it (my biggest gripe for this game). Lastly, if you like Lydie & Suelle alchemy system, you're going to like Lulua's too, it's just absolute perfection, in my opinion.

    Nice review! I'm working through the Mysterious Trilogy for the first time also and at the end game for Lydie and Suelle.
    I definitely agree with your thoughts on all three games.
    Sophie was a great starting point and nice intro.
    Firis was definitely the low point with the excessively large maps. The lack of Duplication really made the end game drag on for me.
    Lydie and Suelle is a nice way to round out the trilogy and fix points. I definitely fail in this game the most at telling the colors apart. Red and Green, and Blue and Purple are constantly mixed up for me that I constantly rely on the item filters to tell them apart and using the nodes to tell which is which. I managed better in the previous entries with tricks to tell different colors apart.
    Lydie and Suelle is definitely my favorite with all the improvements though. I'm definitely looking forward to Sophie 2 and experiencing it after working through this trilogy.

    I really like the time limit of Firis it brought back planning ahead even your exploration times and your questing times sometimes they even overlapped.
    Perhaps a option to play without a timelimite or to play with would be good but I really missed time limits in the other "recent" Trilogies.

      Well - It's not entirely true. There is a story around Plachta and another set of characters. I won't tell more because of spoilers, but yeah - There is at least something. What I like about the trilogy, is that characters from the first game can be seen back in the later games (You will see Sophie back in Firis and Lydie & Suelle, and characters from Firis make a appearance in Lydie & Suelle too).

    • @TheKisekiNut
      @TheKisekiNut  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For me it pretty much had no plot outside of giving you the background on Plachta, it's more a disjointed series of events than anything else. Even though it's not out yet, I'd be confident in saying that skipping the first game isn't going to affect your time in the sequel as I can't really see how they can link the two together outside of some references here and there.

    • @AkumaItachi
      @AkumaItachi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheKisekiNut Yeah, i suspected as much, i mean Ryza 2 is a direct sequel and apart from characters, there isn't anything else you wouldn't understand by not playing the first one.
      Looking forward to Sophie 2 tho, Gust is increasing the quality of the Atelier games with each new entry

    • @TheKisekiNut
      @TheKisekiNut  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating that you should skip the first game as it's still a brilliant title in it's own right, and it probably will allow you to enjoy Sophie 2 even more.
      But I use Trails as the benchmark for deciding if a game is 'important' for you in terms of narrative continuity, and from what I played of Sophie there wasn't much there that made me think 'yep, that's an important plot point that I think can be expanded'.
      At the end of the day, it's possible that Gust never even planned to release a second Sophie game back in 2015, so they preferred to leave all knots tied. The only real narrative point that could be expanded upon again relates to Plachta, but since this game is falling in the period before Firis, they can't really expand upon it based on what's already occured in Firis and L&S.

    Mysterious trilogy and sophie 2 is indeed have the most engaging mini game crafting imo, but they're really kinda frustrating somtimes in end game crafting lol.
    I love arland trilogy simplicity the most though. Ryza is the most braindead, definitely, but what i like about ryza 3 is the core ingredient morph let you customize your equipment more and let you change some effect that you dont like or you deem unnecessary, not total control but still nice.
    Ryza 1 have similar system but only with the weapon, where you can choose any weapon effect within that weapon tree and still let you craft the best weapon.

    I have seen a variety of colorblind options in other games. It appears a somewhat solved problem. The only reason they wouldn't be included is resource application at the dev or publisher level. ie, they don’t want to pay somebody to make their game accessible.

  • @jclosed2516
    @jclosed2516 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    While I was no stranger to JRPG's, the ones I played never really "cached" me like the Falcom (Trails, Ys, Tokyo Xanadu eX+) games. Maybe the latest Tales game will change that, but the previous ones did not really did that. It was when I played the Falcom Tails game I really got hooked. And then there was that gap between Trails of Cold Steel II and Cold Steel III. It had to be filled with "something", and it was at that time that the Gust collection of games filled that gap in a perfect way.
    The Atelier games are really enjoyable and (mostly) lighthearted. Just the perfect medicine for my JRPG withdrawal symptoms. I also started with the Mysterious trilogy, and really enjoyed them. I fully agree with the critiques, and also agree that Lydie & Suelle is the best of the trilogy. I also started with the Mysterious trilogy because I really do not like time limits in games (Firis has such a generous time limit that it did not bothered me at all). Especially the Arland series have the reputation of very brutal time limits. Strange enough the latest one, Atelier Lulua, has no time limit at all and looks and feels very similar in gameplay to Lydie & Suelle.
    Al in all Gust is really becoming one of my favorite game developers. I not only had and have a nice time with all the Atelier games, but I really loved the two Blue Reflection games. Of course I am looking forward to Atelier Sophie 2, and maybe there will be a last Ryza game in the future (I still feel her journey is not completed yet). Who knows? Anyway - I think we are blessed with so many nice JRPG's these days.

With time limit mechanic, the start you feel this is fine the travel to area shortener, but when you open new area farther from your home it becomes really fast game, time to gather area>gather material+fighting>back to atelier can be 2/3 months time and for trophy/achievement hunter is really hard to complete it. Personally I've only played one Atelier game, Firis, after finally deciding to take the shot when the Mysterious -trilogy went to sale on switch E-Shop. Decided to go with Firis since I was keen on having my first Atelier to be a (quote on quote) "true Atelier experience" that has the time limit in it.
    I now know Firis's time limit ain't exactly the most demanding one out of these out there, but for a first timer (despite having over 60d left once I reached the city with all recommendation letters needed) I was constantly at the point of "will I make it?" ...especially after the "boat -arc" ...Seriously, I hate that when I think of the game that's the FIRST thing I remember but it was just such a ... ugh..
    My point is that if this is how the time limit is handled on each game (as in; it's making me afraid to move on a overwolrd) the I guess Sophie would have been the ideal game that I could just pick after the day and have fun, instead where in Firis I picked it, but I also had to pay some attention in fear of missing out my days (again, as I've since learned; for no reason really)
    That said after the exam (once the game ditches the time limit) the game became a lot more fun to me overall, I can now explore freely without any urgency and have more fun with the addicting alchemy system without wasting any days and so on and so on.
    Other thing I have mixed feelings 'bout Iris was the overall feeling difficulty and thus a certain... uh... "spikes" if it can be said that.
    namely, for a majority of the game (again, pre-exam) I didn't really face anything that killed me. At all. Thus I preferred making just making bombs and stuff like that as I didn't really have need for healing that Liane (and later Firis herself) couldn't produce.
    synthesizing
    And for that reason alone I just can't hate the game at all. Can't say I LOVE it per-se, but I'm glad I took the shot and I DID enjoy it a lot.
    Overall the game was what I was expecting though, a cute anime firls doing cute/funny stuff.
    But sometimes it's all ya really need.

    The journal progression scheme in Liddy and sue was awesome. I actually tried to 100% each journal chapter before turning it in. I didn't always succeed, but that soft goal made the game enjoyable. I also liked the character interactions in Liddy and Sue. About the only thing I didn't like was the bingo card alchemy system. And here's the rub. I saw a playthrough for ferris and and loved 99% of it. But the alchemy system was even less forgiving than Liddy and sue. Ferris post game potential seemed phenomenal and just 9ver all seemed it would scratch my grinding itch I get for RPGs from time to time but I just hate that alchemy system. NOW THEY GONNA DO SOPHIE 2 INSTEAD OF RYZA 3??!!
    Well, tldr later, bottom line is I did liddie and sue just cuz I needed an atelier game at the time and it had the least PITA alchemy system of the mysterious series, but I'm totally annoyed they bringing it back.

    @Wurbel199 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You have EXACTLY the same opinion as me. Sophie was great, Firis was mostly meh and Lydie & Suelle was fu*king awesome again.
    The reason i didn't like Firis was, that the Open World wasn't that appealing. Gust is just a too small Studio to pull that off. Maybe in the Future it will work out, because I DO think that the Open World concept would fit in this Series. Second reason: I teally didn't care much for Firis, i felt she was mostly a bit annoying. I appreciate however, that her Stiry fits the concept of the Game perfectly. Third and last reason: There was no real Story. I get it, the Journey IS the Story. But that wasn't enough for me. Maybe when i Replay it one day, the Game will appeal to me more. Time will tell. I however liked the Idea, that Sophie became Firis' Teacher.
    Lydie & Suelle on the other hand, was the PERFECT Ending for the Mysterious Games. Every lose Story threads from various Characters since Sophie got a decent Ending, like Fritz' Family, Cornerias Parents and most importantly, Plachtas Story and her journey to become Human again. Honestly, i shed some tears when that happened. Even Luard, the final Boss of Sophie, got alot of development and depth. I really didn't expect that. Sophie became one of the best Alchemists in the World, she even surpassed Plachta. And the Twins are just loveable with a decent Story on their own. The Game took all the things i liked about Sophie and improved them significantly. Like you said, the Alchemy in Firis for comparison was a complete mess. It is totally worth it to get the true end, because it is just beautiful and a very very satisfying conclusion to the Mysterious Games.
    We don't need to talk about the Soundtrack, because all three Games are very unique and memorable in this Regard, though, Lydie got the most Tracks that i loved.
    I still haven't finished Sophie 2, because i want to enjoy it as much and long as i can. It was such a huge surprise that she got her own Sequel after all this time, so i wouldn't be surprised if we get another Mysterious Game in the Future. That said, i would LOVE it if we get more. :)

    The last atelier game I played had a time limit. I think...Ryza? I had decided I was gonna get the platinum trophy for this game as I still have my copies of Atelier Iris 2 and 3 and I looooove those games. However, when I recieved the bad ending because of running out of time I realized games with time limits on an entire playthrough are not for me. I actually haven't played an Atelier game since because I was so disappointed. But maybe I'll give it a second chance if Kiseki Nut vouches for it.

      The Arland trilogy (Rorona, Totori, Meruru) have that kind of time limits (especially Totori is brutal). The Dusk series started with a time limit at the first game (Ayesha) but became a whole lot less strict in the next game (Escha & Logy), to completely vanish in the last game (Shallie). The only game in the Mysterious trilogy (Firis) has a initial time limit, but it's so generous that it really takes a lot of effort to NOT finish within that time limit. Atelier Ryza and Ryza 2 have no time limit at all.

      Yeah, all of Arland had time limits, Dusk has 2 (one of them quite lenient from what I've read), and Mysterious has the one in Firis which is also lenient. I personally don't like time limits in games either, only Majoras Mask did it well in my eyes, and it's why I've got the Dusk Trilogy on my backlog over Arland later this year.

      If it's storytelling your looking for, then Atelier isn't really for you. They're very simple stories for the most part (at least from the ones I've played) and in some cases virtually non-existent (in the case of Sophie) - Atelier grabbed me because of how unique it was to everything else in the JRPG sphere. Light-hearted, colourful, excellent music and an addicting crafting system. It was the perfect alternative JRPG when I wasn't looking for something heavy hitting.

      Personally, I started with Ryza and it hooked me into being a fan. The game takes a bit to get going, so you have to give it a few hours at least, but it's worth it. Ryza 2 is even better than the first. Sophie is good, and definitely worth playing. But if I had to choose, Ryza wins in my opinion. Playing Ryza first actually helped with the whole item synthesis thing. At least the concept of it.

      I feel like atelier’s main attribute is it’s cosyness. They are very very relaxing (even with all the combat) and a beautiful escape from reality. You also kind of grow to love the characters and their interactions. I’m definitely a storyline lover (in terms of game play preference) and I adore the atelier series. 💕. But yeah probably Ryza is more accessible to you than Sophie 1. Sophie is one of the lesser of the whole of the atelier games (and there’s like 20+ of them) but I’m sure number two will have a lot of quality
      Of life changes.

      I'd say it's worth it personally. 30 Euros for each game that can easily take 50 hours each. But of course that's all in the eye of the beholder, 90 Euros is a fair chunk to spend. So if you're not fully decided on whether you want to give it a go in the near future, I'd just wait and see if Koei has a future sale.

      Outside of Ryza which honestly was quite light on the fan service anyway, I never considered it too heavy, the Mysterious Trilogy had none that I recall. And I hear that it extends to pretty much all the other games, Ryza was pretty much the only one to skim the line.
      But in terms of why I like them, they're just unique in how carefree they are. When so many games are all about the heavy themes and 'saving the world', it's nice to have a break from that once in a while. Atelier pretty much fits that bill.

    Not to be an arse, but the issue with your color blindness vs the game's synthesis system is not really an issue for the game. True, most games nowadays do account for those that struggle with it, but in their defense they are not obligated to. Also it's usually just a hassle to think of alternatives. Time that usually is best spent elsewhere.
